I liked the first book despite the fact it was clear the author is unfamiliar with New York City (an upper east side brownstone overlooking the Hudson River???), but the plot was engaging so I gave this book, the second in the series, a try. The author seems to know a bit more about Chicago, although--a little trivia--Chicago is not called "The Windy City" because of the weather (it's a political joke). I so wanted to love this series--the set up of the friend group from Quantico is great, but this book boarders on the absurd.

Bree, an FBI agent, goes to Chicago to hunt a serial kidnapper she is investigating. It quickly becomes apparent that this is a copycat child abduction and the target of the kidnapper is Bree. She reconnects with a lost love from her childhood, Nathan, and together they play the villain's cat and mouse game.

First of all from an investigative standpoint, the elements are weak. Bree bases her entire investigation on a fact supplied by the kidnapper. Moreover what seasoned investigator would walk into a room, grab and open an envelope barehanded left by the bad guy, and then pass it to her civilian friend to take a look? Furthermore ***spoiler*** the kidnapper doesn't even show up on the radar until the last act when the story that the reader knew nothing about is told.
The romance aspect of the book was great but the mystery left a lot to be desired--lots of loose ends and poorly structured. The wildly over-complicated revenge plot had me rolling my eyes.

Lots of problems with this one

While I enjoyed the first book in this series, I just could not get into this one. A primary issue for me was simply that I found it difficult to like or relate to Bree. From my perspective, there just wasn't a lot to like about her. I liked Nathan better, but was frankly disappointed in him that he was such a sap for Bree.

Aside from the character development issues, the premise of this one was weak. The whole kidnapping drama seemed far-fetched and convoluted, and I found it difficult to believe that Bree would have wound up being a federal agent given her shady juvenile history. The whole thing was just a stretch for me. Add those unbelievable elements to Bree's unlikable character, and it just made for a weak story. I read the whole book, but was frankly glad when I finished it.

I'm still debating about continuing with the series. I think if I'm able to get the next book for a low price, I'll probably give it a shot since I did enjoy the first book. I won't be in a rush to read it, though.

I absolutely loved Reckless Whisper by Barbara Freethy, the second book in her Off the Grid series. I really love romantic thrillers and Barbara Freethy truly delivered an incredible story with Reckless Whisper. Each book in the series keeps getting better. I could not out it down. I loved every page. I have read some of Barbara Freethy's other books, both her romances and other romantic thrillers and have thoroughly enjoyed them. I loved the characters and the way she describes the locations in and around Chicago. I enjoyed that the location for Reckless Whisper was different from the location in Perilous Trust. I really enjoyed how the book was told from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting the insight and feelings from the different characters. Barbara Freethy has shown that she is a master storyteller regardless of the genre. Reckless Whisper is the story of Bree Adams, an FBI agent in the New York Field Office and her former best friend, Nathan Bishop. As a member of the Critical Action Response Detail (CARD) team, Bree is sent to Chicago when it appears that another ten year old girl, Hayley Jansen has been kidnapped by the media dubbed, White Rose Kidnapper. When Bree goes to the home of Grace Roberts to interview her since she was the last person to see Hayley before she was abducted, Nathan Bishop answers the door. Grace Roberts is Nathan's niece. I love the reaction that each one of them had to the other. Aside from the case, Bree has been receiving mysterious phone calls that leads her to examine her own past in Chicago and with Nathan. Bree left Chicago eleven years ago, when she was pregnant put her baby up for adoption after she was born. Bree and Nathan work together to try to bring Hayley home, even though the Chicago FBi office has benched her from the case. While they are searching for Hayley, Bree and Nathan share secrets from their past and begin to explore their feelings for one another. I really enjoy the plot twists and the surprises in Reckless Whisper. One of my favorite parts of the story are the poignant moments that Bree and Nathan share, and the moment between Nathan and his sister, Josie. I love how Hayley was rescued and that good triumphed over evil in the end. I love how the Epilogue, wraps up the ending of the story. Never would I have guessed who was behind the kidnapping and the threats against Bree, that was truly a surprise plot twist. I love how all the lose ends got tied up. It was an incredible story and I loved every page. So looking forward to reading Wyatt Tanner's story in Desperate Play.

Her reconnection with Nathan stirs up old feelings and he is weary of his heart being trampled upon by Bree, again. Together they rescued Hayley, Bree kills Stix, and Johnny is dead, leaving several unanswered questions like who gave Stix her FBI file information, and why is Wyatt in California.

Great plot and character development, with the underlying theme, of revenge is a dish served cold. Loved this series, now onto book one. A MUST-READ!

The first book in the series was fairly good. This one had a very weak plot. Bree sees a child on a train and "thinks" it's her daughter that she gave up for adoption. She then decides that the kidnapped girl IS her daughter. What no DNA test? And conveniently the mobster father of the girl dies of a gun shot wound so he can't claim parental rights! Not a probable plot.
