The reader will be able to tell that Patterson did the lion's share of the writing, as it is a well written and entertaining story. There are still several Clintonian elements where the president is made to look like a real hero.

In spite of that, it is a good read.

I loved the hero David Stahl . It was refreshing to see an honorable man , Matt Keating getting the respect he deserved. Both of the men he'll bent on revenge for this American former President... Lets just say I think Karma and great intelligence did a great Job!!

Dramatic and compelling, a solid thriller told from several perspectives

The President's Daughter is a compelling, action-packed thriller from James Patterson and former President Bill Clinton. Here are my thoughts immediately after reading, with no spoilers:

The book is divided into five parts and an epilogue, with a total of 136 chapters, and just under 600 pages of story. As you can imagine with that many chapters, each one is pretty short, at just a few pages. The setting or perspective often changes with a new chapter, so the story is slowly built up from different angles.

The book starts out right away with descriptions of some brutal and dramatic events in the first chapter. The extreme nature of the antagonist is established, and some gruesome details are used to really portray him as a terrible enemy.

Starting with Chapter 4 we get some chapters that are written in the first person from our protagonist President Matt Keating's perspective. There are a few details that I noticed right away that showed the possible influences of President Clinton on the story; including that President Keating's daughter attending Sidwell Friends School, the same school that President Clinton's daughter Chelsea actually attended when he was in office. The first person perspective of these chapters serves to really put the reader in President Keating's shoes, and made it easier to feel invested in the story. Part One does a good job of setting up the characters, as you also see the early tension between Keating and his successor, the new President Pamela Barnes, who had been previously been his Vice President.

In Part Two the pace seemed to slow down a bit, even though this is where the former President’s daughter Mel is actually kidnapped. There are many chapters from her perspective, so her character's competent but frightened nature is well established. You get to see the situation from several different character's perspectives as the chapters switch back and forth, and the scope of the situation is fleshed out.

The pace picks back up toward the end of the second part, and there is a ton of action and compelling scenes that made it hard to put the book down. I felt like the main characters were given just enough background and detail for the interactions to seem realistic, even with this plot that might initially seem somewhat unlikely. The authors really create an environment that sets up clear heroes and villains, and makes it easy to root for the protagonist.

Overall I enjoyed this book. Even though it was pretty long at 600 pages, the shorter chapters and the constant switching of perspectives prevented it from ever getting too boring or tedious. It might not have been the most amazing or mind-blowing story I've ever read, but anything that can keep me interested for that long and come to a satisfying conclusion is a pretty good book in my opinion. 4.5/5

I was looking for an author I used to love and mistook Patterson for Sidney Sheldon. I've now read a couple of Patterson's books and while they're okay, they are not Sidney Sheldon. Same genre, but less flair, depth, suprises. That said, this isn't a terrible book. It's just forgettable. Patterson writes to entertain, not to make a person ponder in the least. Great airport reading, but I'm guessing this author is so successful because he truly is a workhorse - he puts out so many books! One might argue we should be honoring authors who delve deeper, but I'm sure there are plenty of those also. Just my two cents. Give me Fredrick Backman any day...

I liked this better than their first joint book. If I recall, book one had a long descriptive piece, almost a speech. This had action from the beginning. It's clear that Patterson has the skill in writing whilst Clinton has knowledge of the Presidency, White House and Secret Service. After these two successes, I am not sure where the pair goes from here. Nevertheless, two decent novels.

What a beauty this is, as it brings together a perfect pairing for this type of thriller. The story centres around former US President and ex-Navy Seal Matt Keating. A powerful man is hell-bent on payback from a time that Matt was in office. Matt still has the privilege of 24-hour protection. His daughter, after becoming an adult does not. Not that Mel ever wanted protection in the first place.

Mel is a fabulous character who wants to lead her own life out of the limelight of the press. Unfortunately, this has made her an easy target for someone seeking revenge against her dad. Mel had played out in her mind many scenarios, but not the one she was now in. Within minutes she knows just how deadly her abductors were.

With Matt’s successor as President making the whole thing a publicity boost for her popularity ratings, rather than getting his daughter back, it isn’t long before Matt is calling in old favours from his time as President and a former Navy seal. It is to become an elite unit of experience, tac-ticks and adrenaline. Mind games twist the story, with emotions that hit rock bottom and highs that give you that punch in the air feeling.

The insight into the workings of politics has a natural feel to it as Bill Clinton’s experience gives the story authenticity and James Patterson nose for a gripping plot, perfection. There isn’t a dull moment with characters that didn’t need to grow on me, it was instant. I enjoyed the side-line stories that linked the characters, with double-crosses, slights of hand and at times shocking and brutal vengeance. A brilliant Book.

I absolutely loved this book. A huge improvement on the first. The storyline is gripping and the reader is taken on a rollercoaster ride through the machinations of US politics. Matt Keating is enjoying his time as an ex-President after just 1 term in office, his wife is happy with her career which she has been able to resume following Matt leaving the White House. Their daughter Mel is enjoying her life too, she is at college and has a great boyfriend. Mel is targetted by terrorists who hold a huge grudge against her Dad and have obviously planned this kidnap for years. Now, with no secret-service protection, she is an easy target.

The present incumbant of the White House is too busy concentrating on her own popularity to help. Yes, she says all the right things, but she seems hell-bent on putting obstacles in place to getting Mel back.

The reader is treated to a rip-roaring story with many twists and turns along the road, there are many other characters along for the ride who all contribute to a great read. I loved the epilogue - it is great to have these, many books finish far to abruptly and you are left thinking "what happened to the final chapter?"

I don't want to give away too many spoilers, you need to read it for yourself, but trust me, you won't be disappointed.
