About the Author

David Wood, OBE, is an actor, playwright, composer, theater producer and director, author, and magician. He began acting and writing at Oxford University in the 1960s and has since been dubbed the national childrens dramatist by The Times (London). He wrote his first childrens play in 1967 and has written nearly sixty since. He directed many of his plays for his own company, Whirligig Theatre, which toured to major theaters nationwide. On television he performed magic in the BBC series Tricky Business, and appeared as a magician in Jimll Fix It. In the Queen's Birthday Honors, 2004, David was awarded the OBE for his services to literature and drama. He is married to Jacqueline Stanbury, with whom he has two daughters.

Alan Baxter is a multi-award-winning British-Australian author who writes supernatural thrillers and urban horror, rides a motorcycle and loves his dogs. He also teaches Kung Fu. He lives among dairy paddocks on the beautiful south coast of NSW, Australia, with his wife, son, dogs and a cranky old cat. He is the author of the dark supernatural thriller trilogy, Bound, Obsidian, and Abduction (The Alex Caine Series), and the dark supernatural duology, RealmShift and MageSign (The Balance 1 and 2). His latest books are the horror noir novel, Hidden City and the cosmic horror novella, The Book Club. Alan Baxter is a British-Australian, multi-award-winning author of horror, supernatural thrillers, and dark fantasy. He’s also a martial arts expert, a whisky-soaked swear monkey, and dog lover. He creates dark, weird stories among dairy paddocks on the beautiful south coast of NSW, Australia, where he lives with his wife, son, hound and other creatures.
He is the author of several novels, including the Alex Caine trilogy, Bound, Obsidian and Abduction, The Balance duology, RealmShift and MageSign, the urban horror noir novel, Hidden City, and the horror/crime thriller Devouring Dark. He’s also written several novellas, including the cosmic horror thriller The Book Club, the supernatural noir Eli Carver novella series, Manifest Recall and Recall Night, with a third volume on the way, and the wildly popular gonzo horror novella, The Roo. Hyper-horror-sci-fi fiction... Bravo!

I am not the best book reviewer. I know that, so I can only try my best to put down what I enjoyed about this (yet another) book by Wood and Baxter without unwanted hints and spoilers, so I'll do my best: I've read a couple of stories by these two authors and would love to be a fly on the wall and listen in on these two as they create; talk about some SERIOUSLY crazy brain storming sessions! This was a fast paced story of creepy stuff that takes place far down in a deep, hell-ish maze of a setting that made my claustrophobia act up something terribly! Just think of some of H.P. Lovecraft's weirdness, crossed with the Raiders of the Lost Ark, and a dash of The Cave, then roll it alllll up into a huge freaky-deaky ball! Jeez... And the authors have tons of this type of stuff just... waiting.. waiting for the unsuspecting reader to trip (as I did) into the snare of their unique type of hyper-horror-sci-fi fiction. I was vey sorry to see the Sam Aston series (only temporarily I hope) come to an end.

This book starts off interestingly enough but about 50% of the way in, it started to lose me. Now in the author's defense, I was expecting another creature feature like the first one was. However, it became clear that this was more of an Indiana Jones type of adventure and not a Peter Benchley style underwater thriller. Which is all fine and dandy, but not what I was looking for. At least there's some resolution to Sam and Jo's story in this one, but it's also annoying with all the drama. Sam Aaron is also kind of immature, egotistical and misogynist at times with how he interacts with female characters at times so hopefully his character will develop better as we go through the series.

So overall, the story was decent but not what I was expecting, and after that, I just didn't care anymore. I'll let others make their own assessments however.

The first book was better. This one has a few too many weird creatures, previously undiscovered species, etc. The last bit of the book was so far out there that the wrap up felt unrealistic. Still, I read it all the way through, so it gets 3 stars. One thing that annoys me is that every time someone in this book gets terrified, the authors feel impelled to mention how the character wets their pants. Once can be effective. Four or five times? Not so much.

It was a little more over the top in plot and the creature featured in the book was pretty scary. It was a nice read and way more action filled this time around.

The potential of the first book was more realized this time around. Now, keep it up.

- there is much less about the actual monster
- the story is less captivating and somewhat predictable

So, will I buy a third one? Probably..., after I've read some reviews...

This is the second book I have read where the characters are Aston and Slater. Both times they engaged prehistoric animals formerly thought to be extinct. The adventures (The first book was Pemordial) were pretty good. There is a relationship interest between these two but business is always first. Aston always has scientific reasoning while Slater has her journalistic instincts. Look forward to the next book.

Okay, well, I was overloaded with joy while I was reading this. Another adventure for Sam, and this time he meets the big daddy of monsters. The setting in Antarctic caves, is perfection. Monsters, more than one kind and taking a tip from the TV series Survivor and having the people eat/ drink yucky stuff was a nice touch. All in all crazy good fun with a bit of everything I wanted.
