This story is better than I expected. The realistic characters guide us through an unrealistic plot, making it seem very real to the reader. The emotions they experience ring true, and so do the lessons they learn. This book is really about love, devotion, and dealing with a handicap. Love does conquer all!

This is an unusual novel with a truly odd premise. At its heart, it’s about belonging, loyalty and trust. The protagonist grew up without any of those blessings, and the children she comes to love represent the rage of that longing very clearly. I think a book this good deserves better cover art.

A nugget of a story with thinly drawn characters

Interesting premise - a pair of twins who burst into flames now and again when they are upset. Implausible? Sure, but that’s beside the point. He never explains why the kids catch fire and you don’t expect him to – all kids catch on fire now and again in a sense. It’s one of them metaphor things.
Other than the fire thing, the kids are pretty regular given the difficult circumstances in which they were brought up. The fire problem clears up easily – the kids just needed some TLC. Who knew?
Other than flaming children the rest of the book is about two female characters it’s hard to care much about, and a stereotype politician husband. Oh, and Carl, the bodyguard. It ends just as you expect.
But I did read it to the end, and it was well written. A classic three-star effort.

Crazy entertaining book. The concept of this book is so out there and I don’t know what possessed me to listen to it. Lillian is contacted by her old high school roommate with a job opportunity. Lillian and Maddison were best friends, from different family backgrounds. Lillian raised by a single mother and did not have money. Maddison was raised in a wealthy family and was expected to get a prestigious education, so she could marry well. Maddison, now a senator’s wife, contacts Lillian to help her with her twin step children that are coming to live with them full time. Needless to say the step children have unique abilities, they spontaneously burst into flames if they become agitated. This is where the crazy concept comes in. I immediately imagined Drew Barrymore in Stephen King’s “Firestarter.” This book was hilarious, wild, outrageous, and sad all at the same time. I think Michelle Ireland is now my favorite narrator. If you want something a little different to shake up your reading style, then this book is it.
