About the author

I was born in and grew up in Southern Indiana, but now live in Southern California. While I was working on a master's degree in theater at Indiana State University, two of my plays were regional finalists in the American College Theater Festival's one-act play competition. One play, "Star Collector," was eventually produced in NYC and the characters became the basis for my Sandy Fairfax Teen Idol series.
I also have a black belt in tae kwon do and a master's degree in theology.
I've worked as an actress, jail chaplain, college writing instructor and tour guide/page for a motion picture studio. I'm a member of Sisters in Crime/Los Angeles.
My Sandy Fairfax Teen Idol cozy mystery series was inspired by The Beatles, The Monkees and those goofy spy/detective/action-adventure TV shows of the '60s and '70s.
The first Sandy book, "The Baffled Beatlemaniac Caper," was a 2012 Eureka! Award finalist for best first mystery novel. "Beatlemaniac," revised second edition, is back in print.
Sandy appears in three other books: "The Sinister Sitcom Caper," "The Cunning Cruise Ship Caper" and "The Quirky Quiz Show Caper," all published by Cozy Cat Press.
But wait, there's more! I've launched a new retro-cozy series, The Psychedelic Spy mysteries, with "Flower Power Fatality," set in 1967 in Yuletide, Indiana. Far out! The follow-up, "Hippie Haven Homicide," reunites our intrepid amateur spy Noelle McNabb with the groovy agent Destiny King.
I have short stories in three anthologies: "Faster than a Speeding Bullet" in "Plan B: Omnibus"; "Dark Nights at the Deluxe Drive-In" in "Last Exit to Murder"; and "The Puzzling Puppet Show Caper" (another Sandy Fairfax mystery) in "Cozy Cat Shorts."
I wrote chapter 3 in the group mystery "Chasing the Codex" by Cozy Cat Press.
To atone for killing people on paper, I pen the Roots of Faith column for the Acorn Newspapers (www.theacornonline.com).
For 18 years I've been feeding and spoiling black cats, but am currently catless. Hopefully that will change in the near future.

"I hung up, feeling a bit mystified at why sleuthing came easily to me and why playing detective for real gave me such a thrill"
Ernest Farmington, aka Sandy Fairfax, a former teen idol, still banked on his fame. It sure didn't hurt that his teen dective show still played in reruns, and his music fame still gave him work enough to keep him sane. He coyldn't understand at his brother, Dr. Warren Farmington, well known professor of music wasn't happy to see him when he visited while Warren was practicing at the theater where Sandy's films would be drawing a crowd that weekend. It's not that they don't care about each other and their sister and parents, its that they approach life differently. Warren feels Ernest gave up. And he might have. However, he's clean and sober, and his fame can help do things, while Warren teaches, something Sandy knows he's not able to do.
Recently returned from a cruise ship gig with his sister, he's accepted a job on a quiz show. It's a strange show and very popular. And Ernest feels there's something "shady" behind the scenes, especialy when he finds a dead student of Warrens lying in the corridor of the theater his brother plays the organ at, and the kid has Warren's prize letter opener protruding from his back.
Ernest begins to string together a theory that brings all the discordant threads together to help his brother not be arrested for the kid's murder, while he and Warren prepare to a big fund raiser for their father's orchestra. Sandy/ Ernest is the headliner and the venue is at a well known composer's estate, where his widow now lives. She was married to the man who was Warren's mentor during his studies. Ernest sees connections that bring this "caper" to a interesting conclusion.
Maybe because I grew up with "Nancy Drew" and "Hardy Boys" mysteries in the 60s era of teen idols, this book was really enjoyable. It wasn't "formulaic" as those were. This is an intelligent, well written mystery and most people will enjoy it a lot.... and then search out others. A wonderful read !
Sandy has just accepted a job for a TV quiz, he is not very enthusiastic about it but must do it so to keep alive his popularity. His brother Warren is in trouble: is a university professor and is accused of the murder of one of his students. Between them there has always been a strong rivalry but he can't help but help him. Meanwhile he must try to conquer a beautiful woman and try to build a good relationship with his children.
I liked all of the characters. Sandy is funny and smart and I enjoy each time that I get to spend with him.
It can be read as a stand alone even if it is the fourth book in the series.
It was a quick read, easy and very fun, a good mix of mystery and humor. A really enjoyable summer read, it had me hooked from the first page.
After a recent cruise where he got involved in a murder investigation, Sandy wasn’t expecting to be involved in another murder mystery. This one is closer to home with the prime suspect being his younger brother, Warren. One of Warren’s students is discovered dead and all fingers are pointed in Warren’s direction. Sandy can’t sit quietly by as his brother is arrested. Besides, in his younger days, Sandy played a boy detective. He puts his skills to good use to discover the real story behind the murder.
This is the fourth book in the series. I’ve only read one of them, which I loved. I feel that this book stands on its own, even if the previous book is mentioned. It doesn’t take anything away from this book at all. Although, after reading this one, I want to go back and read the two I missed.
Sandy Fairfax is a truly fun character. A bit of a satire of teen idols with a lot of heart. He’s the kind of guy you can care about and hope that his luck will change for the better. In this book, he begins to reconnect with his family – particularly his brother and father, as well as his children from a previous marriage. There’s even some romance in store for Sandy.
The author does an excellent job of giving the reader a taste of the celebrity life. She, also, blends mystery, romance and adventure to perfection. I was totally taken by surprise as to who the killer was – I didn’t see that coming at all. I loved every minute of this one and am looking forward to more Sandy Fairfax stories.
