4.0 out of 5 starsIt does the job I need, though sometimes it isn't obvious
Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2018
This could be the most informative review you'll find on the Ruizu X02, 8 Gb internal memory. I give it the stars based on a comparison with other players at this price that serve this function. Maybe I'm giving 4 instead of 5 so you'll read it, since so many 5 star reviews seem so meaningless and fake. And I've not had it long enough to give an honest statement on durability. (I skip the extremes and read only the 2, 3 or 4 star reviews since they tend to be more informative. I'll use 4, even though my negatives below are really quite minor.)

I don't understand the reviews and questions by people who want a device that is simpler and less expensive than their phone, then are amazed that a player at this price doesn't do the same things as their phone or old iPod that died after a couple years. This isn't a phone. Its not an iPod. It does the job. If I get several, and each one I buy lasts 12 months, collectively they outlasted an iPod and still cost signficantly less.

I want a small, simple device to play through headphones while I exercise or lay about or drive my 2 or 4 wheel motor vehicles. I want an inexpensive player so I would not risk losing or damaging a more valuable device like my phone. And it does the job. No matter how good the headphone, I'll snag the cord on a chair or the cat will grab it, breaking the wires and needing another pair. Other pairs are easy to find, they don't cost much, and expensive ones don't last longer. For now, the ones that came with X02 are okay. They do the job.

I listen to podcasts, and sometimes selected music. Plug the Ruizu X02 cable and move mp3 files from the computer into files on the player, then turn it on and play the files. It does the job. I don't have a countless collection of music files that play for more hours than I would probably play in a lifetime that I'd want to stuff on the mp3 player at the same time to play in confusing lists or scrambled that I'd never know what is playing. I play what I want, and when my preferences change, I delete the old and put on new files. For me it does the job.

I'd not use the X02 for videos, or pictures or even ebooks. If the screen was the same size as the entire front of the device, I'd have to use a magnifying glass to see any details or get more than a couple words per screen. The screen is a good size to see what is playing or what files you are opening, so for that it does the job.

The negative is exactly what buttons do which job is uncertain. Apparently, there are different versions of Ruizu players with the same model numbers, and I've seen different sellers with minor variations all implying they made the players. And yet, the same brands and model numbers have slight differences. You can see this in the reviews by verified buyers. Even the sellers don't always know exactly how the buttons work on the variety of phones that all say Ruizu x02. If you aren't willing to spend a little time pressing and/or holding different sequences of buttons to see what happens, you might give up. For example, to restart the player later on where you left off, you need to go to sleep mode instead of turning it off. The directions and other users say press and hold the button in the center of the dial to sleep. I do it and mine goes to "easy" mode. I like easy mode when I'm using it, but easy isn't sleep. I see this in the answered questions on Amazon. I asked online, and the seller says press and hold the center button. That didn't help. I experiment. I learned. I now press and hold the volume button at the bottom of the outer dial. When the volume slider shows, I press and hold the center button and it goes to sleep. In easy mode, I just mash the top or bottom of the outer ring and the volume slider appears, then press and hold the center button. It took a bit of time, but I finally found the sleep mode. And the player does the job.

I listen to the podcasts during morning exercise, the drive in to the office, and the drive home, I might play some music later while reading, then load in a new collection of podcasts before going to bed. For what I need, it does the job. And by having this item, I don't do things with my phone that might cause me to damage or lose it.

One thing the X02 lacks that I'd like in something this small is a hole through the same edge with the headphone plug, a clean hole that comes out nearby in the back. A hole like that is common in many other players, and I would thread in a lanyard that I could carry around my neck for the times my shirt doesn't have a pocket. And even when my shirt has a pocket, on a lanyard it won't fall out and yank on the headphone plug in a way that kills the player. Well, no big deal. Not all mp3 players have it. If that becomes important to me, I have superglue gel and a jump ring, a method I used before. For now, I use a 1930s hidden carry derringer shoulder holster that my nephew played with when he wanted to pretend he was a secret agent. If you don't have one, a cheap grouch bag or neck-carry sunglass case would work, too.

Later tonight, I'll load in more podcasts.

1.0 out of 5 starsBattery failed and leaked acid
Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2018
Had it less than two months and the battery ruptured, dripping acid throughout and destroying everything, even the control wheel fell out. I was there from beginning to end and in less than an hour this item catastrophically failed, dismantled itself, and drained the battery acid, luckily not on me. I realize this is a cheap Chinese knock-off mp3 player and that sometimes electronics fail due to manufacturing processes but being (potentially) burned by battery acid after less than two months of use is bad, but not as bad as the return/refund window, which according to my order lasted only a week (longer than it took for me to even get it, which I had no control over)...I wish I could say I'd give it another try, especially after moving over to this from Apple and enjoying the change, but how many $75 mp3 players do I need to go through before guaranteeing I won't have another explode in my pocket like this one nearly did

For the price, you really can’t complain.
The sound quality is actually very good. It’s pretty easy to use although the controls take a bit of getting used to (pressing right for down, and up for back) but that’s not a big deal. It’s easy to get songs onto it, just drag and drop or copy/paste from your computer to it when it’s plugged in.

Couple things to note:
You have to do the songs themselves when copy/pasting (trying to keep it organized in folders results in “no songs found” on the player) but having said that, when you play it on the player t automatically sorts it by artist and album.

One computer I plugged it into the folders were labeled in Chinese. Again, you just have to copy/paste songs onto the usb (not into the folders) so it doesn’t really matter but it did throw me off for a second.

My 9 year old wanted a music player so we got him this and he uses it all the time now. We haven’t done videos or ebooks on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The other way is very cool that I strongly recommend to all of you

The day when I received the device, I load all my favorites music in it, This device built-in 8GB after I load 500 songs, there are still over 6GB memory left, I will load other lovely songs in future when I collect more. I often use this music player in two way, one is that I can plug the earphone into the earphone jack, listen to music by earphone, The other way is very cool that I strongly recommend to all of you, if your car has audio port, you could connect the music player with your car by audio cable, after that you could enjoy your favorites songs on your car

The play mode you could select repeat mode or shuffle mode, I really like this small thing coming with other functions, such as E-book, Video, FM radio and others, but I do not use them often, Just playing music is enough

5.0 out of 5 stars Shuffle Play!!!
Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2018
Color: BlackCapacity: 8GBVerified Purchase
I read the reviews and took a shot on this and happy I did. This is a no-frills MP3 player - you charge it up, load songs, hook it to a speaker or headphone and listen to music. No WiFi, no Bluetooth, no overly complex product with features you don't need or require you to login and have your activity monitored.

PROs:
* Small and lightweight - I thought I was shipped an empty box until I opened it.
* Sliding power button - probably one of its best features - no, not the sliding button with a spring you have to hold for x seconds to power up or down, this my friends is a simple power switch. Slide it one way, its ON, slide the other way, its off. No waiting for power-ups, shut downs, etc. In the middle of song and you have to shut it off? - just flip the switch and you're done.
* Has internal memory! - I didn't read the description in detail, so maybe I missed this, but I hooked it up to my computer to charge, fully prepared to rip open the 32GB micro SD card I bought with it to load songs and viola, the MP3 player has its own flash drive. I apologize, I don't recall the size the size, but I loaded well over 4GB of MP3s without and issue and they played fine.
* Battery seems good and long, I connected it to a passive speaker and it played for well over six hours without issue. Pretty sure it will go much longer, but I haven't tested it extensively.
* Simply a great device if you just want a simple MP3 player without worrying about running your phone's battery down, buying a Bluetooth speaker, or forgetting to grab your phone that you connected to a wired speaker.

CONs:
*It's small, lightweight and made of plastic (not bad things), so while it's tempting to throw in your pocket, I'd worry about snapping it in half. It's not flimsy per se, but I wouldn't risk dropping it or putting it somewhere it might get tossed around or compressed.
* My only complaint (hence the four star rating) is there is no shuffle option - at least not that I've been able to find. As others have stated, there doesn't seem to be a good way to choose songs. Personally, I don't need to pick a specific song, I just want to listen to music in a random order. So far it appears to either play in the order songs were loaded in or alphabetic order - haven't paid really looked into which. I know many modern cars with USB ports for playing MP3s go the former route. There is software you can download to select the play order for such devices, but the problem is still the same for me - the player will always play the songs in the same order. I assumed this was the case when I bought it, I was just hoping it wasn't.

All-in-all, it's still a great player at a reasonable price.

Updated 10-12-18

Found the shuffle play! Maybe this is in the manual I haven't read, but if you're playing a song and press the M button, the player will show some additional menu items. Among them is shuffle. Select it then scroll to YES (no seems to be the default). Press the center button then you're golden. Really love this player now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap MP3 players for kids

I bought this for a non-profit organization to use for music therapy for the kids. It was super cheap for 8gb; enough to hold a 1000 songs. It has games, a voice recorder, fm/am radio, pictures. Super easy to use. Can't beat the price!

1.0 out of 5 stars Buttons are depressed...
Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2018
Color: BlackCapacity: 8GBVerified Purchase
There is a button on the device that does not operate as it is labeled. Vol button would indicate and states in the instructions it is for adjusting the volume but does not do that. This device is great for connecting to Bluetooth head phones or speakers, playing music from to other devices that have volume control. It also has a problem with a card loaded into it, like many of the other models I have purchased.
I tried loading from a laptop (Windows) into the device, that was successful and the MP3 files played well.
Video files only work in AMV format, which the device did come with a software converter to AMV.
Next I tried a SD card, SanDisk 32GB Fat32 formatted drive.
I loaded the folders of my MP3s for testing onto the card and then inserted it into the device without issue.
Then I tried to access the MP3s on the card.
The menu is confusing because you must create a playlist through the software before the device can play them.
I tried several times creating the playlist without success. Then I choose the Card Folder option and it tried to create a playlist as well without success.
Next I tried with just MP3 files on the card, no folders, and that worked. but still did not allow access to them through the Music menu, had to access the MP3s through the Card Folder under the music menu.
Not good for accessing new content every time through that menu and then having to create a playlist again...
Next, the device would react differently depending on when you pressed the Vol button.
Sometimes it would restart the device, go to the menu, open the music list, or shutdown the device.
I do not recommend the device to anyone and I am returning mine.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worked fine—until it was time to charge it

I sent this to my son in West Africa, and it worked fine until the battery died. The charger didn’t work at all—the connection was way too loose. So he was only able to use it for a few days. Such a major disappointment. It’s expensive to ship things to him, and he couldn’t ship it back to me to get a return, so he just had to do without it, and I’m out the money I paid for it. Bummer!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive. Good sound quality, terrible user manual, interface that takes getting used to.
Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2018
Color: BlackCapacity: 8GBVerified Purchase
I have to say that the user manual is the main problem. It lacks detail, particularly about problems you might encounter. It's loaded with typos and grammar errors and is obviously an imperfect translation from another language. One example among many is that a section is titled "Date Transfer" when what is obviously meant is "Data Transfer." The typeface is near-microscopic... it's like trying to read a credit card privacy statement. I had to use reading glasses AND a magnifying glass.

I had a bit of difficulty transferring my music files to the player. This was partly the fault of iTunes (don't get me started). Once I got the data transferred I could not find it on the player! There is nothing in the user manual telling you to look for the music in a "folder." I can play the music now after opening the folder, but I have to perform this step every time I turn the player on. How do I get the music out of the folder? No idea. Nothing in the manual.

With the SD card inserted, the device shows up on my desktop as two separate disks. Which is OK, except that when you eject one of the disks, the other one ejects too, prompting a warning that you have disconnected the device without ejecting a disk. Am I damaging files? No idea. There is no way to properly eject both discs that I have found.

On the positive side: the sound quality is good and their on-line support was prompt in replying and somewhat helpful. It would not have been needed had the manual been more useful.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible controls, missing features

Have owned Sansa Clips and also iPods for many years, so I'm biased a bit by those experiences... nonetheless, even for as little as this costs, it's really, really disappointing. You can't back out of the menus (despite what it says in the directions)… the only way to get back to the top parent menu is to turn the device off and then back on. Next: the only way to hold your place in an audio file is to put it on pause and then put the device to sleep, which runs down the battery. I let it sit this way (pause-sleep) overnight, and I returned and the battery was completely run down. User Manual is not accurate. There is no audiobooks' file folder. Instead there is a Video file, but no one I know would ever watch a video on this instead of their phone.
