5.0 out of 5 starsLOST!!!
Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2020
Getting lost anywhere is lousy. One wrong turn can take you miles out of the way especially in unfamiliar surroundings and you might never find your way back. So just imagine being lost in the woods with no cell phone service, dead car battery, and almost no food and water. That is what makes the new book “One by One” by Frieda McFadden so terrifying and all absorbing. Three couples on the way to a vacation hotel become lost in the woods. There may be all sorts of insects, some poisonous, wild animals, rain and heat with no shelter. The author makes you feel like you are really there and on top of it all weird things start happening to the three couples and I could not do anything else while I was reading this book. There is a completely unexpected, not see coming twist at the end. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fast moving thriller.

I thought I had found another quality author of psychological thriller, one who impeccably plotted books, with logical and plausible stories. This book is a sad exception. The story is so preposterous. Six people that lost in the forest for days (in a North -American wood, with roads, cabins and inns, not in the depths of the Amazon jungle). Among them, an insane couple of murderers who were planning a revenge on another couple based on very flimsy motives.. The third couple dies in the wood, killed by the two murderers, for no discernible reason. The whole story is so preposterous, which, was considering the quality of the books of this author, , it’s really irritating.. It is well written, which makes it even more irritating.

2.0 out of 5 stars Implausible to say the least

A van full of vacationers breaks down on the road that leads to the mountain inn they are supposed to stay at. With little in the way of food, water, or supplies, rather than just WALK UP THE ROAD towards their location they enter the deep woods and try and find the hotel that way, getting immediately lost. No one is that stupid.

3.0 out of 5 stars Had promise, but ending not believable

It started out promising , but the flaws became too numerous to be ignored after awhile . Primary question I have remains : WHO , or what , caused the van to die? If not engineered ( again, by whom), then how would this just fortuitously happen to aid the killers' plan?
The main couple was somewhat likeable; the others weird and unbelievable. Ending EXTREMELY implausible. I mean - enjoy it as a suspension of any reality whatsoever , but that's all.
And why would all SIX of supposedly mature , educated, and professional people still believe there was a resort Inn in the first place!! They were still believing that at 80% of book.
Also , female main character deals with marital infidelity very cavalierly. Im no Bible- thumper but it was sort of jarring.

3.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it, but...

My rating is probably closer to 3.5 stars because I did really like this book. It was very easy to get into, and the plot moved along quickly. I stayed engaged throughout.

There were some plausibility problems and plot holes. The writing was simplistic and there were a few grammar errors that I found distracting, but I’m being nit picky, because as I said, overall I enjoyed it.

The story is about 6 friends in their 30’s who are going away for a week to a remote inn together. When their minivan breaks down in the woods, they become lost and forced to survive, but one by one (roll credits) they start to meet an ill fate.

I found it hard to believe these people were adults. They acted like the kids from Scooby-Doo, Mystery Machine and all. The main character, Claire, was unbelievably naive and stupid. The author purposely makes her scattered so the reader has no idea what’s really going on.

The big “twist” at the end is a little absurd. The author purposely misleads the reader, and in some ways it works. If you don’t take it too seriously, this is just a fun book. I am glad I read it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!

Author lead us to think "Anonymous" was a man. I thought the killer was Jack or Warner. Not Lindsay! It is hard to believe no one suspected Lindsay was a dangerous psycho for over twenty years!! The reader is curious about what is going on and unfortunately, continues reading to discover who is the real antagonist. Michelle was a tough "cookie", she would not have wondered off into the woods at night with Warner, especially with a broken ankle. She didn't even know him!

For this book, the plot needs to be " tighten up"!!

3.0 out of 5 stars A good effort but falls short

I enjoyed it, unfortunately it didn't deliver what I hoped for. The story was a bit sloppy and the characters were flat and under developed which is sad because it had promise for awhile. Its tough when the internal dialogue is unrealistic, it makes one disengage from the fantasy that is story telling. Character development is a must, without it you have words strung together in sentences and nothing more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy
Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2022

This was a quick and easy read. The writing was fairly simple, but free of grammatical errors. The plot revealed an unexpected twist, which is always nice. The characters were pretty well developed. I will say that they were all pretty flawed/annoying in their own ways, in a way that made me not care if any or all of them died.

It was a good read for what it was. It would make a nice break after a deep, emotionally invested book.

After spending the first five chapters of this book stuck inside the head of a woman who hates her husband, I'd had more then enough. Not like the guy is abusive or anything - apparently he's just annoying enough to actively hate. Oh and she's staying with him for the sake of their children, but apparently cheating on him with his best friend will have no repercussions. The toxicity that oozes from these pages is so sad that I had no interest in continuing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a walk in the woods
Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2022

The book isn't terrible. I figured it out pretty quickly but the story was interesting enough I finished it. It wasn't very realistic - who wanders around the woods for days based on an unreadable map and the assurance "Its right over there". And it wasn't really scary. Most of the suspense seemed contrived. But it brought back fun memories of camping as a child.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid 'who dunnit' book

This book held my attention and kept me guessing nearly till the end. I questioned the intelligence of some of the characters - you probably will too - but suspended belief for sake of the enjoyment of the book. In this day and age with technology, I would imagine it is a little harder to write the Agatha Christie type book when so much information is available at our fingertips. Overall, though, a good, suspenseful book with a bit of a far fetched ending. But still worth a read.
