Doug Dandridge was born in Venice Florida in 1957, the son of a Florida native and a Mother of French Canadian descent. An avid reader from an early age, Doug has read most of the classic novels and shorts of Science Fiction and Fantasy, as well as multiple hundreds of historical works. Doug has military experience including Marine Corps JROTC, Active Duty Army, and the Florida National Guard. He attended Florida State University, studying Biology, Geology, Physics, and Chemistry, and receiving a BS in Psychology. Doug then studied Clinical Psychology at the University of Alabama, with specific interests in Neuropsychology and Child Psychology, completing a Masters and all course work required for a PhD. He has worked in Psychiatric Hospitals, Mental Health Centers, a Prison, a Juvenile Residential Facility, and for the past five years for the Florida Department of Children and Families. Doug has been writing on and off for fifteen years. He concentrates on intelligent science fiction and fantasy in which there is always hope, no matter how hard the situation. No area of the fantastic is outside his scope, as he has completed works in near and far future Science Fiction, Urban and High Fantasy, Horror, and Alternate History.

A Great Second Act

I loved this second installment of the Refuge saga. I cannot stress enough how cool this story has turned out to be, and how deftly the author has managed to juggle a vast cast of characters without a missed step. We go from a bird's eye view of the command staff of the NATO forces to the grunt in the field to the throne room of the evil "half liche" without missing a beat. Such a method can be confusing if not managed correctly, but here we get a true appreciation of the character motivations in this ongoing conflict.

In addition, I appreciate the way the author has laid out the way things work in this new world without relying on the "bad blood" simplicity that bothered me in Tolkien's work. For example, the bad elves are dispicable, the good elves are noble, and the difference has to do with personal choice, not their innate nature. Some of the "lesser" races serve the army of the evil elves not because they buy into their dogma or follow the death gods, but driven at the point of a blade. I am hesitate to make any additional examples for fear of giving spoilers, but rest assured that the second installment in this story is as thrilling as the first. If you like military science fiction and good old fantasy, then check out this series.

What a wonderful movie this series would make. It has everything, weapons ancient and modern, dragons good and bad, plus most of the creatures of European mythology, all woven together so skillfully that nowhere did I lose track of the story. With a cast this huge, such a mix of technology and magic, such great action, this could be made into the greatest fantasy blockbuster of all time. I actually feel mad with Doug Dandridge that he has not yet released Book Three. Sure, there are some typos, as one reviewer mentioned, but they're very minor. I'm serious about Peter Jackson. It's made for him. And it's also made to be filmed in New Zealand. I'm not a fan of the German army (no one who lived through WWII could be)which features very strongly, but there's a "rightness" to Doug's choice of Germans as major players that is intriguing. I found myself remembering a (very nice)German client of an advertising agency I owned long ago, and his character fitted both the story and many of the requirements of this mystical world. After all, when you have mages and immortals as part of the cast, filing systems running properly, people getting to work on time, and a touch of blue-eyed berserker, brings it all together. Bring on the next one Doug.

To be honest, I dislike fantasy stories. I picked this book because I thought it was something else. When I reached the first section with creatures from World of Warcraft and the Hobbit, I almost stopped reading. BUT, something kept me reading, and the further I got into the book the harder it became to put it down. A totally different story to the type I normally read, and so I am CONFUSED! I loved this book, and the following book in the series, but I am still not sure as this type of story still does not appeal to me. And yet, this story caught my attention and held it, even keeping me awake for several nights to read the first two books in the series.
So, Doug Dandridge, please continue the stories in the series, if for nobody else for me. I am a lifelong SF fan, who is almost 60 who has suddenly found a genre that is very new to him, but that kept him involved and looking for more. Great work sir, and please continue.

Refuge:The Arrival Book 2 is the continuation of the saga of a group of Earth refugees who are transported to another world where magic and mythical creatures exist and ruled by soul stealing dark elves. The humans are brought to this world at the start of a nuclear war and are a mixed lot of civilians and allied soldiers who use their technology to protect themselves and establish a place for them to live. The twist is that technology is waning and magical powers are developing among the refugees. Dragons versus helicopters, tanks against wizards, and an ancient prophecy telling of the arrival of a king to free the land. Book 3 just came out and I can't wait.

I have yet to read book one but that did not stop me enjoying book two. Fascinating mix of science and magic that really seems to work. The science bit eg. modern vehicles and weaponry is slowly malfunctioning and dying in a world of magic and our heroes try to adapt. As others have said, it shouldn’t work but it does, and the author seems to make the whole thing believable. Well worth a read but light on humour.

I read this book based on the reviews and I can not agree more I was a bit hesitant thinking people transported to another world where magic is real but I found that the way the author depicted the clashing realities of machinery and magic to be very good and I recommend this series to readers of fantasy who want to find something a bit unusual since this is most definitely a different take on the sword and sorcery genre!
