Gr 4–7—In this retelling of the medieval German folktale, the hubris-filled residents of Hamelin are overrun by a polygamous, narco-egalitarian, rat collective of the worst order. Only "gammy-legged" Sam and his mother possess any measure of humility and kindness (for which they are later rewarded). As in the original, the citizens agree to pay the curious, almost otherworldly piper if he can remove the rats. When they later renege on their promise, the piper removes the children of Hamelin as well. As the musing, interrupting narrator, Brand quietly and thoughtfully delivers asides and astute observations as to the character of Hamelin's citizens, who include Fat Dave and Sexist Bob. As the piper, Brand's voice has an almost mesmerizing quality, like the legendary piper's music, lulling the listener into a contemplative state. Sadly, occasionally brilliant phrasing and subtle commentary are sandwiched between overly exuberant character voices and crass jokes. One can write a children's book with wryly amusing social commentary; one can write a children's book replete with poop and fart jokes. It is nearly impossible to balance the two. VERDICT It will be difficult for this book to find an audience outside Brand's existing fan base. Too bad. Told in the Brand's vernacular, it is a delight to read. We particularly enjoyed his verbal assaults on the popular jerks in favor of those that got bullied. Its an old tale with a modern East London or is it cockney, accent? ("bosh'em over the noggin!" ) The art work is fantastic, really beautiful work.

I am a big Russell Brand fan and found this book pretty gross with all the references to boogers and poop, but hey, kids love that, right? And after all, it's Russell Brand -- what did I expect? I also thought this story was downright hilarious in places. I was a bit worried to give it to my good friend's kids for Christmas because I thought the parents might object to all the scatalogical humor, but instead the family objected to the presence of gay rats in the story -- go figure. I wouldn't buy this again for conservative friends, but for anyone else, it's harmless, has great illustrations, and is clearly a morality tale (although I found the meaning to be pretty enigmatic -- probably that was Brand's intention). Adult fans would be better off watching Ponderland, however, if they want more of a laugh.

As a middle aged adult, I really enjoyed this book. It conveys a deeper meaning to the tale without spelling it out too explicitly, but which tacitly weaves through the narrative style itself, like a pied piper trail. On the other hand there is a glossary in the back which is more explicit for some expressions which are used, but within the down to earth colloquial type language framework that most kids will know. In addition to this there are explanations of certain words like 'sexism' and so on which is useful. In all it's a good read for most young kids.
