A very enjoyable film

A movie with two great stars and a fantastic array huge stars as their supporting cast (including, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, Betty White,
Denis O'Hare, Oscar Nuñez, Malin Åkerman, and Michael Nouri, among others). A familiar plot line, a young woman (Bullock) who is about to be deported, enlists her assistant (Reynolds) to marry her her. Reynolds character was to go on a family visit to his hometown of Sitka, Alaska, so Bullock tags along. In the process, the two become more familiar with each other and hi-jinks ensue! The film received mixed reviews from critics, but praised the chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds. The film was a box office success, grossing over $317 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing romantic comedy film of 2009. Who listens to critics anyway, right!?! A very enjoyable film.

WARNING! Great movie BUT...

I love this movie. When I first searched for it on blu ray, all that came up was the foreign copies, I'm in USA, and the UK version claiming it's region free. So I decided to order that, as I've had luck before.

The region free claim is FALSE! It is recognized in a US region player, but will NOT play the movie itself. You will get a wrong region error message when trying to play it.

That said, I ordered a used \good condition copy cheap, just to own the movie. My search continues for an actual new condition, bluray, of this movie. For some reason, this movie is hard to find in new condition, and Amazon search is so messed up, you can't tell half the time what's what. I look for blu ray and it pops up, cool... Only the pictures showing are for DVD. So am I on the blu ray page or is it really DVD? HOLY SCHNITZEL!!!!

Overall the actual movie is great, in my opinion, if you can find the copy you're looking for. I love Sandra Bullock in most of her movies. I also enjoy Ryan Reynolds movies. Together, in this movie, they succeeded in making a comedic romp that circles around and tugs at your heart at the end. Very entertaining to me and a lighthearted break from all the action flicks I usually watch.

Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) works for a tyrant. Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) is a no-nonsense publishing editor who isn’t afraid to encourage shy authors to do Oprah and fire the people too afraid to approach said authors. She knows Andrew has editorial potential and talent as a writer (he submitted a manuscript), but she’d rather have him as her assistant. But then the unexpected happens: her Visa expired and now she has to return to her native Canada for one year. She can’t work for the publishing house while out of the country. She needs a quick solution — and she finds one. She asks Andrew to marry her. Andrew reluctantly agrees, but on several conditions: she must promote him to editor and give him a book deal. The ball is on his court. She needs her papers, and he has no reason to do this for her. It should be easy enough, but the immigration officer (Denis O’Hare) won’t let her off the hook easy. Margaret must also travel to Alaska for Andrew’s grandmother’s eightieth birthday, where she must pose as his fiancée the whole time.

So this is a typical rom-com with all the familiar tropes, but it stands out for a number of reasons. The gorgeous Alaska setting is one. The all-star cast is second (Betty White, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, Malin Åkerman, Oscar Nuñez, etc.). And the wonderful world of New York publishing is third. You get a wonderful treat with this movie! I love Ryan Reynolds. His razor-sharp wit and dry humor are so natural, and I always love Sandra Bullock as the brooding, more-than-meets-the-eye heroine. She’s so good in these roles! Downsides? The publishing business setting — while more realistic than most — is still far-fetched. We’d love to think all publishing editors walk around with Pradas and Birkins, but unless you’re the head publisher or a super high-up senior editor, this isn’t the case. Most editors have to work their way up for a long time before they reach such a prominent status, which might explain why Margaret didn’t want to start her career over in Canada. Now on Starz through Ammy Prime Video. Other than that, this is a must-see! Four out of five salted caramel iced lattes, with creamy oat milk!

But a really GOOD three-star rom-com. Fun to watch.

Pros - Fantastic cast. Everyone from Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds to Betty White and the family are all well worth watching. They all have moments to shine and give plenty of heart to the movie. I hadn't realized Malin Akerman was in this. She had an instant chemistry with Reynolds. Kind of wanted to see more of her.

Cons - First, weak plot development. They shove an undeveloped premise down your throat so fast, you can believe the premise, but not the execution.

Second, Sandra plays an unlikable character for too much of the film, (the problem with writers making powerful women unlikable, I guess) and you don't get the sense that the chemistry between them is going to work until they have to shoehorn it in for time making it less believable.

Last, a running gag about a recurring background character appearing as a waiter, male stripper and clergyman doesn't really land (well, for some people it might land, but it felt kind of like a forced gag to me). With a little more setup and a slightly more charismatic actor, this part might have stolen the show. (But props to any actor willing to take on this kind of unique challenge in a movie already filled with comic standouts.)

TLDR: If you like rom-coms and are a little sentimental, this will do for a nice evening in. If you're looking for something edgier or more thought-provoking, why are you watching a rom-com? ;)

Great, Funny Romantic Comedy

One of my go-to romantic comedies. Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock have surprisingly good chemistry and this movie has everything that comprises a great romcom: good lucks, lots of laughs, a tear or two, and that feel good takeaway. Definitely a classic I’ll watch for years to come!

Fun Romantic Comedy

One of my favorite, romantic comedies. Great start. Seen this numerous times and it pulls you right in. Loved the premise, chemistry and banter between Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) and Margaret (Sandra Bullock). Comic timing with them is perfect. Loved the start in NYC and the scenic adventure in Alaska ending with NY office scene and Andrew’s great line at the end.

Side note: Could have done without the ongoing creepy cliché of a character, Ramone. The character is more annoying than funny and it makes no sense that he would be so vulgarly hitting on the fiancé of his boss ’s son in front of him. Dating back to the sitcom, Green Acres, it’s also a tired rip off of the one person wearing many hats in a small town. His only save is Margaret’s comedic avoidance of him at every turn.

Also, unbelievable was Margaret’s ribald rap chants in front of Andrew’s 90 yr old grandmother, Gammy (Betty White). No doubt a man wrote this. If this was this to show Andrew that Margaret can get down and dirty, any man would be put off of a woman doing this in front of his grandmother. The scene was awkward and ridiculous.

Still, this movie is good fun and I would see a sequel….sans Ramone of course.

Excellent pick me up kind of movie.

This movie incorporates all things I love. There’s romance, drama, comedy and travel. Sandra and Ryan really created a fun dynamic that is what we want in a Romantic/Comedy. I’ve watched it several times and now own it because sometimes it’s nice to go to Alaska with a hot guy.

This film is getting a five star review from me even though I bought it but have not watched the DVD. My review is for watching it on Prime. Let me tell you why. I ordered this DVD in Blu-ray and when it came I popped it into my player and it would not play in this area. I have a second player and tried again. I got the same message. Yes, I know I should have known that it wouldn't play but I had to try. No where on the description or on the package it came in did it mention that it wouldn't play in the USofA. I'm in NJ. Anyway I was very disappointed and I am currently trying to send it back. Got in touch with UPS (as instructed) and asked for a pick up. I was told it would be picked up last Wednesday, Aug 25 and I'm still waiting. I go every day to the UPS tracking site and it says the same thing every day. "Check back tomorrow for an update". Am I ticked off, you bet I am.

Now for the film. I love it! Sandra Bullock is one of my favorite Actresses and paired with Ryan Reynolds makes a great team. Their chemistry is fantastic and I can't say enough about the supporting cast. Betty White, always a treat, Mary Steenbugen, Craig T Nelson, and Dennis O'Hare are all fabulous. The only part I wasn't all that happy with was "Ramone". He was kind of annoying and he kept popping up as a male stripper, I would love to unsee that, and as a sales clerk in store and finally as the preacher who was going to perform the wedding ceremony. I truly love this film and would be so happy if could return the DVD and get one that plays in NJ.
