The writing is fine. Aside from the MC being written as an idiot. The premise is interesting, a new take on the system apocalypse genre. It was none the less a struggle for me to finish. In almost any given scene the MC can be counted on to miss or flat out ignore the information he is given and do something pointless or stupid there by creating a meandering path to the books end. Just meh. Both these guys have written a lot and this seems a pretty weak effort.

Our MC, Auric is 18 and still stuck at the bottom tier of power. He’s maxed out and his grandma(who’s his guardian) won’t let him try and advance. Enter teenage stupidity and recklessness that ends with things going haywire. All this set in a backdrop of a post apocalyptic USA after a mysterious System has changed the world 100 years ago. An enjoyable book, with a relatable MC if you can recall your teenage years. Plot twists make for an enjoyable bit of interesting surprise, and the powers that Auric develops are pretty cool too!

I really wanted to like this book, as it has some very good ideas, but everything about the MC is just... shoddy. (SPOILER ALERT) This world's system is very interesting, with successive tiers(D, C, B, A) characters can move through that have increasing level caps(10 at D, 20 at C) which disappear on A tier. However, when you Tier Up you reset your general level and your attributes, and keep only skill levels. You are also assigned a new class and lose the old one, along with all class abilities, and each successive tier gets 2 more attribute points per level than the previous one, so a level 30 B tier would be substantially weaker than a level 30 A tier, but waaay stronger than a level 1 A tier. That's great, very interesting and could potentially be a great narrative device. However, it is said in the beginning of the book that your A tier class is supposed to completely reflect your personality and all A tier classes are supposed to be very powerful. However, this isn't the case for the MC. Not only is his class pretty shit compared to even B tiers that appear in the book, it doesn't match what we see from his personality at all. Another shortcoming is that the MC is all over the place. Before he ascends to A tier, he's supposed to be the personification of determination, a hard worker, someone who's received a bad lot in life but is still determined to make the most of it. This disappears the minute he tiers up. From then on, he has a RADICAL personality shift and there are enough comments about "Oh but this is going to take too much work" that I noticed it. Overall, the book isn't bad, it just isn't good either, there's little to no mention of stats and they don't seem to mean anything except when they do.
