Another PHENOMENAL read by the master wordsmith, hardcore researcher, scientist-at-heart of all disciplines - author Bobby Akart!
I believe the Perfect Storm series is my favorite of all his work.
Wait. They all, each of his series, have been my favorite as I’ve read them! lol
It really is impossible to choose. Each is unique regarding the cause of the apocalyptic event. Each is incredibly well-written. It would be akin to saying you have a favorite child as a mother/parent.
Not possible.
So, here again, in Perfect Storm - we find the perfect collection of ingredients for an, “up all night read.” (Which I did just last night to complete this book in one fell swish.)
Akart immediately sets the stage in the first couple of chapters with the hook. Which is so intriguing you cannot help but be drawn right into the tale & character’s lives.
The world building is solid, rich, & brilliant.
The character development is emotionally engaging, chock full of backstory, & offers some tension as well.
The above “basics” are not at all surprising as Akart is a pro. So utterly skilled in his craft. Absolutely one of the Top 5 modern apocalyptic writers we enjoy today. Likely ranks even in the Top 3.
The CME subject for this story has been covered, without question, about a zillion times in about a trillion books in the dystopian genre. It’s been around the apocalyptic block more than Akart himself!
What sets Perfect Storm head & shoulders (ok, a whole entire torso as well…) apart from 98% of all the other tired old plots out there is this author’s trademark PASSION.
What most of us who love his books, love him for the most.
The very real science built into the story.
The months (years…) of research Akart has devoted to the subject of the Sun, CME’s, preparation/survival specifically related to CME’s, space in general, who & what the professional organizations are here on Earth which most closely align with this subject on macro & micro levels, as well as the psychology of it all (people’s tendencies/reactions/actions related to unforeseen “positive” & “negative” occurrences).
In addition to Akart’s solo type research, the cross-section of varied specialists he works with is extremely impressive. Specialists (scientists, doctors/PhD’s, technicians, etc, etc) who donate their considerable knowledge & time to this author’s efforts.
The “actual facts” woven so creatively throughout this story, in conjunction with the uptempo pacing, offers the reader a true sense of authenticity.
And it’s not just, “the science stuff” this author has researched & included for our pleasure.
Book 1 also contains a great tour through some of the best spots found in NYC. Especially museums. The artwork, by present & painters of the past, is described in detail. (There are actually photographs of more than a few canvases in this book for reference!)
And by way of museum docent, the history of pertinent painters & their work is offered.
It’s awesome! (And not one bit dry, textbook-y, history class-like, nor boring! ;)
The entire storyline of Book 1 is an enthralling page turner. In fact, when I reached the last page I was kind of shocked back to reality, I had been so engrossed!
And I have to thank Mr. Akart as well. Due to all of his research, on many different world-ending subjects for every one of his wonderfully thrilling & terrifying series & books, I’m sure he’s spent some anxious personal times.
Daydreaming. Nights where he can’t sleep, or even having a nightmare or two. Sudden thoughts or worries for loved ones which have stopped him cold.
No matter how prepared he is, or how many steps anyone takes to ensure a measure of safety for themselves & their loved ones should an emergency occur - living & breathing the facts/scientific reality of worldwide, “extinction level events,” day in & out must creep up on one occasionally.
Thus, I THANK YOU, Mr. Akart. For - taking a big one for The Team! So that all of us get the joy (& chills, laughter, & learning opportunities) that come from experiencing your work.
It truly is in a class by itself.
Ok! All that said….
On to Book 2 in the Perfect Storm series. I can’t wait to find out what happens next, from where Book 1 left off.
And what new adventure(S!) await our discovery!…

There’s odd (super annoying) trend recently, in the apocalyptic genre. Every series I’ve read that’s been published in the past year or so, ALWAYS has a character- or MANY in same book- whose entire personality is comprised of, “it’s all my fault; everryyything that happens anywhere, any time, to anything or any one- it’s all MY fault.” And this line or version of it, they lament internally & externally from cover to cover, from beginning of series till the bitter end.
It’s horrible, “poor me,” trend. (And boring.)
I don’t know where it began, but fingers crossed authors let it die off (ASAP!!) much sooner than later.
So- TY! Not that I thought AKART would EVER write to satisfy trend… ;)
