Wonderful story; mean tacked-on cliffhanger!

This was such a great story! I loved the main character and shop, her funny sign and the hard work she put into her magic-disc-operated toy cats. (This is a strange thing to say about a paranormal story, but the magic actually made sense - I can see that if you get distracted and get a stray intention into the spell, your animation can go wrong and develop weird personality quirks! Why did they only chase her real kitty Tom, and not the laid-back Alley? Poor Tom ;-)

I loved this story so much that I have to take a star off for the cliffhanger ending, taking away the good feels from the resolution of the mystery - in a 1st book of the series, with no second book in sight!! That was just meanness on the author's part; totally unnecessary when a small thump at the door and an opportunity to pre-order the next book would have been more than enough of a teaser to set things up.

A charming page-turner

This story is set in a small town with a "thing" for cats. The annual "Here and Meow" festival is the town's claim to fame and the town abounds with cat-themed names on businesses and street signs. The main character, Amber, is a witch who uses her still-developing abilities to create enchanted toys for the town's children and tourists. The author's description of the little toys is so vivid that I can picture them delighting young and old alike (and I desperately want one). The author has obviously spent a considerable time around cats, as anyone who has had a feline companion will find themselves smiling at all the typical cat antics and "cat"-astrophies (sorry, I couldn't help myself). However, Amber finds herself putting her abilities to yet-untried purposes when her friend is found dead...and she is a prime suspect.

In addition to its charm and warmth, this book is also a page-turning mystery that kept my interest throughout. I just couldn't put it down. There are references, in this debut book in the series, to additional family members and a complicated family history. I look forward to future books in the series as Amber develops her abilities and unravels the mysteries of her past and present.

I really love witchy cozy mysteries! and I am so glad I got to read this one. It has everything I wanted, a witch who actually uses magic and makes potions, a murder mystery, and small town vibes. Amber was great, not overpowered and too confident in her powers where she over uses them, but not some shy kitty cat who has trouble sticking up for herself (some authors try to play this off as being polite but come on).

Of course, it was pretty obvious from the get go who the murderer was, even if they try to misdirect you from it. Although, the way it went about was something I did not guess which caught me a little off guard but that just made me like the book even more. It also left off on a little cliffhanger which does make me excited to read the next book, which I will be doing.

One thing I did notice was that there was a bit of an absence of romance. It looks like they are trying to set something up for Amber, a little sprinkling of romance but nothing that would get in the way. I do like romances in cozy mysteries but of course the mystery should come first, so I like that they set it up but didn't make it take center stage. I guess I should get ready for a slow burn if there is to be one (if there isn't that's completely fine with me!)

Just finished this and am looking forward to the sequel! Don't worry no spoilers! I loved the cutesy town with a bunch of things named cat-like themes and the small town feel where everyone practically knows each other. Throw in woman who is a witch, but in secret, and it takes on an added level of tension while she tries desperately to prove she isn't the murderer. I feel like this is a town and storyline I could read for a whole series of books!
