5.0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Masterpiece
By ArkMan on March 7, 2018
I have read my 58 year old (1960) edition of this book to our grandchildren practically every night they are with us. Our special needs grandchild, who can't read sentences yet, quotes it to me exactly word-for-word, while I turn the pages - several times each night! This year my 1Fish 2Fish finally started completely falling apart - then we found this one. It is exactly EXACTLY like the original. And maybe in 58 more years will be read by my grandchildren's grandchildren!

Some works of literature are timeless.

This is one of them!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful sounding silliness and fun
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 21, 2019
On Monday, on the BBC TV quiz ‘Only Connect’ there was a question where you had to guess the 4th in the sequence:

[picture of Michael Fish] [Michel Fish, Michael Fish] ? ?

Once my husband had identified Michael Fish (ex-TV metereologist), I knew the answer was “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish”, without having the faintest idea why. It just sounded right. The answer was then given, stating that it was a Dr.Seuss book.
Then on Tuesday, at the pub quiz, we had to decipher three book titles:
1 F, 2 F, R F, B F (also S 5, and A T o 2 C)
There was that book again! I could not recall having read it, and my husband had never heard of it, so there was only one thing left to do. On Wednesday, I ordered a copy. It arrived on Friday, and now on Saturday I have read it and am writing my review.
I love it!
The illustrations are superbly fabulous, and the rhyming text anarchically silly. This is not a book to teach children about reality (it does have ‘lessons’ on counting and colours) – it is a book about the way words sound, and all the fun you can have with rhyming. Incidentally, it will help children learn to read, as they see how similar sounding words look similar too. But, for me, the pleasure of reading it, was in the way it sounded and looked.

“If you like to go Bump! Bump!
just jump on the hump of the Wump of Gump”

“if you wish to wish a wish,
you may swish for fish
with my Ish wish dish”

This is a great book for any child – whether they are reading for reading yet or not. It is also fun for middle-aged non-parents!
I will be passing this lovely book on to two of our pub quiz team mates who have a one-year-old child. It is never too early to start kids on books.
