The fate of an empire rests in the hands of a young woman with magical blood and nothing left to lose, and an outcast prince determined to save his family at any cost, in this "dark, melodious, and memorable" new fantasy (Library Journal, starred review) from the author of Empire of Sand.
The Ambhan Empire is crumbling. A terrible war of succession hovers on the horizon. The only hope for peace lies in the mysterious realm of ash, where mortals can find what they seek in the echoes of their ancestors' dreams. But to walk there requires a steep price.
Arwa is determined to make the journey. Widowed by a brutal massacre, she's pledged service to the royal family and will see that pledge through to the end. She never expected to be joined by Zahir, the disgraced, illegitimate prince who has turned to forbidden magic in a desperate bid to save those he loves.
Together, they'll walk the bloody path of their shared past. And it will call into question everything they've ever believed...including whether the Empire is worth saving at all.
"Those with a penchant for lyrical prose, intricate world building, beautifully imagined characters, [and] compelling immersive folklore...need look no further." (Booklist, starred review)

The world building is so well done.
Realm of Ash picks up years after the events of Empire of Sand. We are now following Arwa, who is the sister to Mehr from Empire of Sand. We did get to meet Arwa in book one, so she is not necessarily a new face. What I really loved about Arwa is her drive and fierce determination to prove herself as more then just a widow. At the start of the book you find out she has lost her husband in this grizzly battle that left no survivors except for her. This book hits hard on the themes of choice, bonds, trust, and even self worth. The story shines on those themes as well as the relationships that are present. As for the relationship, Arwa and Zahir complimented each other very well. One last thing before I go into some story detail, the cast of characters in Realm of Ash were much more memorable then Empire of Sand.
Realm of Ash is much more of a political driven story. Arwa and Zahir are dealing with the fallout of the events of Empire of Sand and dealing strictly with the Empire. It could be slow at times but I thought it was paced extremely well. The only real issue I had with the pacing was at the very beginning where I asked myself, "When is the plot going to get moving". I also really liked that the magic took a turn and went more death magic where as EoS was more dream magic. I thought it paid off in the end.
The Books of Ambha has concluded and with that I can confirm that more people need to read this series. It is truly something special. Tasha Suri has showed so much promise and potential and I for one am really excited for what's to come.

Arwa's journey was so powerful and fierce and heart-wrenching. The whole book is imbued with her grief and her rage at the roles she's been forced to play and the way that her society has discarded her despite her endless efforts to squash herself into the shape that's been determined for her. She's been taught to hate herself and to change herself to be acceptable, worthy, loveable and useful. Her anger as she realises how she's been used and how much of herself she's lost... powerful doesn't seem like a strong enough word. I felt it in my soul. This book is full of her righteous anger as she struggled to reclaim herself and her story, and it's utterly wonderful.
The world-building, just like in Empire of Sand, is lush and epic. The detail of the realm of ash were intricate and gorgeous. It felt incredibly real to me, when I stopped reading it, I was surprised to find myself in the real world.
In summary, I loved it and I will eagerly await, preorder and read anything Tasha Suri writes next.

I bought this book, I did not get this as a freebie arc for a Review. Having read the first one which was pretty good, it was really okay, quite exciting, interesting, and different, I was keen to follow on the story.
But Ye Gods! I could not read this book¡
I hardly ever don’t finish a book but this one was just plod, plod, plod and actually nothing happened until chapter 21. Sometimes if a book’s not good and I really want to see what happens in the end I speed read it, just skimming pages till I find out what happened, but with this book I could not even be bothered to do that. SAD.
Perhaps the author was being pressurised to produce a follow-up book, but she let herself down badly.
Very lyrical writing but......you gotta have something to give meat and substance to the story. It did not grab the imagination, the heroine oscillated wildly between being angry and strong to being a complete and utter wimp but you’ve got to have consistency of character. OK, we all have good days and bad days but not that extreme!
It just rambled aimlessly about till we got to the end.....presumably.
