Leila knows that in the world of supernaturals she is unique. And she knows that her ability to see the future by touching objects makes her one tasty morsel for unscrupulous monsters, so says her four-foot tall circus friend, Marty, a vampire. But what Leila never anticipated was being kidnapped by a band of fanged fellows who insist she track down a certain someone using her abilities.
By touching a series of objects, Leila is able to track their owner; where he has been and where he's going ... The man being hunted by her kidnappers is in fact one frightening and fiery vampire, who's as handsome as he is ferocious. But what Leila didn't anticipate was that when she's in this handsome vampire's mind, he can sense her, even talk to her. Yet another thing to add to the freak file.
Luckily for Leila, Vlad Tepes is willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and believe the kidnap story. He's even willing to swoop in and save her - at a price. Until Vlad can figure out who is hunting him down, the curiously charged Leila will be staying with him, under guard, in his Romanian castle.
'Once Burned' is the first book in new 'Night Huntress' spin-off series, 'Night Prince' by Jeaniene Frost.
It has been hard reviewing the last few `Night Huntress' books. Hard, because I still count them among my favourite urban fantasies, and still some of the best in the genre - but I can't deny that from about book five to now, the series hasn't been at its very best. And I feel like I've been saying the same thing in all my reviews of recent books; "the romantic tension is gone, and the series is lacking because of it." I still recommend the books to timid first-time paranormal readers, but lately I've been putting a caveat on my recommendation, along the lines of "look out for `This Side of the Grave'. . . ". So I was actually really excited for a spin-off of Frost's staling series ... especially when our spin-off hero is none other than Vlad Tepes.
Vlad has been a fan-favourite since he made his first appearance in 'One Foot in the Grave'. It's not just that he's the vampire that all other vampire mythologies are based on (with a bit of help from Bram Stoker). No, it's that from the moment he stepped into the series, Jeaniene Frost managed to make Vlad decidedly her own. His one-upmanship with Bones elicited many chuckles, while his instant friendship and kinship with Cat showed his softer side. And when he revealed the demons of his past to comfort Cat in her time of grieving, during 'At Grave's End', I think fans were instantly hooked on him. He's not like Bones's sire, Mencheres, who is steadily mysterious and guarded. Nor is Vlad like the larrikin Ian, spouting out double entendres to rile those around him. A few of Frost's other secondary characters (even six books into the series) seem to still be caricatures whose little page-time hasn't fleshed them out nearly enough. But Vlad is unique - perhaps the most complex of all Frost's secondary characters. I think his three-dimensionality is what warranted him at least two books in the 'Night Prince' series (as opposed to the one-off novels that Mecheres and Spade got with the 'Night Huntress World' books). And now having read 'Once Burned', I can understand more than ever why Vlad is the one 'Night Huntress' character to carry an entirely new series...
'Once Burned' is not told from Vlad's perspective (mores the pity) even though it is his spin-off. Our narrator is Leila, a scarred and electrified young woman who has the power to see past and future events with the touch of her right hand. She and Vlad cross paths when she is kidnapped with the intention of helping a band of vampires find Vlad, so they can kill him. Instead of doing this, Leila contacts Vlad who swoops in and saves her - but intends to keep her close so he can use her unique abilities to find out who wants his head on a pike. From there the plot becomes deliciously tangled - as Leila succumbs to Vlad's fiery charms, and the heady knowledge that he is the one person in the world she can't injure with her volts of electricity - because Vlad controls fire, and simply absorbs Leila's jolts and bolts.
I loved Leila and Vlad as a couple, especially because Frost has fun with introducing Leila to a vampire named Vlad. But the real reason I liked Vlad and Leila, was that they actually had a lot in common. A running 'theme' of 'Once Burned' is in the line "everyone holds their sins close to their skin" - referencing the fact that Leila can know people's deep, dark secrets by mere touch of hand, and also the veiled understanding that Vlad has a lot to hide. It's a very interestig pairing, especially when Leila has to refrain from knowing more about Vlad than he's willing to impart... but especially because Vlad and Leila both have guilty consciences from events of their past. The death of Leila's mother, and the death of Vlad's wife.
Vlad and Leila also uphold fan's recent belief that a little sexual tension is a good thing. I won't give anything away, but Frost certainly hasn't made Leila and Vlad's pairing an easy one... not like the pretty instantaneous coupling of Cat and Bones (which has arguably back-fired in recent installments).
Frost has used the real Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) as a groundwork for her 'Night Prince' Vlad. Sometimes her reliance on Tepes's history works - like when she takes his infamous 'Impaler' nickname and makes it a gruesome punishment. But she also had a tendency to info-dump everything she knew about Vlad into whole scenes ... which included detailed descriptions of his exile, war with the Ottomans etc, and these had a tendency to read like a Wikipedia entry.
Something else I really liked about 'Once Burned' was the new crop of secondary characters introduced - like Leila's four-foot vampire friend, Marty, and Vlad's right-hand-man. Not to mention the human blood-donors and vampire warriors who populate Vlad's Romanian castle. I even liked the villain; a chilligly-named Szilagyi who was pitch-perfect in his deviltry.
I will say that I wish the 'Night Prince' books were told from Vlad's point-of-view. I know a few other reviewers mentioned this, but I think it bares repeating. I know Frost likes to write from the female POV (Cat in 'Night Huntress', Denise and Kira in 'Night Huntress World'), but I really think that Vlad was already a solid enough character to bear the brunt of narrative. Now, this sounds like a big complain, but it's not - because I did like Leila and enjoyed reading about Vlad and the vampiric world from her perspective. I'm just saying, when Vlad is the star of the series, he probably could have been the literal, narrating star of the series. Know what I mean?
All in all, I would say that 'Once Burned' is an impressive come-back for Jeaniene Frost. If you're like me, and have been grappling with the last few so-so 'Night Huntress' books, then 'Once Burned' and the new 'Night Prince' spin-off series will be your antidote. Frost is back to writing about delicious romantic tension, complex villains and epic battles. I can't wait for the second Vlad book, coming March 2013, and I'm even newly excited for the next 'Night Huntress' instalment... heck, reading about Vlad even has me crossing my fingers that Ian (that secondary-character larrikin) hurries up and gets his own spin-off book too!
In Burned, Leila is a woman with a gift (or curse, depending on how you look at it) that resulted from an accident she had years ago. Scarred and damaged from touching a power line, she has the ability to channel electricity through her hand and read a person's past, present, or future by touching them. For her, this has meant a lonely life trying to make a living doing a traveling circus act with her dwarf vampire friend Marty. That is, until the day she's grabbed up by 4 angry vampires who want to use her powers to find Vlad Tepesh, the vampire the legends are based upon. But when she channels into Vlad's present, his mind-reading abilities make him able to speak to her mind when she's tapped into him. Using her last hope, Leila asks for Vlad's help to escape, but she gets much more than she bargained for. Turns out Vlad has a special ability of his own that makes him immune to Leila's touch, which proves very enticing given Vlad is a muscle-clad sexy beast of a man. Vlad rescues Leila and whisks her away in the hopes he can use her gifts to find out who wants him dead; but as they spend more time together on this mission, it's clear that there's more than just a business relationship going on. Leila knows she can't resist the aching pull she feels towards him, but that means possibly risking her life and definitely her heart.
I can't say enough how much I just loved this book, because it had two things I loved combined into one awesome story. The fantasy aspect was handled perfectly, with just enough thrilling, chilling vampire plot to make your skin crawl and your mouth water. It was such an exciting sequence of events throughout the whole book, with characters that I really enjoyed. And the steaminess factor, I have to say, was HOT! There were fiery sparks shooting off between these two from the start, and Vlad just had me melting right along with her. It was a slow burn that ignited just long enough to get your heart pounding out of your chest, then it got right back into more twists and scary turns of events that easily grabbed my attention. I didn't want to put the book down because there were no points where I wasn't drawn into either the characters, the plot, or the fireworks between Vlad and Leila!
I really liked Leila, she started off as a woman who was comfortable with where she was at in life but didn't expect much for herself because of it. She knew her abilities and her scars made her a freak, but she embraced her life of loneliness and was just content having Marty caring about her like his own daughter. But her snarky personality and quick whit made her fun from the very start, and the way she grows into this diabolical, powerful woman in the story was just awesome. I loved hearing her quirky thoughts, she was absolutely hysterical!! And I loved Vlad's reactions to her mind rambling even more, it was a perfect addition of lighthearted banter amongst all the drama and pulse-racing chemistry between them!
And Vlad, oh this sexy thing, he won me over in a heartbeat! And I'm not usually one to like men with flowing long hair, but I didn't care with this guy because he was just hotter than words (literally). One of my favorite lines sums up Vlad's sexiness perfectly:
"Beautiful and diabolical. You make me impatient indeed to claim you."
* sigh * There's just something so utterly sexy about a gorgeous, strong vampire telling you he's going to stake his claim!! He was cocky and so sure of himself, but not in a way that made him vulgar or had him coming across as a neanderthal like some other romance novels I've come across. He was intelligent, clever, funny, and even had moments where he was just downright sweet to Leila in his own alpha-male way. I just adored him, and he was so perfect for Leila's self-esteem in the way he made her feel sexy and wanted.
Like I said, there was never really a dull moment in this story, and a lot of that was the creepy and gut-wrenching lifestyle of the vamps. Vlad was the ultimate vampire, not taking anyone's bull and commanding obedience from his men (thankfully, this behavior didn't extend to his relationship with Leila, making me love him even more!). When his enemies were after them, Vlad and the other boys left no doubts about their intentions. I loved that Leila wasn't just always the damsel in distress, though, it made her so much more exciting and interesting that she could handle herself instead of always relying on Vlad and the boys to save her. Some of the scenes were just sickening to my stomach, but come on, they're vampires...
I was so into this story that when I realized it was already up to the epilogue and things were not at all resolved with Vlad and Leila, I was floored. I knew this was a series, but with most romance series the sequel goes on to a story about one of the other characters. I wasn't expecting this one to cover more of Leila and Vlad's story, so now I'm a combination of excited and mad that I have to wait until next year to have more!! I wasn't expecting to get so attached to a fantasy romance, but these great characters just roped me in for the long haul! Definitely plan to read this one again to hold myself over until next March, because I just loved it!! Highly recommend to readers who love both fantasy and romance, Burned has it all!!

This book holds a place in my heart as one of my all-time fave vampire reads.
I adored the idea that here we are dealing with the Vlad of legend, the most famous vampire Bram Stokes inspiration for Dracula himself.
His Pyrokinesis abilities, the old style way he spoke and the at times arrogant way he conducted himself around others.
I just found him so endearing and irresistible, the ultimate bad-boy and for me, he was just the whole package.
I also adored Leila her feisty take no prisoners attitude combined with her extraordinary abilities and personal self-reliance she was more than a match for Vlad in that regard.
This had it all suspense, intrigue and romance aplenty.
Also had some really great secondary characters.
This was all wrapped up in a HFN and we will get to catch back up with Vlad and Leila again in the next instalment where their story continues.
This was such a fabulous page-turner and I am off now to re-read the second book in this series.

Vlad is the most feared vampire for his ability to control fire. He lives up to his bad ass reputation and messing with him results in getting fried or in impalement!
Leila works in a travelling circus. Staying in one place is not really an option as her unusual ability, acquired through an accident raises questions. This ability prevents her from having a normal life and her only friend is Marty, a vampire!
Leila's ability is made public through one of her "good samaritan" action. Consequently, she is kidnapped by those who see her as a tool to be used for their gains. Unknowingly, she connects with Vlad whilst using this gift. The reaction that she gets is not one that she would have expected but turns to her advantage. She is now caught in this environment, completely foreign to her. Despite his reputation, Vlad isn't all that he is made to be and takes a shine to Leila. She, on the other hand can be herself around him. Something that she has craved for years. Here starts a hot and passionate affair but danger lurks around every corner. Vlad's enemy sees an opportunity to get to him and goes for it! Leila learns more about her own abilities and the enemy is in for a surprise!
This fast and furious novel kept me on my toes. Vlad is a fabulous main character as is Leila. The pace, the plot and the character development are addictive. It's a real page turner which ends in a bit of a disaster. One that has left me wanting to know how this impacts on the next instalment. Loved it!

From the start, her chemistry with Vlad sizzles. He is too demanding, and she punishes him for this (not enough for my taste) but it's clear they work together sexually all too well. Meanwhile, Vlad and his men work hard to keep Leila and her abilities safe. They fight against his old enemies as Leila gets to know him better. Romantic and real danger is always sizzling.
Slide under the sheets with this one and you're sure to get a great revenge story with your kisses.

Once Burned is narrated by new character Leila, a human woman with some very interesting abilities. When she was a teen Leila suffered a severe electric shock after touching a power line and ever since then her body has held onto an electrical charge that shocks anyone who she touches. Along with conducting electricity Leila also developed the power to touch an object and get a glimpse into the lives of people connected to it. Leila is aware that vampires exist, in fact her only friend is a vampire who is able to survive the effects of Leila's electric shocks without permanent damage but she has done her best to stay off the radar of anything supernatural. Unfortunately for her she hasn't succeeded and she is kidnapped by a group of vampires who want to use her ability to track down Vlad and ambush him. Leila is left with only 2 choices, she either helps the vampires who she knows are planning to kill her or she warns Vlad of their plans and hopes that he will help her.
Vlad is sexy, arrogant and scary as hell - he didn't inspire the legend of Dracula for no reason after all! His fierce reputation has been earned and he doesn't flinch away from dealing out harsh punishments when they are needed. As much as he is prepared to be brutal to his enemies he does it because he cares about the people who are under his protection. He wants his enemies to know that he will stop at nothing to keep his people safe and if anyone crosses him or those he considers his then they won't live long but they'll still suffer enough to make them regret it. Vlad has spent hundreds of years ruling with an iron fist but he obviously has the respect of the people in his line and they know that as long as they don't betray him he will give them anything they need. Although he is incredibly pushy and arrogant he does have a softer side that Leila is only just starting to uncover and I want to see more of that side to him.
Leila's abilities make it very difficult for her to be around people so she has become quite a loner but because Vlad is immune to her power she finally has the option of being close to someone. The chemistry between them is fantastic but I really liked the fact that they are both wary of building a relationship and are taking things slowly. Things are definitely moving in the right direction for them but I'm glad their story hasn't been crammed into one book and that we're going to spend more time with the pair. Vlad and Leila don't quite manage to beat Bones and Cat to become my favourite couple in the series but they are definitely a fun pair to spend time with and I'm looking forward to seeing more of them.
As with the rest of Jeaniene Frost's books Once Burned is a great read full of action, romance, hot sex, humour and great side characters. It was nice to see a brief appearance from Cat & Bones but I'm glad that their presence didn't overwhelm the story and take away from the main couple. This is Vlad and Leila's book and too much of the other characters would have spoilt that. There is a bit of a cliffhanger ending to this one so I'm glad I waited until the release of Twice Tempted before reading it and I can't wait to get started on the next book.
