5.0 out of 5 starsDaniel Greene managed to improve on the few flaws BoP had
Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2021
Rebels Creed was a fantastic ride from the beginning. The world that had been teased at in BoP got a ton of flesh added and the pacing (which I found jarring at times in BoP) was very smooth. Daniel also managed to keep his strengths from BoP and even improve on them. The characters were remarkably well done, the tone and setting were dark without feeling ridiculous or overdone, and the horror and combat were both presented incredibly well. I thoroughly enjoyed this outing and I cannot wait to see what Greene puts out next. He went from a good first book (technically novella, I guess) to an outstanding book 2, and I am all sorts of ready to see if/how he continues to improve. That said, even if Greene plateaus at this level of quality, I will gladly purchase anything else he releases.

2.0 out of 5 starsNot a great read, but the plot is okay
Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2021
I like Daniel's YouTube channel. I listened to his first book on audible and it wasn't great, but I thought it was okay for a first attempt. I figured I'd give his second book a try.

Let's start with a few good points: Chapman was a solid character. The anointed one felt like a menacing threat. It certainly feels like a force of evil. The plot was reasonably engaging and the setup for the next book is fairly okay. The pacing is fast, which is good because it helps hide the bad points.

Okay, now for the bad. Strap in, it might get rough.

1. The writing itself: The prose was clunky. The descriptions were in no way immersive. The dialogue was so awkward I found myself wondering who talks like that. There's one scene where a character is playing chess to save his life (which was a dodgy setup to begin with, but okay). This scene is completely undermined by Daniel including the actual chess moves in the dialogue. And by this I mean quite literally:
Flip: Pawn d4
Avi: Pawn f5

Did he think I was going to read with a chessboard in set up so I could follow the game? It ruined the apparently tense dialogue. Instead of paying attention to what they were saying, I sat there playing chess in my head. The scene is still a blur that I can barely remember.

2. Sexual content: The sexual innuendos are everywhere. I get that Daniel doesn't like books that have no sex in them, but personally, I don't go through my day getting aroused by tense or dangerous situations. I don't make random references to what old lovers used to discuss after sex. I don't think things like: normally I'd flirt with this person, but I guess now is not the right time. It was just ew. This is especially infuriating because Daniel slammed Jim Butcher for making Harry Dresden a horn dog in the later books. Harry had a magical reason for being a horn dog and even so it felt ew. I do not understand why Daniel took this tack at all.

3. The majority of the characters were flat. Extremely flat. They didn't feel like unique individuals, they felt like secondary characters. I'd go so far as to say some of the secondary characters felt like tertiary characters.

4. Swearing and in-world expressions: Worst point in my opinion: I don't like f-bombs in fantasy. I don't know why, but it pulls me straight out of the fantastical mindset, unless it is urban fantasy set in our time and world. Count of swear words drawn from our world and our time:
F-bomb: 36
C-word: 3
S-word for crap: 28

Lastly, the world building:
The empire feels extremely one dimensionally evil. There is no way to understand why people would show any kind of loyalty to the empire, so you have no conflict about seeing it all burnt to the ground.

The magic system: I have no idea how it works.

Like with Breach of Peace, I feel as though the fantasy elements are tacked on.

I like Daniel's reviews and I honestly feel that if he reviewed his own book without knowing it, he would have ripped it a new one.

Jedi Dropout
4.0 out of 5 stars Gritty Crime Drama turned Fantasy Rebellion

Fantasy?…yes! It’s a unique setting with guns and demigods. Intriguing Characters? …eh, they’re getting there. Fast Paced fun with gritty action, easy to read dialogue and a gripping plot. Absolutely!

This is a fantastically built world and all we get to see of it so far is a single Victorian styled fantasy city. Still that’s enough because we can still see how vast the influence of the currently ruling god(?) that runs the empire. The world is very meticulously built and the societal structure is heavily evident without ever needing to be spelt out.

The writing is a bit choppy at times and there are some definite grammar mistakes. But you’ll miss them if you aren’t a grammar nazi like myself. All in all this was a very fun and gripping read that I’d recommend to anyone who doesn’t mind some expletives and gore in their stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Character Driven Fun

I dove into this straight after reading Breach of Peace and devoured this book in a day.

Once again, it’s the characters that really shine in book. New and old, they really tell the story of varying loyalties, loves and motives of a theocratic empire on the edge of rebellion. But now with a full length book and many different storylines converging, we get to see even more of the worldbuilding and magic system Daniel has been hinting at, and I seriously enjoyed them both!

Side note, as a fan of Daniel’s YouTube content I really felt the chaotic goblin energy he brings to the channel in the pages. He’s got a knack for making a grim, dark setting and giving comedic relief at the best of times. A diverse cast of characters (in race, morality and sexuality), a story both familiar and fresh, and a world that feels like something Brandon Sanderson and Steven King would’ve made after being locked in a room together, all in all I had a blast and can’t wait for the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars I can't wait to see what comes next!

Author Daniel Greene shows much improvement since "Breach of Peace," with better writing and a more ambitious narrative. Continuing from the where "Breach of Peace" left off, we see what started a small conspiracy expand into a conflict that will reach new horizons, and I couldn't be more excited for it. I love the set-up and the world that was crafted. A 19th century inspired fantasy setting is as interesting as it sounds. The world is fresh, dangerous, and exciting. I can't wait for more. I have full confidence in Daniel's ability to continue to improve and provide us with even better stories yet to come.

This book is good. No other words necessary. I bought the book because I enjoyed the first and I think it's important to support self published authors, and it's essentially his fault I'm semi obsessed and 8 books deep into the wheel of time. The book is paced, and I find myself wanting more in this world. I want it all maps, lore and more. Can't wait. Can't say enough great about this book

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tremendous Second Offering

Daniel Greene's initial effort, breach of peace, was a very fun and entertaining read but had its share of issues, as you would expect from a first time author.

Green's second effort shows a lot more promise and is a far more polished and mature offering.

Characters are more fleshed out, story lines more cohesive, and the pacing of the book is far more balanced than breach of peace. Peace.

It will be fun to see where the story goes from here, and getting to know more of the characters and seeing what their fates are in the final volume of this trilogy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rebels Creed Delivers on the promises of its predecessor

As me tioned, rebels creed builds on the promises laid down in the novella. It escalates issues and leaves new promises. The world-building continues as we have more fleshing out, not just of the continent, but the cultures of the people and the magic systems as well. I look forward to seeing how this continues and how well future books deliver on the promises laid down here

Daniel has had an excellent YouTube presence for the last few years and I think that his attention to detail as to what works and doesn't work in the fantasy genre really shows in Rebels Creed
