I enjoyed the book. Once Gentry got to be himself (almost, considering the medical issue that made me feel like this was a book about Superman under the influence of kryptonite), and the pace quickened, I found it to be as enjoyable as most of the other series books. If you're a Gray Man fan, you have to buy it. If you're thinking about diving into this landscape, start at the beginning and work your way here. You won't be disappointed.
It was good to see Hightower return, albeit as a somewhat defanged sidekick. Zoya is here as well, but her relationship with Cort is a weak point of the book. Okay -- killer secret agents have trust issues. I think that's plausible. But at some point we should see a real relationship develop -- why put Zoya in the books if you're not going to develop things in much more depth?
I recommend the book. It's great escapism and pretty good action. You won't be disappointed.
There are foreign agents and assassin teams from a half dozen countries all converging in Berlin. There are double and triple crosses, internecine confrontations, impostors by the handful, and, of course, the fate of the known world is at risk. Who can Court trust when he cannot even trust his own government? How can Court function against squads of trained killers while still only 50% healed from his last adventure?
In summation, "Relentless" is too long (over 500 pages), an overly complicated plot, too many "bad guy" characters, and the issues with Court's handler, Suzanne Brewer, need to be dealt with soon before they destroy the fabric of this series. This novel is certainly readable and many longtime fans will enjoy it but this original reader came away somewhat disappointed as well as unimpressed.
Much of the book takes place in Berlin with many streets and facilities, e.g., the Kempinski Hotel, identified. Having visited Berlin many times, I found it interesting to read the street and location names and to view same on Google Maps and Google Earth.
SPOILER HERE: The book is fast paced with a lot of action and activity leading up to the end with some things left for the next book. I am assuming that DDO Matt, who is fired as DDO, and Court who is once again a CIA target, and Suzanne Brewer who remains a big question mark will come together again. I hope so.
How will they survive this one? There is plenty of bad news on the way. Court is yanked out of the hospital while receiving IV antibiotics for osteomyelitis courtesy of being stabbed several weeks before. He thought that was bad!
A must read for any fan of the Gray Man.
