Lots of angst...not a lot of resolution

The premise of this book was fabulous and timely. The writing was spot on and engaging. The characters were well done, and the conflicts were angst ridden. I was totally invested in the story. Unfortunately, the ending felt rushed and a bit unsatisfying.

There were so many relationships woven throughout the book and as I turned the last page, I was left with many questions. What happened to Finn and his brothers? Did Francine and Drew marry? What about their baby? I assume that Sawyer and Serenity stayed together…at least they’re both there when they visit Reagan in New York. Where does Rally end up? What about Lorelei? Lucy? How did Serenity’s siblings take their new relationship? With the twist at the end, do Serenity, Reagan, and Lorelei have other siblings? Way too many questions. The epilogue seemed like a cliff hanger, rather than a vehicle to tie up the loose ends.

I’m a fan of Brenda Novak and her books are on my auto-buy list. I’ll continue to purchase and read her books. As I stated above, the writing is always good. Sometimes the stories are detail heavy. With One Perfect Summer, the details were relevant and moved the story along. I’m hoping this is book one, and we’ll see the resolution of the sister’s story in book two!

FINAL DECISION: A solid summer read. This book has plenty of self-discovery and relationship building between the newly discovered sisters. I enjoyed this, but women's fiction is not my favorite.

THE STORY: When using a DNA test, Serenity Alston discovers two half sisters. As three meet for the first time, each of them is facing a crisis in their lives. Serenity has testified against her own husbands for crimes he committed which has caused conflicts in her family along with her questioning her own judgment. Lorelei's marriage has crumbled when her husband had an affair with her best friend. Reagan has had an affair with a married co-worker. Each of these women is struggling even as they are trying to see what relationship they can have with their newly discovered biological half-sisters.

OPINION: I liked this book as these three women try to create a relationship between them as their lives are complicated by men and children. There is quite a bit of drama and an attempt at an overarching mystery of how these three ended up related. That part of the book didn't work for me as well as the relationship building between these characters. The ending of the book really seemed to switch the mood of the story.

For me, the best part of the relationship between these sisters is how they come to accept one another. None of them is perfect and the acceptance is important to the story.

There is a lot of issues with men in this book and at times I just wanted to say -- figure out your own life and worry about men later. I prefer romances and even though I knew that this was women's fiction, I enjoy the author so I gave this one a chance. It was certainly a good and different read that is a perfect summer beach read.

WORTH MENTIONING: This is a woman's fiction book not a romance even though relationships with men are involved in the book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: ONE PERFECT SUMMER is a standalone.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Unless this is a series there are too many loose ends. Three women find out they are half siblings. The entire book is taken up with their search. They meet for the first time at a vacation house and decide to stay for the summer. I kept feeling as if I was rolling a boulder uphill. Kinda didn’t care by the end.

This book is amazing, you have three woman who agree to meet after a DNA test. Turns out they are half sisters that live in three differant parts of the USA. Now move forward 6 months out they are meeting for a week at Lake Tahoe, California in a cabin. Brenda has written a well developed storyline with many twist and turns. You have believable and likeable characters that flow well with the storyline. You have Lorilie a stay at home Mom, Serenity a novelist, and you have Reagan who is in advertising. All three of the sisters have personal issues in their own lives and appear to be falling apart. You also have Lucy, Lorelie's daughter who is cute as four year old children are. She has a tendency to say what is on her mind. The sisters are bonding and agree to extend the time in the cabin for the summer while they search for answers as to who their father is? This book is written so well you will not guess who the father is. It is totally unexpected and not something I would guess. Erin Bennett does the narration so well she maintains your interest. I highly recommend this book.

This book is a definite 5 stars for me. The intertwining of the characters' stories is amazing. I became so invested in them that I wanted to shake some of them, hug some of them, laugh with some of them, cry with ALL of them, and genuinely cared about what the outcome was going to be for each. At one point, I was so "ticked" at one character, I put the book down, and walked off muttering, "No, just no, you moron!" The finale came out of the blue for me ... I did not see that coming. This just reinforces my opinion that Brenda Novak is a consummate storyteller. Thank you!!!! ❤
