About the author

Lucy Knisley is an illustrator, comic artist and author. I'll bet you're wondering how to pronounce her name (the K is silent).
Lucy is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she went to study painting, and ended up making comics. She then studied at the Center for Cartoon Studies, where she received a scholarship to pursue her MFA (completed in June, 2009).
Beginning with a love for Archie comics, Tintin and Calvin and Hobbes, she has been making comics in some form or another since she could hold a pencil.
She lives in Chicago, where she makes comics, does freelance illustration, and teaches the occasional comics workshop. Check out her blog and web comic essay series on Lucyknisley.com!
Her Books:
French Milk, from Touchstone Publishing, is a drawn journal about living (and eating) in Paris with her mother. (From Touchstone Publishing from Simon and Schuster), August of 2008.
Relish, from First Second Books, is about growing up in the food industry. (First Second Books, April 2013.) It won an Alex Award from the American Librarian Association, was a NYT and Amazon bestseller, and a Goodreads top graphic novel of 2013.
An Age of License and Displacement are paired travelogues about youth and family, coming out this year (Fantagraphics Books, 2014).
She continues to work away on two more graphic novels, and is excited to bring more comics to share with readers.

I picked this book up when looking through a list of books with recipes when I needed to fulfill a prompt. This one was recommended by a couple people and the graphic novel format had me intrigued. I really enjoyed the way this book combined food knowledge, personal life stories, and a good dose of humor throughout as well. There are quite a few recipes that sound great also!
I would recommend this one to my food loving friends looking for a fun take on a nonfiction read!
Okay, now to my actual review! If you've read any other books by Knisley then you'll love this. Relish is a really lovely, slow paced memoir about Knisley's life through food. Each chapter is sort of based around a specific event, and the food is what seems to bring the event all together at the end. There are only a few recipes in the book but they're all accompanied by lovely infographic illustrations and directions. I especially love the cheese guide. This book will make you want to eat at every restaurant she mentions and I dream of her grandma's pickles! I must say I'm actually pretty jealous of her life, she traveled a lot as a kid, and even went to Europe with only a friend as a teen. What I would have given for my mother to let me do that! The way she describes each food item will make your mouth water, never have I craved a good croissant so much! Haha.
Anyway, this is not an action packed spiderman type book, this is not a batman comic, it's a thought out, elegant graphic novel about a girls life through food, suitable for reading with your preteens, as a gift for teenagers, or any adult you know that likes food and art.
The illustrations were colorful, fairly easy to follow, and complemented the text. The story was a little dry in parts and I had a hard time getting into the story. The recipes inside were enjoyable to look at, but I hadn't had a chance to try any yet. Overall, I think people interested in food will enjoy this book, but as a stand-alone biography, probably not.
