This story really dragged on and on! The H and h meet by chance, the h had just caught her live-in boyfriend (also her boss) cheating and ran out of their house with no phone, purse or anything else. She has no place to stay the H has her move in to his house and hires her as his office manager. This plan is only for a month when he will be deployed. They pretty quickly start having sex, but H tells her it won't go anywhere. The H doesn't share much personally. She gets upset when she is opening his mail and he has 3 large checks, this constitutes a major fight because H didn't share with her that he made a lot of money for an invention! At more than half way through the story she goes into a room in the basement he has locked up, now he is deployed at this time, and finds out he was married and expecting a baby when his wife died in a car accident! Not one person she has been interacting with, his family, his friends, or the H, himself, thought to tell her! She wasn't upset by that but was upset about the money?? Seriously, I do many things just didn't work for me. The fact that she just caught her live in bf cheating and is immediately ready to jump into bed with a man she just met! It just didn't feel true to me!

Wish I could give more than five stars, because I sure would. Harper just caught her boyfriend/boss banging another girl. She grabs her keys and takes off, now she wishes she had at least thought to bring money for gas. She is headed to her friends house, but she can't be sure exactly how to get there and she left her phone behind. She realizes she isn't going to make it any further as she pulls into the parking lot of what appears to be a bar. When she sees a guy roughing up a girl, she doesn't think she just acts. Launching herself on the man's back, fighting him to get him away from the girl. Coming to she sees the most handsome man, she must be dead. Luke couldn't believe his eyes as this small woman throws herself into a fight with someone twice her size. He helps her into the bar. His sister is working and she feeds the poor girl, learning that Harper was going the wrong direction to her friends house and is now stuck here with no money and no place to go. Luke agrees to let her stay at his place for the night, but that's it. He doesn't do relationships. He had lost a love once and he isn't putting himself out there for that every again. His sister has another idea, one that will make his parents back off. Harper will move in and be his pretend girlfriend for one month. Then when he deploys again, she will go on with her life as they have a pretend breakup. Things never go according to plan though. Even though he ensures Harper that he can never love her he does grow feelings for her. She has fallen in love even knowing he can't live get back. When it's time for him to leave, for them to part ways as planned Harper is devastated. Then she gets a text, it's just one word...stay. For the next six months the two talk as much as they can. When the man she fought in the parking lot of the bar is released from jail she is having a girls night with her friends. She gets word he might come looking for his ex, who is there with Harper. They rush to make sure all the Windows and doors are locked. The dog growls, it's dark out, she flips on the outside light and there he is glaring at her. She screams for the others to ruin next door as he busts in the window charging at Harper. Luke is distraught that he wasn't there to protect her even though she ensures him she is ok. One of the girls knocked him out before he could really hurt her and Luke's cop brother in law and his best friend bust in the front door as the girls tie him up. Harper finds out about Luke's past, his wife Amanda, how she was pregnant and she died. She even meet his mother in law who blamed Luke and thinks he had forgotten Amanda and is now replacing her. Luke surprises Harper by coming home early, but he is the one surprised when his mother in law is at the dinner when they arrive. When Harper invites everyone to his place for thanksgiving including his mother in law, Luke is beyond mad. Harper received a letter from someone in her past, someone she put behind bars that is fixing to get released and come for her. When she tries to tell Luke after everyone has left, he stops her and breaks up with her for over taking his life, for mixing his past and present, for making him feel guilty towards his dead wife. She leaves, he can't find where she went, she isn't taking his calls, she called in to work. When she does come in, it's after he's gone, she sends in her notice. He didn't know it would be this hard. When he finds mail that's for Harper and opens it to learn she may be in trouble, he is determined to save her. He can't be at fault for losing two women. Well he be able to save her and get her back? This book was so freaking awesome. I loved it so much. Definitely look forward to more from Lucy.

No cliffhanger
Standalone
Told from both POVs
No major editing issues
I want to start by saying this book is over 450 pages but you would never know it. I didn't once wonder when it would end or feel like it was dragging and I think that says something about not only this story but this author. This is my first time reading a book by her but I will definitely be on the lookout moving forward. I know there are a lot of pretend relationship books out there but I can promise you this isn't like one you have ever read before.
Both characters have secrets. Both are running from their pasts in one way or another. The question is what will they do when all their secrets are laid bare?
Harper is tired of crappy men. Fresh off finding her boyfriend cheating on her she sees a guy put his hands on a woman and loses her mind. With no thought for her own safety she charges him and gets herself punched in the face.
Luke is a loner. He chose that life after all his experience losing the people he loves. One month from yet another deployment he isn't looking for any complications to his perfectly lonely life. Especially when he watches that complication get sucker punched before he can get to her.
I don't want to give any of the surprises away but what I will say is this book made me laugh, cry, hold my breath and cross my fingers. And I loved every single page of it. Can't wait to read more from this author.

This is the story of Harper and Luke. These are well round characters with chemistry that oozes of the page as you read. Although the other characters that are secondary to the main two are again well written and add another delicious layer to what has turned out to be a wonderful discovery.
Harper has just ran from a horrible situation, she's left everything including her money ane jumped in her car. Trying to get to her best friend in an other city. On the way she gets lost and finds herself in a little town. She has no money, her phones dead and her car has ground to a holt......
Luke is an army reservist and is getting ready to deploy, he's world and woman wherry. Leaving his sisters bar he comes across a little thing trying to intervene in a domestic assault, from there things get complicated for both
Luke and Harper as they try and navigate a pretend relationship and all the hilarious and at times sad consequences that come from athat one little or big lie depending on your point of view.
This is so well written , the characters come to life as you read, this is a brilliant fine . I'm looking forward to easing more by this author

An absolute gem of a book

Lucy Score has written the best book I've read in ages. This from a woman who averages 2 books per day! I love, love, love the way she writes. The heroine of the story is perfect in her imperfections. She is the sort of girl you can imagine being real life friends with. It is very rare for me to love the heroine of the story more than the hero. This is an author I could easily begin to worship as long as she keeps writing her women as beautifully as she did Harper. Highly recommended 😘

Great, but some low points

One of the rare book I've read on Ku and then, bought. It's really good. But I had to rate it a 4/5 as the good passages are REALLY good, but others are on the unrealistic side. I don't like that the female character is weak and on the needy side of the scale. It's ok, you can be Horrible to me, I'll just wait for you to want to give me some scraps from your table isn't a policy I ever tolerate; however this romance was delightful despite that.
