David Thorne is a writer who spends his time in NYC and Newport Beach California. The love of his life, Emily Carlino, went missing late one night, 10 years ago, on a road north of Santa Barbara. Her body was never recovered. This is the "grab" that brings the two men together. David, on the pretext of interviewing Jessup for an upcoming book, is trying to find out if Emily is one of the women missing from Jessup’s kill tally. He wants closure.
And into the story comes Maddison – a dead ringer in every way to the missing Emily. In each and every way down to the most intimate detail, Maddison mirrors Emily. Where did she come from, why did their paths cross in that ocean-side restaurant? David’s life is turned upside down. This is a dark story of psychological suspense told by the master.
There is more to this story than the summary indicates though; as the book ventures into multiple genres and is broader in scope than many of the suspense stories that I've read. It is not just a great page-turning mystery, but combines an almost 'drunk-with-romantic-bliss' vagueness and even elements of science fiction to really add to the mystery and keep the reader wondering about what exactly is happening.
Koontz is obviously a master of suspense, and this book didn't disappoint at all in that category. The pacing is fantastic, and the characters seem very real. Certain things don't exactly make sense to the protagonist, but his reactions seem believable. Koontz really nails this premise about a person that has lost the love of their life and aches for their return: if you're somehow afforded an opportunity to be with someone like them again, you might overlook or block out certain things because you're so obsessed with this second chance. The mystery progresses, and as the stakes get higher, strange events start to make the reader and the protagonist both wonder if he is going mad...
I really enjoyed this book, especially the first half, and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I wasn't exactly the biggest fan of the ending, but it at least kept my interest the entire time. I was surprised, and maybe a tiny bit disappointed when it was over, but I enjoyed the ride. It wasn't perfect, but I can't complain much about a book that I felt compelled to read in one sitting. 4.5 / 5

Well-written and cleverly done, I enjoyed the tale, as I knew I would. The element of 'something different and mysterious' are just two of the reasons this author is my favourite.
NB: This is supposed to be a kindle-in-motion book with interactive elements but despite having media enabled and set to auto-play no interactive elements materialised.
