One night brings them together. Another night tears them apart.
Grace Miles misses her easy friendship with Asher, but growing up means growing apart. And really, how could he fall for her when they spent their childhood getting muddy in the creek and splitting sticks of gum?
But this summer, something feels different. If Grace didn’t know better, she’d think Asher was flirting with her. Those dark eyes, hard body, and wicked smile make her insides swirl and her heart dare to hope for things she’s convinced herself she’ll never have.
Falling for your best friend shouldn’t be complicated, but for Asher Bailey, loving Grace is anything but simple. The road to romance isn’t smooth thanks to his pack of wild brothers who are protective of the girl next door, a take-no-sass grandmother, a small town where gossip is a spectator sport, and a feud that spans generations.
But Asher realizes his feelings are too big to ignore. Loving her isn’t the risk. Losing her would be.
And one night, one kiss, changes everything.
Finally admitting their feelings is the beginning of their happily ever after. Until their fairy tale love story is tragically interrupted, and neither of them will ever be the same.
Author’s note: Lifelong soulmates, ridiculous pranks, brother shenanigans, and a feuding town. Protecting You is the Bailey Brothers series origin story. Be there when it begins and fall in love with this wild band of unruly brothers. The series is meant to be heard in order, and Grace and Asher’s story concludes in Fighting for Us.

Asher Bailey is one of five boys raised by their grandparents after their parents are killed in a house fire. Asher had some trouble with the in the law as a juvenile, the result of a longstanding row between two families that split the town's loyalties. Asher dreams of becoming a firefighter and one day the chief. But he has to wait 1 more year to seal his juvenile record so it won't impinge on him being hired. There is one more thing that Asher dreams of and that is Grace, the girl nextdoor.
Grace grew up nextdoor to Asher. Her home life wasn't as good as Asher's was but Asher and Grace had practically been joined at the hip throughout childhood. Grace has always dreamed of a forever with Asher but gave up on that goal when Asher started dating other girls. Back from her second year of college for summer break, Grace finds Asher wanting to take the step to start dating her. As the two date and make plans for the future, they are struck by a tragedy that pulls them apart.
No one ever said love was easy but is their true love strong enough to survive?
This book is actually a prequel to Fighting for Us. It gives us some important back story on the Baileys and Grace. The book does leave the reader hanging but it isn't really a cliffhanger. The next book comes out one week from the release date of Protecting You.
Especially when they live in a town with a long, crazy town feud. Like, you have to be careful where you order pizza from, because if you order from the wrong family’s place, you can get in real big trouble.
The feud comes to a head in one awful night that leads to an inevitable cliffhanger. But that’s ok. Because Claire has taken pity on us and will be releasing Fighting for Us shortly (if she hasn’t already by the time you read this). And I am sure there will be a big fight in store.
All in all, I’d say this is absolute winner. I definitely recommend it, and I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2. If you haven’t read the Miles Family series yet, I recommend starting there. It’s where we first meet Grace, and I think it definitely adds to the story. Because, as other reviews have pointed out, Protecting You is a prequel! It takes place several years prior Fighting for Us (and, when you read it, you’ll understand why) and the Miles Family. So you get a little sense of “he he, I know what’s happening there,” when you read it.
SPOILER ALERT AHEAD ~~~~. The book was wonderful up until the last 2 chapters. Grace was almost brutally gang raped and H is sentenced to 8 yrs in prison. That’s how the freaking book ends. Now how is that helping me and making me feel better? So if I read the 2nd book, it will take at least half the book to get the H back home from prison and to get him to accept Grace and the house. Plus we will have to relive both the gang rape and prison experiences with both of them separately. Oh, I think I just decided I don’t want to relive all that again so NO I won’t read all that to just get a happy finally in the last paragraph.
I am so pissed I bought both of these books I could scream. I don’t want violence or horrible crimes trapped in my head. I am now so put off by this author I feel betrayed and WONT risk it again.
Protecting You is first act in Asher Bailey and Grace Miles' love story, spanning years of friendship and young love. They are truly a couple that grows up together, and grows in love together. Childhood best friends, they are the calm in each other's storm when they need it. Just when it looks like they are on their way to their happily-ever-after, they are thrown a horrible curveball that keeps them apart for 8 years. Through it all, Asher strives to be what Grace needs, and to always put her first.
I can't wait for the conclusion of their story in Fighting for Us. Luckily the two books will be released close together because if anyone deserves their happily-ever-after, it's Asher and Grace.

So, we start with Asher Bailey… he’s been in love with Grace, the girl next door his whole life. They have been inseparable most of their childhood but have never dated. They’ve dated other people, particularly when they both went to college, but it never felt right. It’s like they always knew deep down that their hearts belonged to each other.
At 21, Asher is a year away from finishing college. He has his whole career mapped out. He wants to be a Firefighter, then rise through the ranks. He just needs to keep his nose clean so that he can get in.
When a 20 year old Grace returns from WSU for the summer, Asher suddenly realises that she is what is missing from his future. In a bid to resolve it he sets out to win her over. But does she feel the same?
The other thing is his brothers. The oldest of five boys, Asher and his brothers are close following the death of their parents. They’ve lived with Gram ever since. She’s a wise and wonderful old lady and is always the pillar of strength and giver of the best advice. The trouble is, all the brothers are extremely protective of Grace. She’s like the sister they never had. Would they approve of Asher taking his relationship with Grace to next level?
Of course, he needn’t have worried because the brothers are in full support of this new development and give the couple their full support.
Everything is going according to plan. They’re all loved up and planning their future together, but a tragedy befalls this beautiful couple and their whole future together is thrown into turmoil. With the whole family rallying round to show their support, Asher can’t help but feel lost and defeated. He must face the reality that his plans for him and Grace and their long and happy life together are over.
But Grace won’t give up on the man she loves. She waited her whole life for him… and as much as he tries to push her away and to face life without him, Grace is not going to let him go.
This story broke me… I’m devastated. I mean, I know these romance stories have twists and turns but this twist floored me. I’d already fallen in love with this fabulous couple. They are so perfectly suited, but it’s a real “life’s a b*#ch” moment that my heart just plummeted.
Once again, as always with Kingsley’s books, it’s well written and therefore easy to read. She always writes with heart and feeling, and her characters and circumstances are relatable and believable.
I feel like I live every moment with these characters. The emotions, the ups, the downs, highs, lows… it’s so consuming.
So, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. But have the tissues ready… it’s not an easy ride. I’m hoping book 2 cheers me up a bit.

This story is sweet, full of love with a few bits of angst thrown in. Could not put this book down. Can't wait to read the conclusion of Asher and Grace's story.
Ashers brothers are amazing characters and I can't wait to read more of them when they get their own books. (Hint hint Claire Kingsley!!)
Also, the Miles family make an appearance which was awesome (loved their books too!!)
All in all, loved this story from beginning to end.
Absolutely recommended.

I couldnt put this book down. The heat between these two characters is crazy flirty fun and kept me hooked.
I am now onto book 2 with the rest in the series downloaded.
Thank you for an amazing book.
