As the deadly phenomenon repeats and expands amidst the world’s most densely populated cities—carving apartment buildings in half, scooping away entire city blocks, and claiming thousands of lives—Jack Sigler, Callsign: King and his black ops team take action. But the team is broken, spread across the globe and vulnerable. Scrambling to make sense of the violent disappearances and fighting to reunite, the team comes face-to-face with an otherworldly enemy capable of making the fearless...terrified.
Taking the battle to the ends of the Earth—and beyond—the team combats a savage enemy whose centuries-old plan for mankind has nearly reached fruition. If they fail, the planet will become little more than a fully stocked food cache for a creature whose presence heralds the beginning of Ragnarök—and the extinction of the human race.
Ragnarok is the fourth full-length novel in the Jack Sigler/Chess Team series, following Pulse, Instinct and Threshold, as well as the prequel novel Prime, and eight standalone novellas focusing on the individual characters in the series.
PRAISE FOR ROBINSON and the JACK SIGLER THRILLERS
"Robinson blends myth, science and terminal velocity action like no one else."
-- Scott Sigler, NY Times Bestselling author of INFECTED and ANSCESTOR
"Just when you think that 21st-century authors have come up with every possible way of destroying the world, along comes Jeremy Robinson."
-- New Hampshire Magazine
"There's nothing timid about Robinson as he drops his readers off the cliff without a parachute and somehow manages to catch us an inch or two from doom."
--Jeff Long, NY Times bestselling author of THE DESCENT
"Jeremy Robinson is a fresh new face in adventure writing and will make a mark in suspense for years to come."
--David Lynn Golemon, NY Times bestselling author of LEGEND and EVENT
"Jeremy Robinson is an original and exciting voice."
--Steve Berry, NY Times bestselling author of THE EMPEROR'S TOMB
"With THRESHOLD, Jeremy Robinson goes pedal to the metal into very dark territory. Fast-paced, action packed and wonderfully creepy! Highly recommended!"
--Jonathan Maberry, NY Times bestselling author of ROT & RUIN
" [SecondWorld] is gripping, propelled by expertly controlled pacing and lively characters. Robinson's punchy prose style will appeal to fans of Matthew Reilly's fast-paced, bigger-than-life thrillers, but this is in no way a knockoff. It's a fresh and satisfying thriller that should bring its author plenty of new fans."
-- Booklist
"A brisk thriller with neatly timed action sequences, snappy dialogue and the ultimate sympathetic figure in a badly burned little girl with a fighting spirit... The Nazis are determined to have the last gruesome laugh in this efficient doomsday thriller."
-- Kirkus Reviews
" Relentless pacing and numerous plot twists drive this compelling stand-alone from Robinson... Thriller fans and apocalyptic fiction aficionados alike will find this audaciously plotted novel enormously satisfying."

I think the big thing holding Ragnarok back was the lack of teamwork displayed by the Chess Team members. In the first 3 Chess Team novels (certainly the first two) the Chess Team members worked very well together and they interacted a lot. This book starts off after all the novellas (featuring each Chess Team member) which were written after the 3rd Chess Team novel was published. I read two of them. This book assumes you read all 8. I was hoping the novellas would come down in price, but they haven't yet ($2.99 for some very short stories, except for the King novellas which are okay in length).
Another factor: The choice for a villian. I was not crazy about the choice for the BIG villian. This almost made me feel I was reading a Bob Mayer book, either from his Area 51 series or his Atlantis series ( Area 51 *** ATLANTIS ). While I love those series and have been reading the books, I was expecting a different type of action from the Chess Team stories. This book feels "out of place" in the Chess Team line of books.
One more factor: The actual story only takes up 89-90% of the book (if that). The rest is previews. I don't mind a small preview everyonce in a while, but these previews took up a full 10% or more. I paid $7.99 (it now sells for under $5) and I kinda expect a full book. Might need to check samples a little closer to check the table of contents.
I plan to read some more books by Jeremy: Island 731 and Project Nemesis: A Kaiju Thriller . And I will probably read another Chess Team novel, but it will not jump to the top of my TBR list.
*******
First, the good:
- I'm always happy to see the return of the Chess team. The stories and characters are entertaining.
- The snappy dialogue makes me laugh. The best line in this book had to be one character berating another character for not having a punchline at a particularly dramatic moment.
- Scary monsters are always cool.
- Trade paperback instead of hardcover! Yay!
- I can take or leave the gadgets and guns, but I'm totally onboard with aircraft! Excellent!
The bad:
- This is probably on me, but I was kind of lost in the overall narrative. I didn't read most of the novellas that Robinson published over the months in between Chess Team novels. The few that I read seemed to be one-off adventures. Evidently I should have kept going. It seems as though important events took place in those books that set up the make up of the new organization.
- Fights took over too much of the content. It was established that the wolves kept coming en-masse. Did we really need to know how the team members dispatched of each and every one? After a while, I just started skimming. This was the biggest disappointment for me. Battle scenes just overwhelmed any sense of plot.
- Everyone was separated for too long without any real references to communication among the various groups. I get that this team of warriors is suppposed to have developed a certain instinct for working together, but it seemed as though something was either edited out or just assumed.
This book just felt "off" in comparison to the others about this team. My understanding is that future novels in this series are forthcoming. I hope that Robinson returns to the full-bodied stories of his earlier works instead of relying on a 300-page battle.
While I enjoy Norse mythology, it is not nearly as interesting to me as Greek mythology is. Perhaps that reason I was not entirely thrilled with the newest installment of the Jack Sigler Series. Certainly, the book was entertaining and the action sequences did, for the most part, retain their thrill. However, there were some parts where I felt the story lagged in ways that weren't evident in previous books. In particular, the "dream state" sequences dragged. While I understand their significance and can appreciate the artistic evolution of the writing, at times I found they caused my interest to wane.
There are several qualities that remained consistant Robinson's writing. Primarily, the descriptive writing was pretty much on par with the earlier books and remains a strength. Additionally, the element of humor (primarily provided by Rook) continues its appeal. Some of Rook's choice declarations inspired genuine belly laughs. Lastly, new characters are seamlessly introduced into the series, with future roles that can be clearly envisioned.
In short, while this book was my least favorite book of the series it has its merits and I did enjoy reading it.
Top reviews from other countries

From the opening and throughout, this book does not stop the action coming. The plot is well constructed and the chapters end on cliff hangers that leave you wanting more.
The different locations are handled excellently throughout the novel bringing all together for a fantastic finale.
Would suggest reading Chess Team: Rook (if you don't read any of the other - but would recommend these too). before reading this one.
In my humble opinion, I think it is a crime that Jeremy Robinson has not reached the same notoriety in the UK as James Rollins or Matthew Reilly (who have a similar style and feel), but an not recommend this book highly enough. If you want to try one of Jeremy's stand alone books first, would also highly recommend "SecondWorld".
Can't wait for the next one.

I am a fan of Matthew Reilly,Scott Mariani,Matt hilton,James Rollins and Lee Child (last book not included) to name but a few but Jeremy Robinson has fast become my favourite author , try it you will not regret it.
