April is a seventeen-year-old girl who lives in the remains of Las Vegas one year after the outbreak. She has become a ferocious vampire killer and after her family is abducted, she goes searching for them. What she finds is a new breed of vampire, unlike any she has seen before. Unsure of whom she can trust, she discovers that her view of the world is not as black and white as she once thought - and she's willing to bend the rules to rescue her family. But in trying to save them, she may only succeed in bringing her fragile world crashing down around her.

I love vampire books and when you add in other creatures well it is a combo for a good book. This one however was slow to start for me. But after a few chapters it picks up and gets very interesting. This is not the typical Vamp book though as these vampires are a mixture of vamp/zombie like and then you get the hybrids who are something all together different.
April a young strong woman is determined to rescue her mother and little brother from the vampires. The story is set in Las Vegas and a virus has changed most of the people there. April thought all vampires bad until she meets some that are hybrids. April is a fighter and refuses to give up even if it means her death. Oh she also meets Rye who is a mixture and his friends and things start to look up a bit for April.
I am a lover of paranormal and I love when an author throws a mixture in a book. This book gives you that mixture and it also gives you the creep factor because you know this could happen a virus could wipe out mankind and change us all. So if you can't handle that then this may or may not be the book for you.
I was gifted the audible copy of this book for my honest review. And I also own the kindle copy of this book.
Reign of Blood is a post apocalyptic story set in a time where the world has succumb to a viral pandemic. Those who did not die have become hardy survivors or feral vampires. Our main character is April, a girl who has risen to the challenge of the world and become a vampire killer…and now she has to get her family back.
While Reign of Blood is reminiscence of I Am Legend or Immortal Rules, it does bring it’s own flavor to the genre. The story itself is quickly paced and packed full of action and tension, and while it isn’t the most unique story-line it’s definitely one of those simplistic books that are fantastic to just sit back and relax with. The virus aspect is a fun way to open up some different ideas into the genre, which Purdy did as well and I like the direction that this one took especially towards the latter half of the story.
April is pretty self sufficient for most of this book, teaching herself how to take down vampires and moving throughout the world by herself. She’s pretty strong willed and very independent, and her stake first ask questions later mentality does add a bit of tension when she discovers not all vampires are feral. The one issue I had with the characters in this one, was the inclusion of the insta-love relationship. Sure there is a ‘reason’ behind the connection, but I don’t really like when things are chalked up to some sort of mating hormone or ritual. It takes away from the actual development.
Overall I found Reign of Blood to be a great start to a series and I look forward to seeing what happens in book two, Disarming.

I'm not going to write a long review or give any type of description about the book since there's already so many reviews covering everything way better than I could. I'll just say that I do love a good vampire apocalypse and the idea behind this was really good and the opening line ' Never tease anything that wants to eat you' was a great way to start this book. I enjoyed everything apart from April, I have to be honest and say that at times I didn't like her at all, she made stupid decisions, one minute she's hacking away killing everything in sight then she's crying because of what she's done and yes I know she's young and I kept telling myself that and she's been through so much but ultimately she was the only real downfall to this book for me.
Will I continue on with this series, yes I think I will I loved the whole idea and I'm hoping that April will improve with age and experience.
The characters are great I really felt for them being in what they feel is the end of their world.
The story is fast paced with lots of exciting twists that had my adrenaline going. I like the way Alexa Purdy has mixed an apocalypse with vampires, its different and unusual.
Even though there's no cliffhanger I know there are more books in the series and can't wait to read the next story....
I loved Reign of Blood; it is so action packed throughout and April is a fantastic character. The gritty apocalyptic setting was the perfect background to this blend of romance and action. This book has some great secondary characters that I actually would have liked to see a little more of but April and Rye were such great leading characters. Forget the sparkly vampires in Twilight, this book has REAL vampires and I really loved that. I want more of this world and the characters!
