These other reviewers are being rediculous.

I've been a movie buff my whole life, I'm critical of many movies and deeply love others. This is a slow but strong burning movie. It is packed with emotion and if you aren't predisposed with criticism like these other reviewers than you will find yourself breathless for the whole second half of the film. I could never predict what would happen next. The acting was great, the visuals were spectacular, it makes for more than just a movie but an adventure. I would recommend it to anyone.

Don't miss this movie.

Charlie was strong in this role, totally authentic. His acting gets better and better. Rami Malek has a new fan in me, he immersed himself in the role as did Charlie. I found myself thinking of Steve and Dustin in their interpretations of the roles and Charlie and Rami brought Oscar caliber performances too. The movie will stick with you for a while too.

Disappointing
Verified purchase
Based on the trailer, I thought this was good and entertaining. But 10 minutes into it, it was obvious that it was simply a bad attempt at a remake. The acting was terrible and the little guy with the dark hair and poked out mouth made things even worst because instead of playing a character, he decided he'd try muddling through by imitating Dustin Hoffman who played in the original. The storyline--even the original was unconvincing, but after reading the original book, I could see why--the author strung together a bunch of stories about a lot people who experienced that bad prison treatment--and probably made up some of it along the way for dramatic effect.

Still a great story

Not as good as the original, I’d say a fan of both though. This new version lacks detail in some places and adds detail in other places. Still a great story. I’d say over all McQueen did it better so did Hoffman, but the new actors didn’t do bad. Might have liked the movie more if there was no first to compare it to?

Similar but just not quite the same

I guess if one hasn't seen Papillon with Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen this would be a good movie. It held my attention and and the acting was good. There just wasn't the same connection between the two main characters as there was in the original movie. Story line is of course the same but I didn't feel the same emotions as I did in the original

this was a wonderful movie about persistance loyalty and a beautiful friendship between two men. very inspiring and very heart warming, lots of action and suspense and emotions. i fell in love with the two main characters, and their friendship and dedication to each other was beautiful. if you like a good drama, with beautiful endings that leave you with warm loving feelings. this awe inspiring drama will be a wonderful delight. the fact that it was a true story makes it even more beautiful. im so glad this story was told and i know that you will be too after taking it all in.

Remake of 1973 Steven Mcqueen Movie
Verified purchase
Hi, while not an exact remake, the 1973 screen play is given a credit . The earlier movie had some great cinematography. The opening scene in the 1973 film of the loading of the prisoners is awesome. The book Papillon is very similar to "Dry Guillotine", written by René Belbenoît, and was published in 1938, available at Amazon. Years before (1969) Henri Charrière's Papillon. All in all it's not a bad movie.
