Everyone has something, someone, somewhere else that they’d rather be. For four high school seniors, their goals of perfection are just as different as the paths they take to get there.
Cara’s parents’ unrealistic expectations have already sent her twin brother Conner spiraling toward suicide. For her, perfect means rejecting their ideals to take a chance on a new kind of love. Kendra covets the perfect face and body—no matter what surgeries and drugs she needs to get there. To score his perfect home run—on the field and off—Sean will sacrifice more than he can ever win back. And Andre realizes that to follow his heart and achieve his perfect performance, he’ll be living a life his ancestors would never understand.
A riveting and startling companion to the bestselling Impulse, Ellen Hopkins’s Perfect exposes the harsh truths about what it takes to grow up and grow into our own skins, our own selves.

"Hopkins sticks to the signature style that has made her books bestsellers, blending verse poetry with controversial topics . . . to intrigue her fans and recruit new ones." ― Publishers Weekly
"This companion to Impulse can stand alone, but packs considerably more punch when read contiguously as intended. . . . Hopkins’s legions of fans will no doubt devour Perfect and welcome the return of the characters they learned to love in Impulse."
― School Library Journal
"Hopkins addresses teens’ struggle with unrealistic expectations in gut-wrenching free verse." ― Booklist
"At its nucleus, four teenagers are grappling with insecurities that become exacerbated when loved ones turn up the heat. . . . The unrestricted access Hopkins employs is formidable: parents, siblings, love interests, and outliers all thrust frank judgment on the characters. It is how Cara, Sean, Kendra, and Andre react that encourages readers’ emotional attachments. Her writing conveys teenage quandaries with all of the intended consequences, as the verse style only serves to shock as the events unfold." ― VOYA

If you have never heard of her books or read them they are written in verse but as you read it the verse gives more of the meaning behind the story. There are some you can also read vertically to sum up how the characters are feeling and how they are spaces can tell you what words are heavily emphasize. You would be surprised the reviews I have seen complaining about the book being "poetry". To me it is more like the lyrics of a song than actual poetry...minus the choruses of course.

This book takes place during the events of impulse (the 1st book in the duology) and is from Cara's POV (Connor's sister) & 3 of her "friends".
While Impulse concentrated on suicide & the meaning of life etc, Perfect is all about Perfection and what it is to achieve "perfect".
This book is so powerful! It deals with sexuality, substance abuse e.g. drugs & alcohol, body image, eating disorders, relationships, abuse, rape, parental & sibling relationships, death & bereavement, racism, sexism & so so so much more!
The characters are all so different, in various & numerous ways. All with their own strengths & flaws. Every character has so much backstory & complexity to why they are how they are!
The writing is beyond beautiful! The free verse style adds so much more emotion & subtext to every line, it's captivating!
This series has made realistic fiction one of my favourite genres!
I honestly love this duology so much!
I can't recommend it enough!
If you want something that'll really make you think & question, pick this series up!
I was thoroughly immersed and I'm kinda shook
At times it slugged.. But it quickly caught my attention again
Overall amazing and I
Ein weiterer Pluspunkt ist für mich das Cover, das mir ausnehmend gut gefällt.
Die Handlung läuft parallel zu "Impulse", welches ich zuerst gelesen habe, und ich würde es auch in der Reihenfolge empfehlen.
