It was a great story, very funny, , jkhgl and once again transported me to the Lowcountry of South Carolina, a place I truly love. As a SoCal born and raised gal, I was lucky to have lived at ages 10-11 in Jacksonville, FL. My parents gifted my brother and me with many trips up and down the Southern & Florida Coastlines. California may have the best weather but the South has Fluff Mud, Edisto, Savannah, Charleston, Shem Creek, the Golden Coast Islands, the best seafood, the glorious Shrimp boats, those accents, yes ma'am...glorious marshes, sunsets, rich traditions of dress, manners, the military, antiques, and honored places. Plantation has it all. DBF brings all of those things to life in her books and transported me once again back to my childhood adventures. I think Dot and I were twin sisters split to live one on each coast, destined to have almost identical experiences. She was an exceptional storyteller and a beautiful lady. Thank you for sharing your Southern heart and soul with millions of readers, DBF.
We are grieving the loss of your wisdom, whims, and wit! I can't imagine the joy of sitting at God's table with Pat Conroy, Anne Rivers Siddons and others who gifted us with what only a Southern-bred humorist could. You all left us too soon.
May you Rest In Peace knowing the joy you brought to your readers.
I love how Frank weaves a tale and grabs the reader immediately.
I have downloaded a few other of her books, and will read them, too -- in addition to reading the other Lowcountry tales at some point. Of course, I probably won't remember the detail of each book and each character, but my overall impression is that while I am reading I am very entertained and eager to know what is next. That is, after all, why we spend time reading, isn't it? A very good author, truly! (The first book I ready by her is really my least favorite thus far -- "The Last Original Wife.")
Definitely recommend Dorothea Benton Frank for contemporary fiction ... although she says she bases her books on her background. What a pro!

She writes with humor and insight about families, landscapes, voodoo, and food... and you are transported to a palce with a very special charm.
This is a wonderful read and I reccomend it to anybody who enjoys Isabel Allende's stories.
