I’m a sucker for book covers. So when I saw Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, with its pearly-white background and upturned silver crown with blood spilling down it, I was intrigued. And when I found out it was part of a YA fantasy series, I was even more intrigued.
What I love about the Red Queen series is how built-out the world is. It isn’t just about a teenage girl who finds out she has never-before-seen power, or about the complicated love triangle (love diamond?) between her and other major characters. It’s about the politics—the conflicts among expansive Silver kingdoms—and the social injustices against the Reds, humans who have been pulverized beneath the boots of all-powerful Silvers.
This especially resonates with the state of the world today. Given the horrible events that have taken place here recently in the United States with the murder of George Floyd and countless other black Americans, I believe any fictional story that calls out discrimination and inequity—whether it be race, gender, sexual orientation, ageism—is worthy and necessary to remedy the generational misthinking that has propagated since the earliest civilizations.
In Red Queen, Victoria Aveyard seamlessly weaves in the history and bloodshed of the Red versus Silver conflict. I rated the series 5 stars as it had everything I could ever want in a YA fantasy series: romance, political intrigue, themes of social injustice, and a tragic villain I couldn't get enough of.
A lot of angry characters.
A lot of war.
Some love.
Some adventure.
But mostly coated with tragedy with an open happy ending.
Which is odd.
I also kept forgetting that these are teens... Because of all the political language and culture of war.
It changes perspective often.
Not smoothly either...
And there are chopping ’cut scenes’.
The transition in the timeline is confusing.
Some characters have great development.
But not the main character in my opinion.
I kept reading because I was curious about how the characters’ relationships develop... (Also there was a few mysterious predictions that caught my curiosity.)
Not so much because the storyline itself. I got bored during the war or when one of the characters would go on and on about their anger or betrayal.
I liked the supernatural abilities some characters have and the setting of the story. The writer paints their word in detail. The concept of fighting for cause vs accepting life as is-- nice overall message. Not everyone is going to agree; hint at the war.
But eh...
The storyline went in circles: main character cause trouble, she then is moody about it for three chapters, somehow becomes the anti-hero, only to cycle again with another troublesome events or tragedy... to then be the anti-hero of her story... Again.
The paragraphs are sometimes very cleverly written, but still a book for a patient reader. Slow.
Sorry if this sounds vague, I'm trying not to give too much spoilers.
Basically it has a historic-fictional vibe. There is clearly romance as well but the main character is to stubborn to accept it for three books worth! The fourth is when she wholeheartedly accepts it. Well. More like the mid of the third book but not openly. Her rivals are my favorite characters. Mostly because they developed to most interestingly.

I prefer hardbacks and usually the bindings are superior to paperbacks and especially mass market paperbacks. Unfortunately these are no better than a mass market paperback, and two of the books bindings are damaged. So, I am very glad they were discounted so much - this is not a seller issue, however!
The story is great and worth the purchase, but only get the hardback editions if on sale!

I'm gutted but after book 1 the characters lose all personality, the writer tries to make up for this by over describing the scenes in the same way I used to try and reach a word count on a school essay.
A blank main character and too many new characters being introduced meant it took forever to try to read and understand.

Its a great story, but a lot to take in and imagine. That said it was an easy enough read.
Again I have only read the first book so far as the story was so involved that I took a break from the series following the first book.
