3.0 out of 5 stars For Real?
By Vincent on March 6, 2021
Digital version is 12.0 GB (excluding patches, DLC)

First some housekeeping:

PS4/5 vs Switch:

If you plan to get p5 strikers (console gamers) best to buy ps4 version

Graphic and load times are way better on ps4/5

Graphics are more muddled especially in the shadows. Lighting is also an issue as in some dark areas it's hard to make out what's going on

Load times tested
Ps5 2 sec
Ps4 6secs
Switch up to 24secs
PC varies by build

Only reason to get Switch version is for portability or don't own other systems.
If you have play history of Super Smash Bros Ultimate Joker DLC you get bonus Persona 5 sound set
Conversely you get Sophia spirit in Smash Ultimate

Now onto the review:

Basically Persona x Dynasty Warriors. Nice mix of the two, but at a much smaller scale

Takes place 4 months after ending of Persona 5 base game during summer break (ignoring P5 Royal extra semester). Find out that the metaverse events are still happening, and you solve the mystery as to why; while going on a summer road trip.

If you haven't played Persona 5 or Persona 5 Royal, it can be a lot to take in as you're bombarded with the entire cast of phantom thieves without explanation of backstory. Can still be followed as a standalone story, but some references in dialogue may go over your head

Game is very cutscene heavy

Story has similar style and art aesthetic to Persona 5, and is really good

There are no social link in the game, so cannot become bff or romance anyone.

--Gameplay loop:
Story shows current scenario
Go into city and investigate by talking to every NPC
Enter dungeon (Jail) defeat enemy

There are no time constants like in the original game, and you can beat the game at your own pace.

Instead of social links there's a bond (with entire group) system where you gain points where you can spend of perks

There's a cooking system where you combine ingredients to make consumable items

No more negotiating with Persona in order to obtain them, instead they're rewards for winning battles.

No longer able to sacrifice persona to transfer skills, instead there's only a fusion system

There are also far less persona in the game compared to Persona 5

Similar to Dynasty Warriors game, but less open world

Battles in a concentrated area, and once you defeat hundred of enemies on screen; it open up new area
You have your standard physical attacks, but able to select Persona via special AOE attacks by pressing a button to slow down time.

In order to use specials, you have to use SP which are limited (especially in long dungeons). Most of the time it feels like spamming attacks on attack sponge enemies which makes combat really repetitive and unnecessary.

Enemies have health and armor bar, where armor needs to be depleted by attacking with super effective moves to lower major health bar from enemy. Once armor breaks (stagger), enemies gets stunned and you can use an all-out-attack

As you do battle, you can build up your Show Time meter to do Show Time Attack

Defensive options are limited. Basically need to dodge or dash away. No block or parry option

Team AI are not that smart. Most of the time they just stand around and do minimal damage. If you go into a match where they have weakness to enemies attack, they're pretty much useless.

You can switch and play different party members on the fly, but most of the time I just stuck with Joker since he has a larger move set. Exception when boss enemy is has weakness to party member moves and can build up meter faster, or when party member have their show time meter filled.

There are environmental objects around stages you can interact with. Problem is there are buttons mapped to multiple functions, and you can interact with an object instead of using the move you want.

When it works and you get used to everything; the faster paced battle system can be really fun

Music is great in this game as with the original

There are returning ones, new original music for this game, and some remixes

Some recorded character dialogue is really low for some reason when conversing with each other . hope it gets patched

Overall; gameplay can be repetitive, but the story is very engaging (if you like the original or PS5 Royal). For newcomers to the series, best to play the Persona 5 Royal first (or Persona 5) so you don't' get lost in the story.
