Things are looking up.
For the first time in what feels like years, October “Toby” Daye has been able to pause long enough to take a breath and look at her life―and she likes what she sees. She has friends. She has allies. She has a squire to train and a King of Cats to love and maybe she can let her guard down for a change.
Or not. When Queen Windermere’s seneschal is elf-shot and thrown into an enchanted sleep by agents from the neighboring Kingdom of Silences, Toby finds herself in a role she never expected to play: that of diplomat. She must travel to Portland, Oregon, to convince King Rhys of Silences not to go to war against the Mists. But nothing is that simple, and what October finds in Silences is worse than she would ever have imagined.
How far will Toby go when lives are on the line, and when allies both old and new are threatened by a force she had never expected to face again? How much is October willing to give up, and how much is she willing to change? In Faerie, what’s past is never really gone.
It’s just waiting for an opportunity to pounce.
“Prepare to be dazzled.… Like the best of urban fantasy, with each reveal and mystery solved, Toby’s world grows ever more enticing. As seductive as Faerie itself, this is one series I could never give up.” ―All Things Urban Fantasy

About the author

Seanan McGuire is a native Californian, which has resulted in her being exceedingly laid-back about venomous wildlife, and terrified of weather. When not writing urban fantasy (as herself) and science fiction thrillers (as Mira Grant), she likes to watch way too many horror movies, wander around in swamps, record albums of original music, and harass her cats.
Seanan is the author of the October Daye, InCryptid, and Indexing series of urban fantasies; the Newsflesh trilogy; the Parasitology duology; and the "Velveteen vs." superhero shorts. Her cats, Lilly, Alice, and Thomas, are plotting world domination even as we speak, but are easily distracted by feathers on sticks, so mankind is probably safe. For now.
Seanan's favorite things include the X-Men, folklore, and the Black Death. No, seriously. She writes all biographies in the third person, because it's easier that way.

In her introduction to The Winter Long McGuire wrote "This book was one of the first I fully plotted, back when this series was a glimmer in my eye and a fantasy for the future. Everything I have done with October’s world to this point has been for the sake of getting here, to the book that you now hold in your hands." She writes almost the exact opposite in the Introduction to A Red-Rose Chain, "A Red-Rose Chain was a surprise from start to finish, and that’s the best kind of book for me, as a writer. I learned things that excited me, and I’m so glad that you’re still here." And yet, to me it felt very similar. We are still in the world that Toby broke when she uncovered Evening Winterrose.
In Chimes at Midnight Toby deposed the Queen of the Mists (QOTM henceforth), replacing her with Arden Windermere, the rightful Queen in the Mists. The former QOTM survived, though, and she would inevitably become a thorn in Arden and Toby's side. A Red-Rose Chain begins with King Rhys of The Silences (that's a Fae kingdom in the Portland, Oregon area) declaring war on Arden on behalf of the QOTM, whom he intends to reinstate. By the rules of Faery, a declaration of war requires three days notice. Arden sends Toby to The Silences as her ambassador to try to negotiate a peaceful solution and prevent the war.
Yes, you read that right. Arden chooses Toby to be her chief diplomat. If you're thinking, "What is Arden smoking?", you have the right idea. It is possible, however, that Arden has in mind exactly what happens -- that Toby breaks more stuff (obviously her superpower). Although not quite as earthshattering as what she accomplished in The Winter Long, what Toby busts in A Red-Rose Chain will have huge implications for her future and the future of the Fae.
I really liked this one because, as in The Winter Long, it feels like we are really learning about the underlying nature of Faery and of Toby's place in it. We know there are vague prophecies about Toby, and The Luidaeg keeps hinting about her plans for Toby. It is finally beginning to become clear how that will all happen.
A Red-Rose Chain is the ninth installment in the long running October Daye Series. The October Daye series is one of my all-time favorite Urban Fantasy series with the likes of Kate Daniels and Mercy Thompson. October is no stranger to danger because she always finds herself in the middle of it whether intentionally or not. In this latest addition, October is sent to the Kingdom of Silence to broker a peace treaty with their king. But instead of peace talk, the false king and queen are determined to incite a war. And as usual it’s up to Toby and her friends to save the day.
I enjoyed A Red-Rose Chain for the most part but I couldn’t help but feel like this was just a filler book. There wasn’t much happening plot-wise. This is the beginning of a new arc in the series but there was no progression to the story or the characters. It was cool seeing a different area of Faerie but that’s about it. The plot felt recycled and uneventful. I also thought the ending was anticlimactic and resolved way too quickly. Once again Toby easily sacrifices herself for the greater good but of course is saved/cured immediately. A little too convenient if I must say. Many reviewers mentioned the overkill in recaps and I definitely agree. I don’t think every single little thing needed an explanation.
This wasn’t the best or strongest book in the series but overall still good. I’m just excited that Toby and Tybalt are going to get married. With that said I hope the wedding is somewhere in the next two books. Or maybe we'd get to see Quentin's home.
Here's what I didn't like: I felt like there was an unresolved issue with Arden, but it will most likely be brought up again in a later book. I wish I had seen what happened with Tia. It seemed they forgot they had tuatha de dannan back up blood.
Here's what I liked: The gang, as usual. Leather pants are back, however momentarily. Quentin's Great Big Sea shirt. Glad that May finally got to act as backup. The Court of Whispering Cats. Rhys was particularly gruesome and vile.
Overall, it read well and flowed nicely., Fast pacing. Looking forward to the next book!
More importantly, there is lots of political intrigue, lots of sneaking around, some fighting, and a dastardly bunch of bad people. It is a great story.
