This book, and I assume the rest in the series, glorifies the corporal punishment as well as romanticizing it. The author characterizes the brutality as a sign of the husband’s/step-father’s affections. The wife accepts it as being warranted by her behavior, allowing her husband to revel in her submissive personality and to congratulate himself and his corporate punishments as having succeeded. Worse yet, despite regular assertions that the “spankings” are neither “beatings” nor sexually motivated, the last incident involves a birch cane, and what is described as an unwanted anal assault by the husband. If that isn’t ugly enough, he refuses to satisfy her sexually as part of the punishment. Nauseating at best.
The step-daughter is never entirely cowed in this book. I assume that she will submit to her husband’s demands in the next book in the series. Unfortunately, I’ll never find out, having had enough ugliness for my entire life from this book.
I liked both the H and the h. The development and growth of both characters is both believable and well written. The only character you loved to hate was the h's stepdaughter (who became her new hubby's ward). You couldn't wait to see her get her comeuppance and she does, twice. But by the end of the story you learn some things and actually start to feel sorry for her. I'm actually looking forward to her story which is next.
Sexual Orientation: M/F
HEA or Chain: This is book 2 in the series but each book can be read as a standalone.
Dark / BDSM / Non-con / DD: Just a spanking fetish book
Hero: Not so much a hero in this book rather just a man who married a woman because he liked that she was submissive and he likes to spank people.
Heroine: Nothing really spectacular about her, just like with the hero it’s just a woman who marries a man who learns she likes being spanked.
Best part of the book: The writing was good, it flowed and didn’t have any recognizable errors.
Worst part of the book: The story seemed pretty bland, not very exciting but good for background noise.

Golden Angel is a fabulous author who grabs you into a story, has you wanting to scream at the characters and hug them in equal measure, well almost always.
Philip's Rules is an Historical Erotic/BDSM Novel, it is the story of how a Marquis who needs to wed to continue his family line, finds and weds a very young and innocent widow and their journey to a loving marriage with a wicked step-daughter thrown in for good measure.
Philip is a stern man, Cordelia an over accommodating widow and Gabrielle is the over indulged and spoilt orphan/step-daughter.
The story starts with the wedding and follows them all settling in to their new roles, Philip as a new husband, sort of stepfather/guardian, Cordelia as a new Wife & Marquess, and Gabrielle to being the ward of a Marquis who will not indulge her the way her late and neglectful father did. It's not a easy transition for any of them and Philip makes it clear that he wants a disciplined household and he isn't afraid to dish out punishment if needed and he does.
I love that Philip however doesn't get everything his own way and finds himself worried that he will always come second best to Gabrielle where Cordelia is concerned and that Cordelia realises she's actually stronger than she ever thought she could be.
Cordelia wants a love match and soon falls for Philip, but her step-daughter is causing problems and this only adds to her insecurities.
Passionate, naughty and at times emotionally frustrating, this story is good enough to make me buy the sequel despite some misgivings I have about the historical accuracy of some aspects.
