Irene converses with the reader in a lighthearted and engaging manner, as her opening comments attest: ‘Pigs can be an incredible asset to a small homestead. Besides meat, they can have functional benefits on the land. In addition, they are intelligent and can be relational and even affectionate with the proper training. This book is written as an essential guide for beginner pig keepers on a small homestead. We focus on the smallest of the heritage breeds, American Guinea Hogs and Kunekune pigs, assuming small herds of 2 – 8 pigs. If you choose larger breeds to work with on your homestead, then this book will provide a solid foundation for keeping pigs on your land, but you will need to find the information on the breed you choose specifically. If you have the acreage to have 10+ pigs, this book will be an excellent foundation for you, but you will need to supplement with resources and information about commercial pigs.’ She then posts the answers to the FAQs everyone likely has about pigs in general!
Given that obvious depth of knowledge as well as personal experience in raising pigs, Irene then instructs in a step by logical step how begin by selecting types/breeds, a detailed explanation of the various types of pigs, how to maintain pigs (shelters, bedding, nutrition, possible ailments), breeding, butchering and more – all information is enhanced with fine photographs. She offers everything we need to know to begin raising backyard pigs.
Irene Mills restores our faith in ourselves, as providers and for self-sustenance. Recommended reading – and using! Grady Harp, July 21
