Both Cat and Bones acted fine during their separation, so I ended up not having too many issues with that. I will say I still think 4 years is way too long and I wish the first book could have ended another way, but given the direction it's going in now with the government agency, among other things, I guess I understand why the separation was necessary. Still hate it though! So now, down to this book and my rating ...
WHAT I LOVED
* Bones.
* Bones.
* Bones.
* Hmmm, did I mention the hero, Bones?
* So, yes, Bones. ::sigh of longing:: Bones. Well, Bones is definitely one of the greatest heroes ever (even if he has one of the worst hero names ever) and just writing this sentence is making me grin like a fool! He's sweet, possessive, courageous, intelligent, funny, sexy, romantic, tender, passionate, rough, loyal, cute, and on and on and on. The man doesn't have any faults. Which in another romance—maybe a non-paranormal one—might bug me, but he's too amazingly to-die-for for me to object to anything Bones-related.
* This is Bones-related, so I apologize for my obsession, but god can you say "sexy" and "sizzling chemistry"?! In the first book, the love scenes between Bones and Cat were hot and Frost continues that tradition here. While the tension between them seemed more pervasive and constant throughout book 1, some of the scenes here make up for any lack in between ... and anyone who has read this book knows exactly which one in particular I'm referring to. ::blush::
* Great secondary characters. There were more than in the first one and they're a wonderful addition. I love the team and Don, and it was great to see Rodney again. Cat's mother is still an evil ::clears throat:: witch—but she didn't completely screw up anyone's life this time around or appear very frequently, so I wasn't as bothered.
* The world Frost has created is well-depicted and it's interesting finding out the different vampire society rules as we go. Seeing the differences in the PNR worlds the authors create is something I find really interesting. Right now my biggest comparison is to Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires.
WHAT I DISLIKED
* Tied to what I disliked about the first book, but I didn't like that this one starts four years later and that it takes 80+ pages for Bones to even appear. I mean, vampires are great and all, yay for government agencies that deal with the supernatural, and woohoo for Cat (though my cheer purposefully lacks enthusiasm; see next bullet), but HELLO! The main reason I'm reading the series is because of the amazingness that is Bones, so to keep him off-page for so long—nuh uh. ::finger wagging:: Not cool.
* I've read in various reviews throughout the series that some people find Cat annoying, and in the first book I didn't find that to be the case at all. I really liked her in book 1 and I think the main difference for me between that one and this one was that before we were shown very clearly both her strength and her vulnerability; here, I didn't see any of the latter. In a lot of the scenes, Cat comes off as a self-entitled know-it-all. She always thinks she's in the right or has the right method or the right answer and while in her relationship with Bones we're given glimpses of her vulnerability, overall I did not get enough of that from her. I'm not saying I want her weak and malleable—I don't like that type of heroine unless there is a really well-done and believable transformation that happens in the story—but I want her to be a little more human. HA—no pun intended. She always appears so sure of herself here and it made it hard for me to connect with her. She got on my nerves and honestly, I'm starting to feel like she doesn't deserve Bones! (::another sigh of longing::)
* This is probably an extension of my Cat annoyance, and had I liked her more this might not have bothered me at all, but god can the woman be more wanted / desired / sought after?! First—or continuing—is Bones, whose fabulousness we won't revisit. Then there's Noah, her beta "vet pet," who is just a time-filler but wants her. There are also others, but I'll leave out any spoilers. And then let's not forget ****** (another spoiler). Like really? I don't know, not sure that's enough admirers. Hopefully we can move it to 5 or 6 in the next one.
* I was also a little annoyed with the mystery / action / whatever secondary plot of this book. It's compelling, it drives the book forward, and it definitely fits into the story arc, but it's not like there's a separate vampire-related mystery or incident that they're trying to figure out. It's always related back to Cat and one would think there was more going on in the vampire world than just what this one half-breed vampire does.
BOTTOM LINE
This book is such a part of the series that I don't think it should be read as a stand-alone, and by itself it's nothing to get excited about. However, I definitely do recommend the first book, Halfway to the Grave , and if you read the first book, you're going to have to read this one, and since you're now completely and undeniably addicted to and obsessed with Bones, you're going to have to go on to the third ... so basically read it, learn the Cat-Bones updates, and then move on to the next book in the series.
Cat has grown up a bit in the 4 years that have elapsed since the end of the previous book. She's not quite as naive and impetuous as she was before, and she has largely learned from past mistakes, though not quite as much as she should have perhaps. She has made great improvements in thinking things through before acting, and in trying to consider all possible alternatives before deciding on a course of action as being "the only way," but she still hasn't fully taken the lessons to heart. For all that she's quite used to working as part of a team, and generally insists on full disclosure of relevant facts with her team, she still lets a blind need for vengeance direct her actions in a way that comes very close to backfiring on her because she purposefully kept her teammates, and Bones in particular, in the dark regarding all of her intentions during a crucial meeting. At least she's gained enough wisdom to recognize when she's screwed up and how and is able to correct her mistake before things go too far.
Bones has changed little from the first book, though the intervening years have made him just a slight bit more ruthless perhaps. He makes it clear to Cat from the first time they meet again here that he has no intention of letting her get away from him again. He's definitely bitter about the way she left him before, and about the 4 years he's had to spend without her, but he also seems to be somewhat understanding of why she did what she did. Ready to forgive her for it? Not entirely, at least not at first, but he does understand...more or less. Despite the bitterness, however, he hasn't changed really, and he's still wholly willing to do almost anything if it will make her happy or keep her safe. He may be inflexible on some points regarding their relationship or regarding how some things have to happen to achieve the desired results, but he is always supportive of Cat and her abilities and has no problem following her lead when necessary. And when a critical mistake or two of hers nearly spells disaster for them? He thinks quickly, acts to save the situation, and never once voices anything more than a few mild recriminations to her.
Overall I think I enjoyed this book even more than the first one, which makes me even more excited to read the rest of them. If it continues to get better and better like this, then the series will certainly live up to its billing. As for some of the hype I've heard regarding this book and a particular chapter in it? Totally deserved. A certain book with a color in its name has nothing on the scorching hot kink that Cat and Bones engage in here, and I daresay there are few women that wouldn't want to experience at least a portion of what goes on here. Turn the fan on high before you start on it, and a bit of solitude might not be bad if you can manage it either
The book is more than just one super-sexy chapter however, and the main plot and character development we see not just with Cat and Bones but with many of the side characters as well is definitely worth the read. We get to see several key people slowly begin to relax their prejudices and undergo an attitude shift with regards to supernatural beings which should make far more nuanced interactions possible in the future. Though it likely goes without saying from everything I've said in this review, I most definitely recommend this book and this series to anyone that likes paranormal romance or urban fantasy. Come for the kickass heroine, the droolicious hero, and the super hot sexy-times, and then stay for the rich world in which bad guys aren't always entirely bad and the good guys sometimes do less-than-savory things. 5 solid stars for this one.
It's been four years since Cat left Bones and he has finally found her again. He is determined to show her that they can make their relationship work. But first they have to deal with a bounty on her head.
Cat is a hardened hunter now and keeps everyone at arm's reach. Leaving Bones destroyed her but she has built a new life hunting vampires with the government. Cat has become so much stronger since the previous book. She was ruthless and determined before but now she is even more so. I liked her a lot more in this one because she wasn’t so prejudiced against vampires and has grown a lot.
Bones is just as flirty as in the previous book, but we also see his ruthless side. Cat leaving really brought out the darker side of him and now he isn’t afraid to show it, especially in front of Cat. Their relationship was just as steamy and intense as in the previous book, but this time it felt more emotional. They had to work through the pain of the separation and overcome Cat’s fears of the government.
I enjoyed Cat’s team of humans. They were a unique bunch of men and I am interested in seeing more of them in the future, especially since they are still struggling to deal with all the changes that are happening. We also get to meet Ian, Bones maker, in this and his grandsire, Mencheres. Both are very interesting characters and I can’t wait to learn more about them. Ian does seem to be a bit of an ass though.
Overall, I really enjoyed the continuation of the Cat and Bones story. I can’t wait to see where the next book will take us. Also, I really wish we got Bones POV for this series because I would have loved to have known his thoughts in some of these scenes.

Cat is a vampire slayer and this book continues 4 years after the first book finished, Cat left Bones, thinking that she was saving his life by doing so, and joined an elite paranormal division of the FBI where she heads up a squad of demon slayers. She's never forgotten Bones and although she's forging a great career and great friendships with her team she's lonely and misses Bones.
On a job to 'despatch' a vampire, she meets Ian and realises that he's Bone's friend. As she feels she owes Bones a favour, she lets Ian live..... I'm not going to give away the rest of the story but it's a good one!
There is alot of humour in Jeaniene's books, you can really feel the camaradary between the team and, if you're like me, you'll find you've got a silly grin on your face during some of it too. One sign that I love a series is that I spent the first few chapters anxiously waiting for Bones to reappear in Cat's life!
Generally I consider this to be an urban fantasy with some sex (some pretty hot sex!) rather than a paranormal romance. It's just so much more than a romance. The writing is good and fluid, the characters are people you want to get to know, the plot is well thought out and it's funny!
Thoroughly recommended.
The reading order is:
HALFWAY TO THE GRAVE
ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE
AT GRAVE'S END
DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE
FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON
ETERNAL KISS OF DARKNESS
THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE
ONE GRAVE AT A TIME

This is the second book in the Night Huntress series (after Halfway to the Grave ) and I was really looking forward to reading it. There's a huge gap between the end of the first and beginning of this, but somehow the author manages to slip in all the relevant backstory without info dumping or getting off track.
The story is just as action packed as before, just with a wider cast as Cat's FBI team now play a key role in her hunts and she's made friends during her time away from Bones. Other characters from Bones's past are also introduced leading to a better understanding of his character. The storyline manages to pick up threads from Cat's past and combine them with her present in a way that creates a tale that sucks you in and doesn't let go.
Cat has matured since the previous book and doesn't react quite as instinctively as before, although she still gets annoyed easily and kicks serious butt. Bones has also become more open and got over his fear of losing Cat, which means there are some big revelations of how the vampire (and ghoul) world works which really adds to the realism of the books. Annoyingly Cat's mother returns and is just as hysterical as before.
All in all, this was a great read and I'm really looking forward to reading At Grave's End .

Cat and Bones adventures become more and more interesting. Their relationship developing quite nicely, but they have to face numerous dangers along the way.
They are a good team in more ways than one. Enjoyable series.

Cat and Bones have been apart for nearly five years and Cat works for a secret Govt agency taking out Vampires.
Bones is as ever, unapologetic, sarcastic, funny and sexy.
Cat has grown up since book 1, being apart from Bones and her work has made her harder, tougher and generally more kick ass.
It was a fast paced read, full of banter, action and fun.
How Cat and Bones first meet again after their separation was brilliant.
I love how much Bones loves Cat and is not afraid to show it.
More was introduced about Vampire society and other Characters, such as Ian and Mencheres are introduced here.
Great book in a great series!

I was so so so happy when Bones came back. Don't get me wrong I still liked the story with just Cat but it didn't feel right with Bones missing. Frost had a great way of reintroducing him as I wasn't expecting it until the last minute.
We also get to find out a little more about Cats past and her family, which I won't mention in case anyone hasn't read the books because it is a bit of a spoiler.
I absolutely love the passion between heat and Bones so I loved the rivalry bewtween Cat and Bones and how Bones shows his devotion to Cat *wink wink chapter 32* . I really like how Frost has managed to make their relationship so beautiful without being soppy or cringe worthy .
Love.Love Love.
