What, another generation? Count me in! Then a third. Ah, alright. Fourth. What? Fifth. Oh, no I can't... what? Yeah, I have terrible memory and could barely memorize past the third gen release of characters. I could barely get by in the Nintendo DS games. Eventually I give in and check out how many Pokémon there are total, not including the Mega versions. Oh, man. I can't check each individual one on Bulbapedia.
Fortunately this miracle hit the shelves and was my go-to for a quick briefing and then some. My only complaint is there isn't a clear way the characters are sorted such as alphabetical or by type (grass, water, fire, psychic, etc.). It's very useful the evolved stages are illustrated under applicable Pokémon or a simple "Does not evolve". The most useful thing is how to sound out the names since some might be a little tricky (hard or soft vowels).
The fact that he still reads it is important. Our library has an extensive pokemon handbook and all around reference type collection. (Staying in stock is a huge problem so we're still always seeing something old but new to us) After checking one out he doesn't usually ask to buy, renew it or check it out again later and if he sees something new he will flip quickly through to see if there is anything new. He always falls back to this one. So it must be good.
He doesn't watch the tv show or movies or read the comic books. He reads the old pikachu early readers and has pokemon Omega on the DS. So that's his extent of the pokeverse for him this book is great. Since each newer book edition just adds on the new pokemon plus the 700+ old ones. Your kid will notice that none/majority of the main/new featured pokemon on tv/game are in this book. If they are playing newer games or watching the show. The book is great but for kids heavily in the pokeverse make sure you get the newet edition. It makes a huge difference.
However, when he wants to learn more about a new Pokémon he heard about on the show, it means a painstakingly long search of the ENTIRE book, flipping one page at a time to find the said Pokémon. The book desperately needs an appendix or an index listing of the Pokémons and the page numbers they can be found on... I simply can't believe that no ones thought of such a simple solution to make this book more user friendly.
First copy was a Christmas present for my 7yo who was just learning about Pokemon. It quickly turned into a security blanket that went everywhere with him. He's read it cover-to-cover a few times, and constantly browses through his favorites or monsters he sees on the cartoons. I'm almost concerned with how much of the book he has memorized!
He also chose this as a birthday present for his best friend who's into books and Pokemon too, and it was a big hit. If you're shopping for someone who like the cards, video games, cartoons or whatever, this book is a safe bet and probably a home run.
This is not going to win any children's literature awards, but for our family, it's a hit.
Top international reviews
I was looking for something relatively around the £5 mark to reward my son for a particularly difficult tooth pulling which caused hysterics. Needing something quick to quiet him, we sat and he chose this book. The reviews were terrific, indeed solid five stars so I got this to reward his extraordinary bravery :D
This book is fantastic value, a very good size and filled with sumptuous illustrations full of all the Pokemon characters and their statistics. My son takes it absolutely everywhere like a little briefcase. In the car, to bed to read before sleeping, with his friends. He is nine and not a huge Pokemon fan but definitely getting there. I can't believe how much you get for your money, it is about the thickness of a big annual but with zero boring filler content and my son just adores it.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this product for kids and anyone really who loves Pokemon, apparently there are shops in town selling this over ten pounds so a really great bargain. I wrote this review myself, was not asked to write one and would definitely recommend the seller I bought from. The item was here very quickly.
For a fiver, it is 'Essential' for any Pokemon fan, young or old- you really can't go wrong!
Arrived well packaged via prime delivery.
Ordered for my Pokemon obsessed son!
He described this book as "totally awesome" and "Just what he needed"
This is great for my son, who is not keen on sitting and reading story books, however he has spent hours sat reading about all the different Pokemon.
Fun to learn about the evolutions and variations and names!
Good for anyone starting the pokemon craze!
A great stocking filler.
