A great book with great characters and a lot of intense moments. Really enjoy how all the characters eventuality end up coming together. Kibure trying to figure out about his magic and who he is. Aynward a very arrogant prince but he realizes his friends are more important than his wellbeing. Friends will be gain but some will be lost. Lots of twist and turns in the book that will keep you reading till the end. I really enjoyed the book and looking forward to the next in series.

As the best books do, this book starts out slow and steady, loading you up with backstory and history. Some of the characters are hard to sympathize with in the beginning, but by the end of the book, you're rooting for their success. This was a wonderfully written fantasy with incredible world-building and great characters. After I finished it, I read it to my son and he thoroughly enjoyed it as well!! We can't wait to dive into the next in the series!!

He enjoyed very much the story development and being along for the joy and the journey when he gets a book he settles in and looks forward to he read he isn't looking for a drive through style fast and done in a bite but something with substance, style and this book was it!! If you enjoy books like the Storm Blessed Series or the Mistborn series The Wheel of Time Series, stories with plots and character development and a great story that unravels over time as you unpack it through the pages, then you will enjoy this one too. We'll done to the author and we will be getting the second book in the series and looking for more

The Other Magic (Passage to Dawn Book 1) by Derrick Smythe is a fantasy story about a world of magic. In this world there are priests who have the ability to wield magic. They receive the control over this magic but being devoted to their god. However, there is a second kind of magic that is unknown to the priests. They discover this when Kibure, a slave, is being punished. In a moment of desperation, he is able to summon the second kind of magic to his defense. The priests are obviously blown away by this and immediately assume that he must be working for the Dark Lord. Kibure then finds himself on the run in order to try and keep himself alive because he does not understand how to use the magic that he has just discovered. Other characters come into his life, each with their own motivations with some being dark and some being kind, but it will be up to Kibure to watch his back and keep himself alive.
I really enjoyed reading this. I found that it has lots of the great elements of fantasy novels while cutting out some of the ones that drag them into dictionary length reads. There are lots of characters, but they are introduced fairly quickly and with enough backstory to understand but not enough to drag the story out. The locations are also described in great detail, while not being overwhelming. It is still a long read, and I think it could be shortened down a bit, but the chapters are short which helps to pull the reader in. Fans of fantasies will greatly enjoy this read and the characters it has to offer.

This is a fairly long book, with, from memory, 137 chapters. If you wanted to sum it up to its basics, not an awful lot actually happens, but what does happen is told from the points of view the main characters, Kibure, Aynward, Grobenaar, and Sindri in brisk short chapters. Another important "character" is Rave, a raven, or a raaven. (I am not sure what the difference is). The setting is a mythical land where priests can use magic, which comes from their god. Kibure, however, is a slave, and when being punished, he inadvertently uses magic as a defence, and since he is not a priest he is labelled as an agent of the evil "Dark Lord". Kibure's problem is that while he has magic, he has no idea how to use it. So basically throughout this book he is either captured or fleeing. Later, we find the priests are unaware there is a second sort of magic, hence the title.
Thee writing is good, and while these characters skirt around the same thing, we get different perspectives. Each chapter ends in a cliffhanger and while overall I dislike cliffhangers, and there are about 137 of them, I found the overall reading experience quite interesting. The characters and the terrain are well depicted. The best I can say for the action is the actual important action is well spaced, and oddly enough, not enough was made of minor characters like Theo. One thing I liked is that a wielder of magic has a price to pay, but having said that, some like Grobenaar does not seem to pay it. Nevertheless, definitely an interesting read for lockdown.

I almost binned this several times in the first 25 % or so. There's a coming of age element with two of the central characters which I found tedious. One was a young slave boy who has magical abilities but doesn't know how to use them. He doesn't know much about anything really. Then there's a snot nosed teenager described as arrogant, privileged and entitled which is right on the mark. There's lots of long detailed descriptions as he does his world building bit but after a slow build up things do get going and a pretty good story emerges. There's a good ending too which sets up the next book very nicely.

As thos book starts, it's scattered, stilting, stuttered. There are many players on the board and we have to take the time to get to know each one. I won't lie, I found it difficult, not to follow, but to engage. We meet each person through snippets of their stories. When I hit the 40% mark though, I was truly in the thick of it. The world building, the history, the explanation of the magic use and lore, was nothing less than brilliant. I very much enjoyed it. All the intertwining threads and the fast pace it picked up. So enthralling.

Bit slow but over quick at the same time . His writing lacks maturity and descriptive talent at the moment. Characters high emotions appear and disappear immediately. Some of the writing/events are just not interesting and others are very forced - and he uses hyphens too much....
Over half way through one character is told to return to deal with the invasion - something not mentioned before.

I'm sure the story itself will be great. But very dissapointed with condition of the book. Not sure if it was damaged in transit as there was a bottle also in package and neither of the items were individually wrapped. Although it's more likely the book was damaged before.
I always choose real books over digital versions. But never purchase damaged ones. I leave those in the shop.
This has made me rethink online shopping. It is probably my last book order. Sorry but I'm really dissapointed and this book will be read and then charity shopped.
