5.0 out of 5 stars Horror with a touch of grief.
By Joshua Marsella on August 3, 2020
A mother checks herself out of a mental hospital to be reunited with her son. Unfortunately for her, her son was murdered prior to her self-induced hospitalization. What was once a tragic incident turns even more tragic when the mother becomes obsessed with seeing her dead son again at all costs.

I believe horror is at its best when it combines real life tragedy with supernatural elements that are left fairly ambiguous. Cull manages to tug at the reader’s heartstrings while leaving them with a heavy sense of dread. The combination of horror and grief we share with Lucy is so well written that we can’t help but completely understand the motivations behind her irrational behavior. As a parent, I can totally sympathize with her desperate attempts to see her son just one more time.

The horror is never overshadowed by the heavy emotional impact the story carries with it and I found this book very enjoyable. The imagery at times sent a chill down my spine and the sadness that is felt throughout the story made me want to go give my own sons a big hug. I highly recommend Remains!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very dark story...but oh, so good...
By Wofford Lee Jones on September 10, 2020
Grief is a black house as it states on the back cover of this book. REMAINS by @andrewcull is a bleak story but the writing is beautiful...mesmerizing; it conjures so many images, many of them grim, but images that make you feel. Cull always has a way of putting your nerves on edge. During the reading of Remains, I found myself at times biting my nails with nervousness. I felt like I was traveling the rooms and hallways of 1428 Montgomery as Lucy Campbell, and some of the other characters. Talk about mounting tension...I felt like a washrag and this book was two hands where the more I read, the tighter those hands became, slowly wringing me out. Always look forward to an Andrew Cull read. In my book, he’s a master of the macabre.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need to read this if you love horror!
Reviewed in Canada on November 30, 2019
. Wow. As a lover of haunted houses and ghost stories, this book succeeded in making me feel completely unsettled and utterly terrified! After reading Bones and completely loving it, I just had to read more of Andrew’s work ASAP. And Remains delivered on my expectations 110%.
.
As a horror reader, when a story makes me frightened of my own shadow, I’m impressed. I felt a sense of dread through the entire book wondering what was lurking around the next corner, ready to jump out and scare me. My pulse was racing, and I was sitting, hunched over this book, like nothing else in the world around was there. It had reeled me in, fully and completely, then slammed the door and locked me inside 1428 Montgomery house with it.
.
Now as a mother, this book took me to a whole other level of fear. I felt as if my soul was being dragged out of my body, kicking and screaming and then whatever still remained, was scrapped out with a rusty metal spoon to leave me barren and hollow. Nothing left but an empty bag of bones. No mother should ever have to mourn the loss of a child and the complete emotional collapse of this story left me broken and my heart shattered into a million pieces.
.
Needless to say, this book deserves all the stars and I will be first in line the next time I can get my hands on Andrews work. Until then I will be stalking him... in a good way, not a creepy ‘Im your number one fan’ way 😂😂😂. Thanks again Andrew for creating such an amazing piece of work!
