Reckless Girls: A Novel Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
"Kreinik effortlessly switches among various accents and emotions, keeping listeners riveted as she reveals the novel’s twists and turns." (Booklist)
"Kreinik's range is highlighted as she seamlessly shifts among characters' various accents: a Brit's clipped consonants, a charming Australian's broad vowels, and an American's Southern drawl. As relaxation changes to fear, Kreinik deftly reflects the changing mood." (AudioFile)
From Rachel Hawkins, the New York Times best-selling author of The Wife Upstairs, comes Reckless Girls, a deliciously wicked gothic suspense, set on an isolated Pacific island with a dark history, for fans of Lucy Foley and Ruth Ware.
When Lux McAllister and her boyfriend, Nico, are hired to sail two women to a remote island in the South Pacific, it seems like the opportunity of a lifetime. Stuck in a dead-end job in Hawaii, and longing to travel the world after a family tragedy, Lux is eager to climb on board The Susannah and set out on an adventure. She’s also quick to bond with their passengers, college best friends Brittany and Amma. The two women say they want to travel off the beaten path. But like Lux, they may have other reasons to be seeking an escape.
Shimmering on the horizon after days at sea, Meroe Island is every bit the paradise the foursome expects, despite a mysterious history of shipwrecks, cannibalism, and even rumors of murder. But what they don’t expect is to discover another boat already anchored off Meroe’s sandy beaches. The owners of the Azure Sky, Jake and Eliza, are a true golden couple: gorgeous, laidback, and if their sleek catamaran and well-stocked bar are any indication, rich. Now a party of six, the new friends settle in to experience life on an exotic island, and the serenity of being completely off the grid. Lux hasn’t felt like she truly belonged anywhere in years, yet here on Meroe, with these fellow free spirits, she finally has a sense of peace.
But with the arrival of a skeevy stranger sailing alone in pursuit of a darker kind of good time, the balance of the group is disrupted. Soon, cracks begin to emerge: it seems that Brittany and Amma haven’t been completely honest with Lux about their pasts- and perhaps not even with each other. And though Jake and Eliza seem like the perfect pair, the rocky history of their relationship begins to resurface, and their reasons for sailing to Meroe might not be as innocent as they first appeared.
When it becomes clear that the group is even more cut off from civilization than they initially thought, it starts to feel like the island itself is closing in on them. And when one person goes missing, and another turns up dead, Lux begins to wonder if any of them are going to make it off the island alive.

explain their ulterior motives and nefarious deeds, but the focus is more on plot than actual character development. A quick read.
We learn of the history of three of them. It weaves them together.
I could not stop reading until I knew what happened and how it ended. I’m up late at night writing this review. I think this is a must read by Rachel Hawkins.

Lux and her boyfriend Nico are currently in Hawaii after setting sail on a trip they’ve been dreaming of. Yet Nico’s boat is in need of repairs and he doesn’t have the funds to fix it. Then two college students, Brittany and Amma, hire Nico to sail them to the remote Meroe Island. He uses their fee to fix the boat and Lux accompanies them. After all, there’s no way she’s about to let Nico sail off with two attractive women!
Meroe is a tropical paradise though there’s no fresh water and it has a dark history of shipwrecks and murder. When they arrive they are surprised to find another boat, a luxurious catamaran, anchored in the natural harbour. It is owned by the wealthy Jake and Eliza Kelly. The group swim, drink, flirt, and explore. Various things happen, which I won’t go into to avoid spoilers.
In flashback chapters we learn more about the characters’ backstories and of course being a psychological thriller, everyone has secrets and there are plenty of shocks and twisty twists before the final page.
Yes, ‘Reckless Girls’ is a bit bonkers in places though that suits this kind of escapist thriller. Pour a fancy cocktail and settle down for some mayhem on a tropical not-so-much paradise.
the synopsis of this book immediately hooked me. i was super excited to read it. i read the book in a day. mostly because i was so excited for this ~mystery island~ i was promised but didn’t get. i kept waiting for it to get good which never happened. there was nothing spooking or mildly interesting about the plot. it only got “good” at 90% in. not worth your time or money. i cannot stress that enough
i had a hard time connecting with any of the characters. while i do understand the need for flashbacks, surely they could have been vastly reduced as most of them were unnecessary to the story and rather boring. they took up a lot of the plot.
i didnt like Lux. i felt for her after nico cheated, then she went and did the same thing to eliza? not cool.
i also couldn’t tell if amma and brittney were dating. I thought they were a couple the entire time. It wasn’t until lux & brittney talked about amma cheating I realized amma was just a friend to brittany.
also what a horrible epilogue. did i miss something? who the heck is caroline and tanner? i don’t understand what happened to lux after that ending. i don’t like finishing a book not understanding what happened
