I love this story. It reminds me of my grandfather who I taught to read at 70 years old. I became an educator so I could help others. This story inspired me to continue spreading the message that there is NOT an achievement gap for black and brown children ... there is an OPPORTUNITY GAP. I pray that stories like this continue to motivate children to learn and that people in education continue to consider the lasting impact slavery and racism has had on the education of black and brown children. Well done. Bravo.

I didn’t know about Mary Walker until I found this book. She is known as the nation’s oldest student who learned to read at the age of 116...yes, 116! This beautifully illustrated book follows her lifelong journey to become a reader. It is sure to not only impress your students but inspire them to follow their dreams...no matter how long it takes!

Breathtaking book on all levels, and so inspiring! Indeed, nobody is ever too old to learn. What a fabulous message for children. I had never heard of Mary Walker, but I am glad I know her story now, and that children will too.

This book was perfect to read as a mystery reader for my granddaughter's fourth grade classroom. I was able to video me reading the book and reveal who I was at the end of the video. The story is one every child should read. It is a true story full of history and life lessons our children need to know. The illustrations are as good as the story. I highly recommend the book.

A stunning and triumphant story! This book is beautiful! My children (ages 4, 8, and 11) were captivated by this story from beginning to end. Mary Walker’s life opened up thoughtful discussions about history, slavery, education, overcoming challenges, and celebration. 5 stars!

I bought this book for my granddaughter as a Valentine's present. The story of a grandmother learning to read was perfect for a 1st grader who was just learning to read herself. The book tells the story of a slave who was not allowed to read and how she persevered until she taught herself. What a story of accomplish-

This book arrived in excellent, brand new condition. I have read it to my first graders (they're learning how to read) and they are so inspired by Mrs. Mary Walker's story. When they struggle with a concept in their reading, I remind them to think about Mary Walker and let her story help us keep going and not give up. I purchased this book with the intent of reading it to my students, although I have a few that could read parts of the book with some help.
