Pulsar Race: A Starship's Mage Universe Novella Kindle Edition
From the Publisher
In the science fantasy universe of Starship’s Mage, humanity never cracked the lightspeed barrier with technology. Instead, elite Jump Mages and their magic are the literal engine that moves starships and powers the expansion of humanity.
Starship’s Mage was originally released as a serialized space fantasy adventure in the style of the pulp magazines of old, then compiled as book 1. The series continues over three distinct arcs, with stories that dive deeper into Glynn Stewart’s unique world of science and magic.
Explore the Protectorate of Humanity, overseen by the roving warrior judges of the Mage-King of Mars—as their worlds crack at the seams.

Captain Karl Charpentier is at the end of a long series of poor decisions, both personal and financial. Beyond his son, the Restoya, a modified high speed courier ship is all that brings meaning to his life. Deep in debt to the mob he reaches out to his his oldest friend, Mage-Captain Ivan Holloway. who is just beginning to understand the unending monotony of retirement, to join with him and save Restoya by winning an illegal space race run by the very mobsters Charpentier is in debt to.
A classic caper plotline with many of the twists and turns associated with that trope is only made stronger by the familiarity the reader has with the Starship's Mage universe, the frisson of danger, and a dusting of magic. Will they or won't they? Download today and find out.
I don't want to spoil anything for you, but if you like the Starship's Mage universe you will probably like this. If you are on the fence about the other Starship's Mage books then this is probably not they one that will hook you.
Any book by Glynn Stewart pretty much makes my day!
I received a free electronic review copy in exchange for my honest review. ... then I preordered this novella because not paying to support the author would feel wrong.
I received an ARC for my review. I enjoyed the story enough to buy my own copy to support the author.
An old friend in trouble, his entire crew has left him and he is bordering on the brink of bankruptcy and loss of his ship. Ivan Holloway, retired Mage-Captain from the Royal Navy, listens to his friends audacious plan to get himself back on track and, against his better judgement, decides to help him out. The plan? Race thru two pulsars. The chance of finishing alive? Not great. Then comes the visit from a mobster. Just what has Ivan gotten himself into?? Subterfuge, action, intrigue... Edge of the seat kind of book! A MUST READ!!!
while i did recieve an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review, i can say i also purchased this as well.
Stewart had never disappointed me with his stories. I've read almost all of his books and I am looking forward to reading the rest.

As someone who gave 5/5 to every other book by Glynn in this universe, I was very disappointed.
Glynn's novellas are always somewhat weaker in terms of character development, but the action quality was also weaker here. (unlike, say, Wardtown), with the scenes being somewhat predictable.
This made the book feel more like a plot contrivance, except in a dedicated book. For other authors, I might have given it a 3/5, but from Glynn I expected better.
Unless he creates another book in this arc, I wouldn't suggest purchasing it. While the characters might crop up elsewhere, there's nothing critical in this I can see that would heavily change your understanding going on.
Note: I received a free electronic copy in exchange for an unbiased review (but liked it enough to buy a copy anyway)
