The first agent disappearance was a puzzle.
The second was a mystery.
The third was a conspiracy.
Intelligence operatives around the world are disappearing. When a missing American agent re-appears in Venezuela, Court Gentry, the Gray Man, is dispatched to bring him in, but a team of assassins has other ideas. Court escapes with his life and a vital piece of intelligence.
Meanwhile, CIA agent Zoya Zakharova is in Berlin. Her mission: to infiltrate a private intelligence firm with some alarming connections. The closer she gets to answers, the less likely she is to get out alive.
Court and Zoya are just two pieces on this international chessboard, and they're about to discover one undeniable truth—sometimes capturing a king requires sacrificing some pawns.

There are foreign agents and assassin teams from a half dozen countries all converging in Berlin. There are double and triple crosses, internecine confrontations, impostors by the handful, and, of course, the fate of the known world is at risk. Who can Court trust when he cannot even trust his own government? How can Court function against squads of trained killers while still only 50% healed from his last adventure?
In summation, "Relentless" is too long (over 500 pages), an overly complicated plot, too many "bad guy" characters, and the issues with Court's handler, Suzanne Brewer, need to be dealt with soon before they destroy the fabric of this series. This novel is certainly readable and many longtime fans will enjoy it but this original reader came away somewhat disappointed as well as unimpressed.
I enjoyed the book. Once Gentry got to be himself (almost, considering the medical issue that made me feel like this was a book about Superman under the influence of kryptonite), and the pace quickened, I found it to be as enjoyable as most of the other series books. If you're a Gray Man fan, you have to buy it. If you're thinking about diving into this landscape, start at the beginning and work your way here. You won't be disappointed.
It was good to see Hightower return, albeit as a somewhat defanged sidekick. Zoya is here as well, but her relationship with Cort is a weak point of the book. Okay -- killer secret agents have trust issues. I think that's plausible. But at some point we should see a real relationship develop -- why put Zoya in the books if you're not going to develop things in much more depth?
I recommend the book. It's great escapism and pretty good action. You won't be disappointed.
How will they survive this one? There is plenty of bad news on the way. Court is yanked out of the hospital while receiving IV antibiotics for osteomyelitis courtesy of being stabbed several weeks before. He thought that was bad!
A must read for any fan of the Gray Man.
