We fear discovery when we should fear what there is to discover.
Lovecraft and his successors show a world where human civilisation is only a thin veneer over black seas of ignorance. A world where men exalted for their reason uncover logic-defying truths. A world where the marginalised discover uncaring horror on the fringes of a society that rejects them. A world where the bonds between us unravel.
But what of those who wear their own averageness like a veneer? Neither drawn toward the horror by academic curiosity nor driven their by society, but unmoored by a mundane secret.
A Spanish priest struggling with base desires plots to save a native child from brutal sacrifice.
A veteran hiding the extent of his mental wounds discovers the true war on terror is very different.
A delinquent’s secret passion for stamp collecting draws him into a dark bargain.
And nine more tales of overtly normal people coming adrift in an incomprehensible universe.

About the authors
Glenn A. Bruce, MFA, has written professionally since 1979, but as he says, "I've been a writer and storyteller all my life."
Glenn was born in Miami, FL, where he played in rock bands into his 20s. He then moved to Los Angeles for 21 years where he wrote for film and TV. His best known credits include "Kickboxer," "Baywatch," "Walker: Texas Ranger," "Assaulted Nuts" for CineMax, and the original "G.L.O.W. Show." While in L.A., he directed several large-scale live theatre productions.
In 2000, Glenn moved back to a family second-home in the mountains of NC where he became a professor at Appalachian State University for 25 semester, teaching Screenwriting, Acting for the Camera, and Video Production, which resulted in several awards for screenwriting, directing, and producing. In 2008, at the encouragement of friends and family, he dove into long fiction and has completed over 30 novels from thrillers to horror to westerns to family comedy-dramas.
Glenn's strengths are offbeat, clearly defined characters, dark and frequent humor, and a strong storytelling bent. "I believe that in order to engage a reader more than once, we must tell interesting, uncommon stories, with plenty of surprises, a satisfying ending, and some good laughs along the way."
Glenn writes a blog on writing called "RITR (sic)" on Goodread: https://tinyurl.com/2p8732c6

Dave Higgins writes and publishes speculative fiction, often with a dark edge. Despite forays into the mundane worlds of law and IT, he was unable to completely escape the liminal zone between mystery and horror.
His short stories have appeared in several magazines and anthologies, including All These Shiny Worlds, Millhaven’s Tales of Suspense, and DimensionBucket. He published his first solo novel, Seven Stones: The Complete Series, a gritty fantasy homage to pulp serials, in 2018. He has also co-authored two humorous trilogies with Simon Cantan.
In January 2019, he established Abstruse Press, an imprint releasing speculative fiction anthologies.
Born in the least mystically significant part of Wiltshire, England, and raised by a librarian, he started reading shortly after birth and has not stopped since. He currently lives in Bristol with his wife, Nicola, his cats, Jasper and Una, a giant sack of coffee beans, a plush altar to the Dark Lord Cthulhu, and many shelves of books.
It’s rumoured he writes and publishes out of a fear that he will otherwise run out of things to read.

Samantha Bryant believes in love, magic, and unexplainable connections between people. Her favorite things are lonely beaches, untamed cliff tops, sunlight through the leaves of trees, summer rains, and children's laughter. She lives in North Carolina, grew up in Kentucky, and left her heart in Alaska. She is fierce at heart, though she doesn't look it.
She reads poetry and comic books, sometimes on the same day because she contains multitudes.
She writes blogs, poems, essays, and novels. Mostly she writes about things that scare or worry her because writing is a great work to work things out. Someday, she hopes to make her living solely as a writer. In the meantime, she also teaches middle school Spanish, which, admittedly, is an odd choice for money-earning, especially in North Carolina.
When she's not writing or teaching, Samantha enjoys time with her family, watching old movies, baking, reading, and going places. Her favorite gift is tickets (to just about anything).
I was born in Cuba and migrated to the United States as a young man. I became an engineer and lawyer and practiced for nearly fifty years. I retired, turned my attention to creative writing, and authored many short stories of various genres. My stories have been published or accepted for publication in about fifty paying short story anthologies, magazines, audio books and podcasts. A collection of some of my stories has also been accepted for publication under the title "Times and Places."
