I almost gave it a 4 because it was a little slow in places, but overall, I didn't want to miss a word because a new element would be added. The story appears to be straightforward about Mack (Mackenzie) a detective who has an unusual background. Mack's current case is two missing girls, friends who disappeared a year apart. After a long while, we find out there are more girls missing and from there the story gets interesting until the resolution which is twisted, Mack resolves a personal issue and then the cliffhanger. I can hardly wait to read book 2 and see what happens. If you buy it, stick with it long enough for the story to take off.

While I enjoy reading mysteries/thrillers with strong female protagonists, and Mac was certainly one of them; I did not find her very likable. She was harsh with both her colleagues and husband; she could have "lightened up" a little bit without betraying her strength. Also, the author repeatedly brought in her troubled past; while it was necessary to establish the character and maybe refer to a few additional times, it appeared too often in the book. While the case and the investigation itself was interesting, I had difficulty finishing; ultimately skimming through chapters till the last. I must admit that the ending was unexpected. So, if my curiosity gets the better of me, I may read the next one.

Good Start to a New Series

Mackenzie Price is a detective in Lakemore, a town forever defined by its football team. When a high school student goes missing she is assigned the case and links it to another missing girl from the year before and then a body is found.

Mack is a survivor, her father was a violent alcoholic who beat and abused her mother until she finally snapped and killed him. With the case leading nowhere and problems with her marriage Detective Price finds her memories overwhelming her regularly and knows she has to hold it all together if she's to do her job properly.

I enjoyed this but there was an awful lot going on and I had to go back to find out who people were a few times which is never a good thing. The story was told in two timeframes and I felt some of the background could have been saved until book two. The main protagonists aren't as fully formed as they could be but hopefully they will continue to evolve but if Mack still has as many flashbacks as this time she could be out of a job! There is a cliffhanger of an ending which did surprise me. It should make a very good part of the next installment.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new series to get their teeth into.

I really enjoyed the premise of this book. The characterisation was excellent, the detective had a fantastic sense of humour, and was committed to her job as much as she wanted to retain what made her want to become a cop. Her backstory was plausible and I loved the little twist relating to it at the end. The story was good but I felt a lot of the conversations between staff members of the police force took precedence over the plot, and at times this dragged on without really moving the story forward. I think it could have been edited and sharpened up as it was a little long-winded, especially in the middle and I found myself wanting to skip pages just to reach some action, however the pace did pick back up at the end and I did enjoy it. Overall, a very good debut. I've already ordered the next in the series which I hope is shorter and more snappy.

This is a new author for me and to start with I wasn't sure whether I'd continue reading this book as it seemed to be slow going.

However I did continue with and was glad I did because it did get better as the pace increased.
If you can get past the the first few chapters then I think you'll enjoy the book. I did enjoy the story and I've bought the books that follow on from this one.

This is a good story but for me spoilt by the very unlikeable main character, I have just read the second book in the series and unfortunately she is still very unlikeable which for me was very grating. If there is a third book hopefully she softens up a bit and makes the storyline more enjoyable.
