Try an Experiment: Rising Waters
The real question: Why would water flow upward?
•Shallow metal or borosilicate glass pie pan
•Small glass jar
1. With the help of an adult, place the pie pan onto the burner of a stove.
2. Pour about an inch of water into the pie pan and stir in 2 drops of food coloring.
3. Place the glass jar upside-down into the water in the pie pan, making sure the jar is stable.
4. Heat the water to near boiling on the stove and then turn off the burner.
5. Allow the water, pan, and glass jar to cool.
The Real Chemistry Behind How and Why: Air is a mixture of gases, mostly nitrogen and oxygen. When you heat the water, some of the water molecules leave the liquid state and become a gas. Like all gases, water, oxygen, and nitrogen take up more space (volume) when hot. When we heated the water, we filled the glass jar with lots of gas molecules. As the water and gases cooled, they occupied less space, and some of the water condensed back to the liquid state. This created a vacuum that was filled by the water.
STEAM Connection: During the experiment, you are examining the volume of space that gas occupies. This is a math term, but mathematics is critical to understanding our scientific observations.

Then I found this book. There are simple, quick experiments. Longer, more complex ones. The book covers concepts and theory as well as the actual physical work. For the 8 year old some of that is too much. It's "can we get to the lab part already!!!?"
Honestly some of the experiments are boring for a kid. Liquid on a penny? Not really visual or exciting. Colors swirling psychedelically on a plate? Heck yea. Iron from cereal? Pretty interesting. Lava lamp? Fun. The chemical reactions section was the most interesting for her. There is one Borax based slime concoction that had the interesting addition of ketchup. There's a Borax based "silly putty" one and another slime as well.
The book is well written and easy to follow. Some basics were missing - corn starch and water for a non-Newtonian fluid for example. But the book has plenty of others I'd never heard of.
You can make these experiments fun, wacky or serious. I still wear a lab coat and we use beakers, flasks and whatever else I have lying around - it adds authenticity. The experiment dealing with candy, water, milk and soda is even better if you use a clear plate and put it on a mirror.
Plenty of projects for all ages, most averaging about 10 minutes. You can stretch this to 20 or 30 minutes with explanations and prep work.
Also important - the required materials won't set you back a small fortune. You probably have most around the house. Seriously - milk and Skittles. Milk, soda and food coloring. Cereal and a magnet. You get the idea.
The experiments are divided into chapters by Matter, Gases, Chemical Reactions, and Polymers. Although the book talks about atoms, protons, density, noble gases, air pressure, and other scientific terms, a child doesn't have to understand the complexities of the science in order to do the experiments and have fun!
The experiments use materials like plastic cups, vinegar, straws, molding clay, and balloons, and other household items. It's very accessible and easy to set up. There are also cautionary instructions that tell the child when to ask an adult for help. The projects look like so much fun!
With each experiment, there is a small text box that has the STEAM connection showing how the experiment uses math, engineering, or physics in addition to chemistry. There are also Observation questions for the child to answer, as they learn to be scientific observers and collect their data.
There are really colorful and clear photographs showing each stage of the project, and with children modeled in the photos demonstrating how to do the experiment. It really made it easy to visualize how to do each experiment!

Dr. Zovinka begins by explaining what chemistry is and how it connects us to the world around us. Each chapter is devoted to one of the subjects STEAM covers. In them we learn about matter, gases, chemicals and their reactions, and polymers. You don’t know what polymers are? Neither did I, but he gives us the answer – polymers are molecules. He explains how each of these elements works, and then gives kids a chance to find out for themselves through the experiments he suggests.
Clear guidance walks the kids through the various steps. Level of difficulty is given for each experiment along with how long it will take. The necessary materials for the experiments are easy to find. Excellent photography makes it easy to see how the steps progress as well as what you are working toward.
This book offers a great introduction to how much fun and how interesting the study of chemistry can be. Highly recommended!

This is an exciting book for young people. It not only exposes them to the concepts behind Chemistry, but also gives them practical opportunities to experience it and see how it affects their everyday life. This book will open some kids’ eyes to the wonder of the world and for others it will open a whole new pathway for their life’s journey.
Kudos to Edward Zovinka. His love of Chemistry oozes out of each page. But even greater is his love for children and that comes across in over abundance.
This is a book for you to do with your kids. Yes, you can turn them loose with most of the projects, but it would be even more exciting for them, and you, if you would work with them as they walk through these experiments. The wonder and the joy of doing this will excite you and them as you spend this quality time with together.
