Peppermint Bark (The Dogmothers Book 9) Kindle Edition
Getting stood up for her high school prom turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to Colleen Kilcannon. That's when Joe Mahoney offered to fill in as her date, and magic happened. By the end of that night, Colleen was ready to give up her dreams of flying the friendly skies and seeing the world…because nothing in that world could compete with her firefighter. She and Joe married, had a family, and remained deeply in love until he died in the line of duty, leaving her a widow for twenty years.
Tim McIntosh has avoided Bitter Bark for forty-five years. But when the international business executive returns to his home town to fulfill his father’s dying wish, seeing Colleen again is inevitable. Determined to deliver a decades-old apology, he visits the dog treat store she runs, where a couple of sweet old ladies persuade him to participate in Peppermint Bark, a holiday dog fostering program. They even have the perfect dog for him to foster, an impish Westie named Bucky. There’s just one problem...someone else has already claimed that dog. Someone Tim remembers quite well.
As Colleen and Tim rekindle their friendship and co-foster a dog that seems to only be happy when they’re together, old sparks ignite. But they only have the month of December together before he returns to his life of world travel…and she returns to what suddenly seems like a mundane existence. Their relationship deepens while they set out on an impossible holiday mission to fulfill his father’s deathbed request, uncovering life-changing secrets. It’ll take one clever Westie, two scheming grannies, and a whole lot of Christmas magic for Colleen and Tim to finally get a second chance at a dance that just might last forever.

I have to say, Roxanne St. Claire exceeded any expectations that I even THOUGHT I had. What a treasure!
Peppermint Bark is truly sweet. So, so sweet and deliciously, unimaginably intimate. My heart is still tender from the love of mother to child, daughter to mother, first love and true love, coming full circle to first love.
From a braid that carries it's own history to a Westie that may well be the embodiment of an Irish Setter, to newly found family, you won't be able to put this book aside, except to grab a tissue.
When you reach the end you'll want to go back and read it again. I know that I did!
Peppermint Bark isn't a tear-jerker as much as it is a heart warmer. Don't rush. Savor. Every. Word.
The grannies are at it again. This time their sights are set on Colleen. It is time for her to start living her life and let go of the past. She has been a widow over 20 years and in all that time she has never dated once. Her youngest child, her daughter has worked with her for over a year to get in shape, change her comfy clothes to modern casual clothes, eat right and exercise. It has all paid off. The next big thing is getting rid of the braid that has been in her hair for decades. Elle talks her mother into getting her gray hair turned back to the original color, and then getting rid of that braid that ages her. The braid has a story of its own. Touching and emotional. Sweet and sad.
And then a handsome, sexy, silver fox shows up in town. Colleen doesn't recognize him but he knows her. The grannies have already spotted him and decide he would be great for Colleen. They just don't know that she already knows him and is delighted to see him again. He is in town on a very serious mission. Great secrets, some you never see coming. The story just gets better and better. What a great read. Each book in the series tops all the others. Great heroes, great family, great dogs, etc. It is a fun read and hugely entertaining. I HIGHLY recommend it and all Dogmother readers will be downloading like crazy. The cute little dog on the cover has a great part and you won't see that coming either. Great read.
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 11/16/2021.
Timothy (Tim) McIntosh returned to Bitter Bark to tie some loose ends and close the final chapter on his dad’s life. A fateful encounter with the Dogmothers brings these two rich, multi-dimensional characters together and with the not so subtly encouragement from a know it all pupper Tim and Colleen will re- encounter themselves and learn that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side and love doesn’t come with an expiration date.
A second chance romance between a dapper, well traveled silver fox and a powerful woman who just needed a push to reclaim her dreams and her self-worth will have you glued to your book/electronic devices until the end. As book number 9 in The Dogmother’s series you will have plenty of cameos, funny banter, secrets and history but above all you will find connections, a real romance with all the ups and downs; the wonder of youth and the wisdom that only come from maturity. It was sweet, sexy and proof that love do not care about age but only on what’s right and gives you all the feels. If you need a read to restore your faith in love (all kinds of love), the magic of the Holiday season and importance of our furry friends this is the book for you.
Roxanne St Claire, thanks for this gem. I always think that it is next to impossible to top the previous Dogmother’s book but somehow you cook the right recipe to do just that. Peppermint Bark can be read as a stand alone but it pays off having read all the previous book since we always get an update on our friends lives. Five shinning stars for a book that will stay with you forever.
