Soccer mom and demon fighter Barbara Everette has a problem. It seems Janea, Barbara’s assistant and The Foundation for Love and Universal Faith's best operative, has been thrown into a coma by some very nasty magic she’s stirred up. Barbara must track down the perpetrators and break the spell or Janea's soul will be forever lost on the astral plane. Oh, and if she can't break the spell, zombies will destroy all mankind.
Meanwhile, Janea, a stripper and High Priestess of Freya when she isn’t fighting demons, must contend with a spiritual journey of her own. It’s a journey into Janea’s acceptance of herself in all her dimensions (and what dimensions they are!). Where to locate one’s true inner essence? At a science fiction convention, of course. But when rescuers pursue Janea into her vision of a geeky alternate reality, we find this is one science fiction convention where the Guest of Honor could turn out to be Death Himself.
Finally, the Christian soccer mom and the Norse priestess stripper face their greatest challenge ever when an ancient Old One rears Her ugly face, and the Mother of Darkness walks among us. Since this is one Mother who is quite immune to any conventional power, including nuclear weapons, it seems humanity’s only hope is God. The question being: Is God willing to save humanity?

About the author

I'm a professional author of... Well, I used to say "science fiction." Then came There Will Be Dragons, which is sf with a distinct fantasy twist. Then came Ghost which is techno-thriller crossed with porn. Then came Princess of Wands, a Christian soccer mom battling demons through the power of God. Who knows what's next? Children's books? (I've actually got that one mapped out. You see, there's this girl who is raised by dolphins... You think I'm joking, don't you?)

I was delighted to find that Ringo's ability to write moving combat scenes carried over into this story about Barbara Everette, a devout Christian MILF who channels God's power to kill demons. She is also an amazing martial artist and expert shooter.
It was a bit odd to have a Ringo main character who suppressed their sexuality, but at least Ringo made her beautiful with big boobs. Nice touch.
Of course I had to read Book Two and I enjoyed it almost as much. There was a lot of writing devoted to the goings on at DragonCon, which was kind of interesting, but often got in the way of the story. I felt there was also quite a bit of long winded preaching in Book Two, but I still really enjoyed it.
Now, would someone please slap Ringo and tell him to get busy writing more Paladin of Shadows books? Thanks!
John Ringo is known for his very vivid characters who are so well drawn as to seem to be actual people. That is is forte and the reason that I try to read him as often as I can. But he can also sling a story together to keep us guessing and page turning. And of course he is the very best at describing close order combat. In the "Ghost" series his heroes fight crooks and terrorists. In the wonderful Black Tide Rising books the opponents are Zombies. In the Special Circumstances books the enemy is literally Demonic. Or in "Queen of Wands", worse.
But Ringo is also a thoughtful writer. He has Barbara explain a view of the spiritual world that alone is worth the time and money to acquire and read the book.
I like this one very much. I liked having a devout Christian as the central character. I especially like having a central character who was not so full of herself (Christians call it Pride) that she would disdain folk with differing beliefs. Barbara Everette is an example of how to respect folk with different outlooks.
Like the first book, there are three stories here. The first story involves Barbara investigating mysterious events in Chattanooga, where her friend Janea has been found in a sort of magical coma. This story was quite good. The second story involves Janea's spiritual journey while in the coma, as she finds herself at a version of Dragon Con in the astral planes. I was less impressed with this story. The third story involves Barbara and Janea hunting monsters in a system of caves. This story started off really well, but then the author took a questionable turn toward the Apocalypse. Literally. That was a bit much for me.
All in all, this is a unique series that works surprisingly well. Perhaps the author will return to Barbara Everette one day.

What a cliff hanger to end on though!
How does this get resolved? Does it get resolved at all? Did SC Book 3 ever get written?

I binge-read both books in two days. I'm a fast reader, but my attention span isn't what it used to be. I did certain chores around the house because they gave me an excuse to read my book. I got off my desktop games to read. I went to bed even later than usual. Just so I could read these two books.
Are they John Ringo's most exciting books? No. Do they have the best action? No. Sex? None.
What they do have is well-written characters with drives, ambitions, weaknesses and prejudices. Secret lives. Intrigue. A great story, for sure, but the real draw is the characters. No one was 2 dimensional.
Don't get me wrong, though. The action was John Ringo at his best, but it wasn't the best part. The stories were exciting as all get out; I couldn't put them down, after all.
But after reading Barb and Janea's stories, it's the characters that sold these books for me. I can't wait until the next one comes out! It's going to be a doozy!
