“As haunting as it is compelling.” —Pim Wiersinga, author of The Pavilion of Forgotten Concubines

About the Author

Melanie Cossey grew up in the burgeoning suburban neighborhoods of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where old-world history often collided with urban sprawl. If she wasn't climbing through abandoned houses, she was sneaking onto construction sites, imagining what came before or what was yet to come.Melanie has enjoyed a twenty-year freelance writing career crafting non-fiction articles for the web and magazines, but in recent years has changed her focus to creating poetry, short fiction and novels. Melanie's Gothic fiction The Nymphalidae won Honorable Mention in the Storm Crow Tavern's 2015 Tales from Beermat Micro Fiction Contest and her short story, The Choice Between Fire and Ice was shortlisted in the 2016 Surrey International Writer's Conference's Short Fiction Contest.Melanie is currently completing her second novel, Equanimity - Asylum for Women, a Female Gothic tale that exposes the Victorian practice of institutionalizing women who were conscious of their sexuality. She is also working on a flash fiction collection dealing with the transitory nature of life.

As a child, Melanie Cossey delighted in reading stories that left her feeling disturbed, like Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery, and Poe’s The Telltale Heart. Her love of the Victorian period combined with her penchant for impactful, unsettling stories nurtured her desire to create troubling tales of gothic horror.

Melanie’s short, The Nymphalidae won Honorable Mention in the Storm Crow Tavern’s 2015 Tales from Beermat Microfiction Contest. Her short fiction has been shortlisted in numerous contests. Melanie’s gothic horror, A Peculiar Curiosity, will be released on October 26th 2018 by Fitzroy Books. She is a member of the Horror Writer’s Association.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gothic Classic Novel of the Future
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 6, 2020
A gothic tale set on two time lines. The well-drawn and well researched novel is a cross between Mary Shelly novel Doctor Frankenstein’s monster and the Journals of Jonathan Harker. Cossey’s novel has two narrators. Anthropology professor Duncan Clarke who intercepts a box of macabre curiosities intended for his university and discovers a travel journal of Edward Walker dated 1865.
Edward Walker’s Journal takes both the reader and Duncan Clarke in to the dark world of Edward’s obsessed with specimen Z. Specimen Z is a 10 year old he brought back to England from the West Indies. The narration progresses through a series of eyewitness reports, diary entries and technical notes. A lot of research has gone into this book the get the feeling of the novel right. A classic gothic novel in the making. A novel well worth reading if you love anything Zombie/Zonbi.
