Adorable box with adorable books. Wonderful illustrations. I bought these classics for my granddaughter...BUT after reading them again (before I gave them to her) I was horrified by how dark the stories are!! Old school fairy tales and children's books are really frightening. Kids now have such a wealth of great books that are fun, uplifting, expansive. I returned these classics because the stories would scare a little kid. Too bad because the illustrations are so lovely. The stories need to be rewritten to appeal to 21st Century kids.
This set is well put together and very cute. I bought it for my son because I remember having them as a child. However, I do not remember the book with the cats being slightly inappropriate. There is a page in the book where it says the mom cat smacked her kittens. This might not offend some, but I don’t want to read a book to my child that talks about smacking someone even if it was written a long time ago. I will keep the other books, but will be discarding that one.
I'm disappointed with the minuscule size of these books. I've considered other books, including Winnie the Pooh, and nowhere is there any reference to the dimensions. Why is that? I would have looked further for a little larger version had I been warned. The other problem is the phrase "naturally better". I have no idea what that means. Is this some modern editor's version of the stories? I have not unwrapped the books, so I am considering returning them. I could live with the size of the books, but not a "cleaned up" version of Beatrix Potter's own words.
The quality of the books are great, the artwork beautiful, the stories...odd. Thought these classics would be good additions to our kids’ library. We’re fans of Peter Rabbit, which is what inspired the purchase but the other stories are strange.
