That's why I decided to explore a bit and see if there are any other brands that might also meet my simple needs. My pens need to be black, indelible, reliable, fine tipped and write smoothly. The Zebras have been my go-to as they meet all of these requirements. But after seeing the stellar reviews on this Pilot Precise V5 RT, I decided I would give them a shot.
I got a 3 pack for $5.69 which is a good price considering I payed $8.29 for the 2 pack of Zebra F-402 pens. But, as soon as I took it out of the package, it felt way too light which I knew would make adjusting to it a challenge. The Zebra is beefy with a metal housing and weighs in at a hefty 18.49 grams (yes, I weighed them on a field standard scale). The Pilot weighed in at barely more than half that weight at 10.75 grams. But it is a nearly all plastic design so that's to be expected. They did have almost the same girth and length of the Zebra pens so they did have a decent feel in the hand. They also had a nice rubber grip like the Zebras.
Next up is the most important part of the test which is, of course, the writing. I wouldn't say it was awful but there was noticeably more resistance with the Pilot. Additionally, if you wrote more slowly, you could really notice how much the pen bleeds. If you have a brain fart and pause for a moment with your pen still on the paper, it will bleed even more and go right through the paper. Also, although they are advertised as a extra fine point (0.5 mm), they appeared to be identical in width (on paper) to the Zebra which is advertised as only a fine point (0.7 mm). The bleeding I experienced when writing slower caused that width to be clearly wider than that of the Zebra. Since I sometimes need to document in small fields on forms and whatnot, this won't work for me.
The worst part is that these are not indelible AT ALL. I wrote with each pen and did a dry smudge test followed by a wet smudge test. The dry smudge test caused the ink from the Pilot to smear considerably while the ink from the Zebra was unscathed. The wet smudge test really sealed the fate of the Pilot as the ink was completely smeared way past what anyone would consider acceptable and definitely not acceptable for my regulated line of work. Having used the Zebra for many years, I wasn't surprised at all when it didn't smudge except a very, very slight hazing around the words, barely noticeable.
In summary, if you want a cheap pen for taking quick notes on sticky pads and stuff like that, the Pilot is a decent pen at a reasonable price. Otherwise, I would steer clear of these. I'll gladly pay the higher price for the Zebra pens, myself.
Could it be improved? Sure. When writing with this I tend to get "ghost" lines between my letters and generally not write quite as precisely (despite the name) as I'd like. It's featherlight and a I think a touch more weight would keep it more stable in the hand and improve the writing experience. I would also prefer an even finer point tip for writing small. Although the ink is good I prefer the Pigma ink in Micron pens. Microns also go several sizes smaller (down to .20mm), however, I find that they have a bit more resistance than the Pilot, which makes them less comfortable to write with, and they also have the dreaded cap.
If anyone can recommend any other pens to try, please let me know!
Pilot's designers figured out how to make a clickable pen easy to hold, and easier to write with. Thin, dark lines. I actually improved my handwriting---I write cursive because that's what they taught in school 50 years ago.
When it was time to get a new pen, I went to Amazon and ordered the clickable Pilot Precise Vt RT. It costs less than my Pilot Precise Extra Fine non-clickable. Same black ink, same thin lines but better handling. Try it out.
The Pilot Precise V5 RT demonstrates durability as well pinpoint precision with its 0.5 mm tip. This tip and the ink in this pen allowed for lines that were smooth and graphic as can be. Additionally, something I definitely found important is the comfort of the pen, which allowed me to write for longer periods of time without my fingers aching. As a college student, this pen came in handy for me to write out detailed and clean notes over a longer duration. I have to say that these pens are quite possibly one of the best I have ever used if not the best and for the price they are right now, I would definitely recommend purchasing these pens.
