This is a technique book and it establishes the basics quite well. My playing has only improved from this. I believe that a guitarist willl never be able to move past an intermediate level without applying the techniques and exercises outlined in this book.
I recommend the DVD version. It doesn't cost much more and helped elaborate. But you can still get benefit without the DVD.
Scott Tennant has some technique books and some repertoire books. Don't confuse them. It's amazing that there are bad reviews for books because the buyer wanted one and bought the other, having not read the titles properly. Now whose fault is that?
I have the edition which has three books in one, which is a bargain for the price!

My tutor, who is very good, recommended this book - and I can see why.
For the guitar student who is serious about learning to play well.
